How wonderful this movie is out in New Zealand already! This was good on two levels, my 3 year old daughter was entranced by it, and it had a clear story line to follow. It reminded me a bit of Rapunzel and Swan Lake maybe it was the flying horse? But a strong heroine again it also returned to the use of classical music which I enjoyed listening to in the background.

All Princess Annika wants to do is skate, but her parents don't approve. Even so she sneaks out and does it only Wenlock, an evil wizard hears about her beauty and comes to find her to take her for his bride. She resists and to force her to marry him Wenlock enchants her family setting them in ice as statues along with all the villagers. Annika is saved by a winged horse (her sister Brietta under enchantment). She has three days to try to find the key to breaking the spell or the people and her parents will stay as statues forever. Along the way she finds love (in the form of the penitent Aidan who has lost all his family's money) and she finds friends and allies as well as breaking her sister's enchantment. It has some simple and nice messages in it as well sisterly love, taking only what you need, empathy etc.

It is nice to see a return to simpler storylines Fairytopia (the last Barbie movie) had a complicated storyline and seemed to be all about marketing as many dolls as possible. With two main characters and a winged horse (who is 'Barbie's' sister but has been under enchantment), the story was easier for the kids to follow along. the costumes were more reminiscent of classical fairytales as well. I guess I will be getting a bit of grief from my kids about buying them the toys to go with this. I don't know if I will or not but at least other barbie dolls can be used in the fray Anneliese and Erika could be dressed up even rapunzel, or using Marzipan from Nutcracker if you have any of them

The animation on tis was very good I loved the way the hair moved during the ice skating scenes for instance so it seems to be getting better with each movie. There were good bright colours. the 3D is great too and the glasses that come with this are Barbie branded, however, just watch out, the littlies don't like keeping them on their noses and are more interested in experimenting with everything else in the house 4 pairs don't last long. you can order more but it is an expensive kind of novelty I think I appreicated it more than they did!

This is a good movie, but all I would ask is that Barbie goes back to all singing all dancing like in Princess and the Pauper, that was a great movie!

This is definitely the worst of the Barbie series. I was leery at first about any of them, but the first three (Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Rapunzel) were good. A bit sugary but nothing offensive in them. This one however ... The heroine sneaks out and deliberately disobeys her parents on several occasions, yells at them disrepectfully and is generally smartmouthed. The hero (Aidan) is just as bad. Even the animated looks they give sometimes, turns my stomach as a mom. I wouldn't recommend this movie to little girls ... especially if they like to repeat what they hear! Screen it first.

SUPER SUPER movie. My nieces love it! YES! YOU DO HAVE THE OPTION OF TURNING OFF 3-D effects!

Honest reviews on Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus - With 3-D (2005)

As far as the acting is concerned, this is a terrific Barbie movie, one of the better ones by far, but the 3-D effects leave much to be desired. I was very disappointed when we donned our glasses, only to have a very blurry visual with terrible discoloration. Moreover, the glasses were far from comfortable, but then again, they were probably made for much smaller faces!

Nevertheless, I loved the storyline -a beautiful princess who is not only courageous, but never gives up hope in her quest to save her parents and her kingdom from certain destruction. To succeed she must secure three rare objects (not tangible) within 36 hours. Hope" is the central theme in this movie -that one should never give up on it, and should always expect succeed with even the "teeniest" amount of it no matter what circumstances come their way. It's a very positive message for young (and perhaps not so young) audiences.

I have read many of the posted reviews about this movie and it seems as though people stop watching when she disobeys her parents. I definately agree that is not the correct way for a child to act, but after she does this, there are consequences. She has to go through a lot of things to fix the problem that she has created by not listening to her parents. I think it is a very good movie, (as they all have been so far) and I think it teaches a very valueable lesson.

My 4 year old has loved the Barbie Movies since she was 2 and this one, the third installment in the Fairytopia series did not dissapoint. I personally prefer the ones based on fairytales (Princess and the Pauper, Nutcracker, and Twevle Dancing Princesses) but I thought that this was the best movie of the Fairytopia series. The anamation is awesome. We saw this movie on Nickelodeon and recorded on our DVR. We have watched it at least once everyday since, great movie!

Although I am not a big Barbie fan, my 4 and 6 year old girls love this movie. It is a pretty decent movie-good messages about being nice and doing the right thing. Believe it or not Barbie is actually a strong role model. She solves problems on her own and doesn't wait for her Prince to save her.

Honest reviews on Barbie Fairytopia - Magic of the Rainbow (2010)

I was surprised with this movie. The animation is still beautiful like all of the Barbie movies and Elena is a good role model, but I was disappointed with the plot and character development. In the past two movies Barbie must make sacrifices to save the land she loves, in this one all she has to do is be on somewhat good/bad terms with the other fairies in the school. I just didn't feel as if there was any growth in her character. Yes, she has many gifts she is a very talented fairy but what does she do with them? She's also the only one who appears to know what is going on and how to the defeat the bad guy. I prefer the other 2 fairytopia movies.

Compared with some of the other Barbie videos I was slightly disappointed with this, but the target audience certainly were not. In the week we rented this film I have lost count of the number of times my children have watched it.

For reference, this is the third in the "Fairytopia" sequence which currently consists of:

Fairytopia

Mermaidia

Magic of the Rainbow.

Before we first rented one of the Barbie videos for my daughter, I was expecting them to be trite, over-commercialised, and over-sugary. In general, however, I have been pleasantly surprised.

Yes, they do have a lot of commercial spin-offs and a high saccharine count, but the quality of the Barbie films we have subsequently bought or rented, including all three "Fairytopia" films, was significantly higher than I had originally expected. They have not just kept my children engrossed for hours including my son as well as my daughter but introduced them to some beautiful stories. Several but sadly not this one also introduced my children to some truly wonderful music.

On more than one occasion I have been listening to a CD of a classic such as Beethoven's pastoral symphony, or "The Queen of the Night's aria" from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute", and my five year old daughter has recognised and expressed appreciation of the music, and correctly remembered which Barbie film had used it. ("Magic of Pegasus" and "Mermaidia" respectively.)

So I was very disappointed that "Fairytopia the magic of the rainbow" did not continue this tradition: no great classics this time, the musical score is just competently written filler.

The film continues the story of a Barbie as a good fairy, Elina and her "puffball" companion Bibble, who seek to protect the land of the fairies (Fairytopia) from being taken over and ruined by the evil Laverna.

This time Bibble, the "puffball" comic relief character gets a romance of his own.

Those people who enjoy criticising the way Mattel operate the Barbie franchise will not have much difficulty finding things in this production to sneer at. If you, or more importantly your kids, are allergic to an excess of twee sweetness, then this film and the Barbie videos generally may not be for them.

The female characters are all on the thin side of plausibility: I'm not worried that watching this is going to give my own daughter anorexia as she likes food too much and has a good sense of the difference between fantasy and reality. And after all, the characters in this story are fairies, complete with wings! However, if you are worried that your children may be forming an unrealistic idea about how thin a healthy female body shape is, it is not quite impossible that this film may contribute to it.

But on the plus side: it is beautifully made, it will hold the attention of most small children for long enough for the typical exhausted parent to clear the mess they have made in several rooms of the house or collapse for an hour's rest after doing so. And there are still a few more sophisticated jokes thrown in, so you won't be completely bored to death if you decide to watch it with your offspring.

Overall this is not, in my opinion, quite as good as some of the previous Barbie videos, including the first two Fairytopia" titles, but anything which can hold my children's attention as well as this film did clearly has something going for it.

Having rented the title to try it out, I will be buying it for my children, probably as part of the triple DVD set with all three "Fairytopia" titles.

When my wife called me to ask if I minded her getting this video for my three-year-old daughter, I of course told her that it was fine. I knew I would be stuck watching it over and over because my little girl loves to watch things with her daddy. We sat down before bedtime and popped it in the VCR, and I committed myself to being a good daddy and to spending some quality time with my little one. The movie opened with a rip-roaring musical number, and the quality of the computer animation was very impressive. Being a Mark Twain scholar (I did my thesis on Twain), I was expecting a goofy, silly movie adaptation of the story. After all, Barbie is about as interesting to me as fly vomit. However, what I found was a wonder. The story was excellent, but the songs were the best part of the film. The quality of the musical numbers rivals that of any Disney production. The VHS tape came with a CD with all of the major songs on it. My little girl sits and sings them to me and even asks her dad to join in on the "boy parts" of the song. What struck me about the movie most was the excellent character development in this short film. It was, I have to reluctantly admit, wonderful. Princess Annaliese, Erika, King Dominick, Julian, and the two cats are wonderfully portrayed. However, the stand out character is most definitely Preminger. This is a top-notch villain because he dosen't fit the established mold. He is prissy, vain, and feminine. However, he is also sly, conniving, and cruel hearted. His musical number "How can I refuse?" is among the best "villain songs," I have ever heard...bar none. There is also a great subplot involving the cats. Even the minor characters stand out. I've watched the film over and over with my little girl, and I have to admit that I enjoyed it every time. And I don't feel a bit unmanly at all.

I just saw this one and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I knew my daughter would love it, but I didn't expect to like it as well. The story was sweet and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My daughter was particularly delighted with the singing. She loves to sing, and musicals lend themselves for repeated encores by my daughter who learns songs faster than I ever could. If you have never watched a Barbie movie, I would recommend you give them a try, especially if you have a little girl in your home. They are much better than what most people who have not watched them think they are. The messages in the movies are positive, and the movies themselves are captivating and well made. As a parent I can say that I do not get as tired of the Barbie movies as I do of most other cartoon movies when forced to watch them repeatedly by my child. That is a big plus in my book. Barbie Princess and the Pauper is a nice follow up film to the other Barbie movies. We look forward to the next installment in the series.

I am 27 yrs old and i dont have any kids, i am still a kid at heart and I loved Barbie Growing up, in 2001 when the Nutcracker came out i thought wow that looks so cute and the animation looks adorable, and since i grew up w/ Barbie I had to have it. I was hooked after watching it and have been collecting all of the movies. Its so nice to sit in bed and watch a really cute animated barbie movie and it makes u feel like a kid again. I feel so happy at the end of the movies just like i did as a kid. The Princess and the Pauper has a GREAT story to it the characters are adorable, I just loved it. Young or Old everyone can enjoy these movies.

Honest reviews on Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper (2010)

Having two daughters ages 5-1/2 and 7, we have all the previous Barbie movies and love them all they are quality products, beautifully crafted and artistically gorgeous and the music is always delightful (I mean, how can you go wrong with Swan Lake and the Nutcracker, but the original music from Rapunzel is hauntingly beautiful and extremely moving as well). So there was no question we would purchase Barbie As The Princess and the Pauper.

WOW! Barbie has outdone herself with this new DVD. As her first "Animated Musical," I must admit I was slightly skeptical, especially following the outstanding music that came before in the other Barbie DVDs. Imagine my surprise when I found myself completely blown away by the music and lyrics in every song of this DVD. Simply a first-rate job: Clever, singable (addictively so) and emotionally moving songs, one after another. And kudos to the songwriters for bringing back the beauty of the simple duet: The songs sung by Princess Anneliese and Erika together are just gorgeous and lovely.

Oh, and don't worry after getting over the beauty and richness of the music and songs, you will not be disappointed in any way by the story and animation, which is once again captivating, interesting, and intelligent. I am most impressed with all of the Barbie DVDs in that they always give Barbie's character a mature, strong, assertive, intelligent persona so opposite of what so many people used to believe (and probably still do) the Barbie dolls conveyed to impressionable young girls. The dolls may be all about fashion and perfect figures and shopping and boyfriends, but in the DVDs, Barbie is kick-ass smart, strong, decisive and compassionate (and, of course, still beautiful and perfectly-figured).

As the plot is well-written, fast-moving, and action-packed, even Daddies and older brothers will find themselves drawn to the story and animation in spite of themselves! (And get a load of Martin Short as the voice of the bad guy, the "evil Preminger" this may be one of his best roles to date!)

All in all, we are just pleased as punch with this DVD, and have watched it again and again. We also have the CD of the songs in the car, and I have actually listened to it a few times when my daughters were not even in the car! The songs just make you feel good inside. As long as Barbie continues starring in DVDs of this quality and caliber, we will certainly be purchasing them as soon as they hit the store shelves. And make sure not to miss the "outtakes" at the end of the film funniest animated outtakes I've seen since Toy Story and Monsters Inc.!

Unequivocally 5 stars.

I was really dreading this but thanks to the ads, my 3 year-old was smitten.

I was expecting something dire but the music was pretty good. I love the bad guy Preminger. He dances great and he's so over the top. The women are good role models. They both escape vs. being "rescued" by the men, who are, by the way, real people. Dominik likes music and Julian is well-read. The princess likes science and ends up running the royal mines and Erika insists on having her singing career before marrying the king. I know, it's streching things but they're trying!

I wouldn't want fairy tales to get too politically correct though they've firmed up the hansome prince and "damsel in distress" image a bit.

The only reason I gave it only 4 stars is that I found the computer models a bit creepy. Since I didn't grow up with them, I'm a little weirded out but that wont bother a little girl at all.

My 3 year old is glued to the TV (great punishment, "Want to watch princess Barbie today? Then stop doing X") and after my brain has been fried over so many of these kids' shows, this is welcome relief, again and again and again...

Barbie Presents Thumbelina (2009) Review

Barbie Presents Thumbelina
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I was so excitied to get the Thumbalina movie for my 4 going on 5 year old. We both have grown to Love Barbie's Princess & the Pauper, Diamond Castle, etc. I was so excitied for a New Barbie Movie as Diamond Castle was great! So I was expecting the same from Thumbalina movie...as I loved the Thumbalina story when I was young. Well, I was wrong!

First, this movie has nothing to do with the original Thumbalina...except for the name and it's a fairy. Second, this movie did not display the type of behavior I want my young lady watching. The girl in the movie is portrayed as a "spoiled Rich Brat" , who's parents give her anything she wants. They zone in on the fact that the girl and her two friends are very into high fashion...and have competition on who has the newest Name Brand Fashion item ( and I am not talking on the lines of Guess....rather Gucci). I find it very annoying that Barbie would want to expose young girls to this. Now, in their defense, Thumbalina helps turn the bratty girl into caring about the forest...but seriously they spent so much time showing the bratty rich snobby girls judging each other so much...I felt the damage was already done. I could see this movie may be better for 13 age as they are aware of cliches, and catty girls. Now the enviromental message in this movie is not a strong one. You could teach your child more, by planting a tree or garden. The sad part is that this dvd is literally going in the trash. I don't even want to recycle it.

This movie is drastically different from the other Barbie movies. They are trying to do their good deed by making a movie with an environmental message. This appears to be a calculated move from a marketing standpoint, rather than genuine concern for the environment since the only effort Mattel has made is with the items associated with this movie (recylced packaging for the toys, etc.). Nothing makes blatant commercialism stand out like a sore thumb like trying to package it as anti-commercialism. We all know that the Barbie movies are commercials for their toys (like the TV cartoons we grew up with), but as parents we've tolerated it with the Barbie movies because they've so far done alright at putting good moral lessons into them and making them relatively entertaining. This movie is not on the same level as the previous movies in a few ways. The writing, particularly in the dialog department, is very weak and stilted. They have built everything around their obviously half-hearted attempt at "doing a good deed for the environment" and it shows in that every element involved in the "green theme" is poorly executed. The dialog in these parts is atrocious, cringe-worthy jargon. It sounds more like a cheap PSA than movie dialog. The premise is horribly flawed that they would be trying to build a factory so far out of the way that they have to attack a field of flowers that nobody ever goes to. That they transplant a section of the flowers from the field to Makena's room using an excavator (and apparently so quickly and cleanly that the twillerbees inside have no idea where they are or what has happened) is positively laughable. I've had more to explain to my daughters of how things wouldn't happen the way they depicted in this movie than any other Barbie movie, and we have all but the Diaries and Fairytopia ones.

The animation is not up to par on this movie either, and I suspect it is because they are trying to churn out more movies this year than any previous year. They seem to have caught on that the movies are very effective at selling toys, so they're trying to hit us with a non-stop barrage. What happens then is that they are trying to slap these things together in maybe a quarter of the amount of time they used to have. Thus now the lifelike characters move like hollow rubber tubes, and the main characters aren't even attempted to look lifelike. Oddly enough, they look like the Sweet Streets dolls from Fisher Price... I also noticed several times during the movie that the image will pixellate and become grainy, so the finish is seriously lacking. Also noteworthy is the small role Kelly Sheridan has been playing lately. She got to mostly sit out of Mariposa, Christmas Carol, and Thumbelina and only had a starring role in the Diamond Castle movie.

I guess I've been lucky about the brattiness of the girls in this movie, as my daughters have not tried to emulate them. In fact the only comment I've received so far is my oldest asking "Why doesn't she say anything other than 'Ch-ya'?" which has given me the opportunity to point out that she doesn't have anything valuable to add so she just says something stupid. I also point out at the end that her part was so insignificant that nobody is credited for her. Frankly I thought the part was hillarious as a representation of the stupid things snobby people will say when they can't just be silent, but that is beside the point since I'm old enough to not be influenced by cartoons.

All of this aside, I will say that the weird looking characters can grow on you. Usually I like the villain characters in the Barbie movies because they tend to ham things up and totally upstage the heroic characters (particularly Martin Short's Premingerclassic!), but in this one, I think Thumbelina's ditzy friend, Chrysella steals a lot of scenes. Also the construction workers (not counting the crazy foreman) provided a few good laughs, although they would have a hard time keeping a job with the way they spend most of their time eating lunch and smelling the flowers. A good crew would have had the job of blading the ground done before lunch on the first day. Poor little pixies would never have known what hit them... All in all, the depiction of construction workers was pretty bad showing them to be lazy and more than a little weak in the head, and the foreman was the primary villain. In that respect, the environmental message skews the story into the very turbulent waters of over-generalization. It reminded me of a book that was just banned from the schools for trying to generalize Loggers as evil polluting critter killers. They tried to soften it by making it only the foreman who is really trying to tear the place up, but by doing that they made doofuses out of the workers. Way to go guys. Some kids watching this may have parents who work in construction, or other relatives, and now they are going to have to explain to these kids that they don't go around trying to destroy pixie homes... Does it also need to be pointed out that there is plenty of good that can be said in favor of green practices and environmental causes without having to involve magic and make-believe situations (which only dillute the message)? Since there aren't any pixies in the homeless shelters, trying to save their habitat is kind of pointless, you think?

This movie is mildly amusing and my daughters enjoy it immensely, but I think it has the worst dumbed-down plot of all of them. The parts about understanding what true friendship is are good, and that goes back to what most of the Barbie movies are good at, self-esteem stories. They need to stick to those motifs if they're going to do rush jobs on these movies.

And if you think this one was bad, the next one features four Barbies riding horses in mini-skirts waving swords around. That ought to get all of us parents up in arms!

My four-year-old and her friends LOVE this movie (my 2 1/2 year old, too), and while I have to agree that the snobbish attitudes of the rich girls aren't my favorite, overall, I liked the show and thought it was a nice change from the many Barbie movies that have an evil "villain" character in them. True, it's not really the story of Thumbelina, but it's a cute, refreshing story, not scary at all for little ones, and I quite enjoyed it myself, for what it is. I recommend it.

AwfulI am glad I rented it before buying it. Not a good story about thumbelina, the daughter character is spoiled rotten, the friends are obnoxious brats, the parents are ridiculous"we'll give you whatever you want, dear" This is not a good role model movie at all, no lessons learned other than how to act spoiled and rotten! First of all, this is from a 13yearold who loves Barbie. I have seen the movies; I love 'em all. I like Thumbelina a lot, but I do have a few peeves with it.

Pros:

1. It's very different. A change from all the princess movies. Don't get me wrong! I LOVE the princess movies, but a change is always nice.

2. It inspired me to help the enviroment more.

3. The Twillerbees are very coolI love their home!

4. It's a good story, but there isn't any scary stuff. It's hard to have a good movie without a little bit of fright, or on-the-edge-of-your-seat stuff.

Cons:

1. The animation is NOWHERE NEAR as beautiful as the older ones! It remids me of movies like Toy Story. I DID NOT like the construction Boss Myron. He looks completely unrealistic and despicable.

2. I didn't like the way the parents were portrayed as "kiss-ups." It's a way of undermining parents authority. Although you must understand, it's not that they are dumb slobs, but they are too busy and don't have time for their daughter. So they simply let her have whatever she wants. It's the classic "rich kid" casea daughter longing for attention and getting it from her firends because it's unavailable from her parents.

3. Barbie tells the story to a redhead, browneyed Emma, along with a group of kids. I missed the one-on-one, heart-to-heart sister relationship between Barbie and her sisters.

4. "Ashlyn", Violet's friend, is SOOOO irritating!!! All she says is "Ch-ya!" grr....

5. I didn't like the way Thumbelina and her friends appeared to the kids at the end. I like the more mystery, where Barbie might say something like, "Maybe..." but you never see the fairy-tale peopleso the kids are just left thinking.

Overall, I really like this movie. I have 4 pros and 5 cons, so I give it a 4 out of 5. I disagree with those who say that the rich girls are terrible. Violet is a brat the whole time, but McKenna makes a small sacrifice to help Thumbelina and learns that true friends aren't people to just impress and try to be better than. SHE LEARNS HER LESSON.

I think it's a good movie for kids, but I really miss the old animation. I miss Barbie's old face (have you noticed the change???) and I miss the old style. Other than that, it's good. Enjoy!

I once heard a definition of integrity as something you are when nobody's watching. I also once heard someone comment that there must be no honor among filmmakers because apparently nobody in a high-budget production cared that the movie made was terrible. Well, I have to say, this movie is yet another shining example of the Barbie movies' integrity.

They could get away with SO much--they don't NEED to put a plot or characters or even any kind of acting into this, honestly. BUT THEY DO. The reason I pick this movie out of the crop is that (a) it was just released, and (b) it's a great example of the integrity that is so lost among high-end studio productions these days. Why? Think--what movie is similar to this? Can you think of any parallels? Especially in the Disney array? It's a movie with striking similarities to the Little Mermaid.

BUT, instead of making the heroine a selfish brat and saving it with appealing sidekicks and great music, the characters themselves are likable (or hate-able) and they DON'T have to make the person trying to marry the prince a creepy person either. It's so great! The music, as in the Princess and the Pauper, is shockingly good; the animation and visuals just keep getting better and better; and the storytelling and character development are far above the par of the so-called "best" of Hollywood today.

If you have already started collecting the Barbie movies, get this one too. If not, start right now! Little girls and you(!) will ACTUALLY enjoy them together. This is a worthwhile movie to see, as are the other Barbie movies. Even the weakest of them (story-wise) is morally strong and is better quality than most Hollywood fare these days.

Enjoy this film integrity!

I told people that if I ever had a daughter, I would NEVER buy her anything Barbie. But here I am, with 3 girls later, and I have bought them almost every Barbie movie on the market! This is by far the best Barbie movie, IMHO. My girls (ages 2 & 4) love the songs and the animals. The movie is also very brightly colored. Ever since I bought the movie for them, they've been watching it constantly. I try not to analyze the Barbie movies too much though. Otherwise I would be focusing in on Azul, the "happy" peacock, if you know what I mean... Barbie movie-makers always seem to throw in some unique characters. Embarrasingly enough, I cried at the end of the movie! I'm looking forward to the Mariposa movie next!

Best Deals for Barbie as The Island Princess (2007)

I love all the Barbie movies, but this has to be my favorite! It has a lot of similar aspects to some of my favorite Disney (and non-Disney) animated movies, which I loved. The story flows well and the characters are endearing. The animation is, in my opinion, the best in the series; the colors are more vibrant, which makes it less jarringly CG, and I love the character designs (such as Ro's braid and Prince Antonio's face, which was different than all the other "Kens").

What really makes this movie a winner, though, is the soundtrack. Just TRY and tell me that those songs don't get stuck in your head. I've been listening to them OVER and OVER. The best song in the movie by far is "I Need to Know." The duet between Alessandro Juliani (Antonio) and Melissa Lyons (Ro) is absolutely GORGEOUS. Their harmony is amazing, I got goosebumps! The other songs are good too, I can't get "The Rat Song" out of my head.

These movies are good for people who like visually pleasing stories that don't make you think too hard. Call it predictable, but it's nice when you can count on everyone living happily ever after. While deep, dark, thought-provoking movies serve their purpose, when you're stressed out or just want to relax, sometimes you just need a good cartoon. That's what Disney movies USED to be about, and the Barbie movies have taken over in their stead. This movie has excellent values in it, such as respect for animals, the value of caring for others, and the importance of sharing (the lyrics to the song "Always More" are really good for this), and following your heart. I would definitely show this movie to little girls, as it's movies like this that provide wholesome entertainment with good values to children, while being entertaining to adults as well.

I encourage you to try this movie out before you make up your mind that it's "silly" or "kids stuff."

Honest reviews on Barbie as The Island Princess (2007)

Okay, I will admit up front that my five-year-old daughter and I have only watched this DVD once, and sometimes movies grow on you the more you watch them. But our initial reaction is one of disappointment. I thought the songs were very forgettable and the main characters weren't very interesting (Prince Antonio, in particular, is pretty bland and the villaness is not as colorful as in past Barbie movies.) My daughter had been so excited about finally getting to see Island Princess, especially since it is a musical, but she wandered away several times while it was on (something she doesn't do while watching Princess and the Pauper or Swan Lake, her two favorite Barbie movies.) I have a feeling Island Princess is not going to join the list of her most-requested DVDs.

It is a very cute movie and my 4 year old daughter watches it over and over again. I has very cute songs that she already learned. I recommend it!

We pre-ordered the Mariposa DVD because we like the Fairytopia series so much.

First off, its a story-within-a-story. The first ~10 minutes and last ~5 minutes are Elina telling the story to bibble. My girls love Elina and Bibble so they are of course happy to see them again.

The movie itself follows the Fairytopia formula very closely. Instead of Laverna, you have Henna. Instead of bibble, the bunny. Instead of fungi, you have Skeezites. Its a race against time. Its a formula that worked very well before, and could work again.

But whats missing? Gone are the bright uplifting moments, like the appearance of the crest of courage, the changing from fairy to mermaid and back, Bibble talking funny after eating magic berries, and other things that made the other movies more fun. My kids react nicely to the best movies, but not this one. There is a lot of drama, but not very much happiness to balance it out.

A bit more about the drama: Most of the Fairytopia movies are driven forward by mock drama and very plain and pale threats (a weed grabbed me, yikes! A firebird is chasing me! I have to hide from some bumbling Fungi, who might do very little to me!). This works well for 3 to 5 year olds, who don't need a serious reason for the drama that older children do. Mariposa is dramatically different: most of the action and drama in this movie is the constant fear of death. I wish they could have been a bit more inventive.

The plot follows a similar vein: in other Fairytopia movies, the driver of the plot was that everyone was getting sick because of laverna, that Elina then had to save mermaidia from getting sick, that if they didn't stop laverna there would be 10 years of winter. Death was in those movies, but it wasn't laid out as the absolute reason for everything. In Mariposa, the deal is that if the queen dies the light goes out and then everyone is in fear of death because the skeezites EAT EVERYONE. So the fairies have to put themselves in fear of their own life, and have concerns they will die.

There is nothing wrong with death in children's films. Its a part of life. What I am saying is it the main concept of this film to the point that I felt that it was used as a crutch. They could have devoted more time to something more entertaining for children, like when the fairies try to make the first blush of spring bloom in the third Fairytopia. Something more enjoyable for them to watch.

Oh, and my 4 year old daughter said it was Nori talking, not Mariposa. Guess they used the same voice actress but its disappointing that it was so obvious. But, she had watched mermaidia a few days before.

Should you let your child see this movie? Sure. Its not awful. They put some effort into the production and the values are admirable. There is nothing bad in it.

But, unlike previous fairytopia movies, this one falls a bit flat. Keep your expectations low. My children didnt finish the movie saying 'oh wow!', and 2 days later they are moving on to other things. Its clear they like the other fairytopia movies better.

I eagerly bought this movie for my four year old. We were expecting to enjoy it as we LOVED The Island Princess. We were also disappointed. The skeezites are scary and my daughter also asked me to skip those parts. The eating of the fairies wasn't necessary, and could have been done differently. This movie will definitely be shelved for a while. That being said, the imagery and colors of the movie are beautiful, which would be the only reason we would dare to watch it again.

Best Deals for Barbie Mariposa (2008)

My daughter waited for the latetest Barbie title, Mariposa only to be disapointed when it was released. The Butterfly Fairies are constantly being chased by creatures (Skeezites and a sea beast) which are trying to EAT them through the whole movie. There is also a Butterfly Fairy that betrays the queen and helps the Skeezites to try to eat all her friends. This is in a movie that is meant for little girls, I can't see how this was approved for release. This movie doesn't have the attributes of the other movies, it's too scary. My daughter keeps asking for us to "skip this part" because it's too scary. This movie only teaches our children they are too small and someone is always tryng to get them.

Honest reviews on Barbie Mariposa (2008)

My daughters love Barbie movies, because they're usually less scary than Disney Princess movies. My husband and I like Barbie movies because they usually depict very brave, very strong female characters (not just someone waiting around to get rescued!) We usually end up buying these movies on the first day they came out and watching them over and over until the next "new" one -this one, however, is a little too scary, and the story is basically recycled from older Barbie movies. Elina only shows up for a little while, even though she's on the cover. There are no songs that I can remember, and the whole thing just seemed rushed.

This is my first review. I'm compelled to because of my 4 year old daughter's fantasy inspired play thanks to this movie. It's about an academically inclined butterfly fairy who finds her confidence through her acquired knowledge. This knowledge becomes recognized by others, old friends, new friends, and employers who promote Mariposa to a position of leadership and trust through which she finds her own voice eliminating self doubt.

This is a great movie.

enjoy!
