"Predators" is back to basics return for the "Predator" franchise, they have juggled the elements that made the first film successful but couldn't seem to get right for the sequel or the "Alien vs. Predator" movies. "Predators" starts with the original premise of the first movie. Eight people of different ethnicities (if not occupations) are thrown into a living green hell of a jungle except they all don't know how they got there or where they are. The only thing they're sure of is that they were involved in some war, they saw a light and the next thing they remember is waking up as they fell into the jungle.

As the eight get to know each and their surroundings, "Predators" relies on the camaraderie of the individuals and the stress of the situation for each character to reveal themselves to each other and the audience, and they discover every one may not be what they seem. There's also a nice bit of gallows humor to lighten the moments and was one of the things that gave the original "Predator" some of it's charm.

The predators have some new toys including the spiky dogs, and we learn there are two different kinds of predators, the standard one we're used to seeing is the smaller of the species and are hunted by the larger super-predator when no other game is available.

One bit of casting I was worried about was Topher Grace, the geeky Eric Forman of "That 70's Show," he seemed miscast or ill fitted for Eddie Brock in "Spiderman 3," and here he's the one element that doesn't fit, but he isn't supposed to, and he looks right for the part and delivers a role that at first looks like a straightforward but has some twists. Laurence Fishburne does a near-cameo as Noland, a soldier marooned on the planet and who may be from the Vietnam era, I think he hums a bit of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" used to such great effect in Apocalypse Now.

I at first thought "Predators" was directed by Robert Rodriquez and that was one of the reasons I was looking forward to seeing the movie. I was a little disappointed that Rodriquez only produces, but this movie does incorporate some of the feel of a movie directed by Rodriquez but that may be because "Predators" is based on a screenplay Rodriguez wrote sixteen years ago . Directing is Nimrod Antal and he moves the movie tautly along never veering off course or too far off course, and he does add some visual artistry that hasn't been seen in any of the previous movies but gives us a sense of the alieness of the world the characters find themselves trapped on.

"Predators" is conscious of the events of the first "Predator" movie and the climatic battle is a tweaked version that is an homage to Arnold's battling of the predator while building on some of the inferred weaknesses of the predators. "Predators" is a good telling of a "Predator" story, using bits of the original and adding its own devices to the "Predator" mythology.

It has taken a string of awful sequels for someone such as Nimrod Antal to step up and take the Predator franchise back to its roots of gore, suspense and plain fear, but does it do these things well? "Predators" sets it story deep within the nostalgia of fans with a jungle setting similar to the original. We are introduced to an unconscious Royce, a hardened, ex-military mercenary played by Adrien Brody, free-falling from the sky over the jungle. After a warm welcome from fellow drop ins, the newly formed team of eight begin to make sense of their surroundings.

"Predators" builds the tension between the characters similarly to that of the original with fear and uncertainty clouding their minds. The eerie-ness and unfamiliarity of the environment and it's contents are also set just as in the first film. The building of this tension plays out smoothly and doesn't rush itself to get to it's point (the whole alien planet/we are being hunted/"If it bleeds, it can be killed" deal) Not until the end of the film does it feel rushed and out of balance with the beginning and midpoint. The chemistry between the characters doesn't bore at all, even with their backgrounds as "the most dangerous killers on Earth" the flow of dialect and development with each character is enough to hold the viewer's interest and move the story along realistic grounds. A very interesting note is how the characters explain their backgrounds and solidify their characters through the traps set within the film (theirs and others.) There are also many specific pieces paying homage to the original, such as the explanation of the Hunters and a few of the battle sequences.

Speaking very shortly about the gore, it plays its part in solidifying the harsh settings the characters are placed in and the brutality of the creatures they are faced against, (Most notably the campsite of the Predators and what every fan wanted to see, the taking of the "trophies.") unlike the past two sequels (*shudders*) where the first was devoid of nearly any gore and the second making it seem laughable and rendering it useless.

I have only two gripes about the film, one being the pacing near the end, (as mentioned earlier) after meeting with another survivor named Nolan (Laurence Fishburne) and the events leading to another encounter with the Predator creatures, the remaining survivors start to die off quite fast. Even though the plan made before the set chase is clear, I felt that the suspense kind of died after that leaving only one minor twist afterwards. Oh and Topher Grace (I think you will see him mentioned in many reviews to come for the movie) Didn't leave a strong enough impression. Without giving too much away about him, I believe that his character's motives could have been fleshed out a little better than the film made them.

Bottom line, "Predators" plants its feet in the ground and exclaims with confidence that "this is more than a sequel, it's a return to form." and a return very well needed. Even with it's numerous similarities, "Predators" is able to stand on it's own with a strong cast and a smooth mix of violence, gore, charisma and chemistry and screams possibilities of sequels to come.

I don't get out to the theater much, so when my 9 and 11 year olds suggested we go to the movies on a hot and rainy Sunday, I thought it would be a nice way to spend the day with the kids. "So what'll it be boys? Toy Story 3? Despicable Me?" Their reply in unison: "PREDATORS!!!" Actually I wasn't at all surprised since lately they've been spending most of their video game time online with Aliens vs Predator. Truthfully I couldn't have been happier with their choice because that's really what I wanted to see most too.

In the end no one was disappointed. Predators is a great action movie that not only pays homage to the original, but brings the Predator franchise back to the brutal violence and fast moving story telling that made the first one a classic. Kudos to Director Nimród Antal and Producer Robert Rodriguez for not making any of the plethora of mistakes that were made with the sub-par Predator 2 or any of the AvP movies.

All the action looked real. All of the Predators (and other monsters) looked real. All of the acting is really good. Although I must say that I had a hard time swallowing Adrian Brody as the lead tough guy. Brody comes across as more of a softy to me. If I had to seek out a complaint it might be that Brody was a bit miscast, but not so much so that it took away from the thoroughly entertaining experience that I had with Predators.

The story is very similar to the first one. A group of mostly soldiers (or soldier types) are in a mysterious jungle and soon realize that there's a role reversal going on: they are no longer hunters, mercenaries or whatever; they are the hunted. And they are going to need a lot of firepower and strategy in order to walk away alive from the situation that they are in.

I guess if I had to "unEarth" another negative it would be that the storyline is quite familiar. But Antal and Rodriguez introduce enough new concepts and twists to keep this sequel pretty fresh looking and not as predictable as you may think. If you were a big fan of the 1987 cult classic like I was, I believe that you'll find that this 2010 reintroduction to the Predators will be a welcome one...like it was for me.

A few words of caution to anyone that saw my comment about bringing the kids to this movie: it is not a family film. It earns its R rating. I'm just a little more liberal when it comes to what I think will warp the little minds of today's youth. So use your discretion.

Honest reviews on Predators (+ Digital Copy) (2010)

I can only imagine someone liking this film if they've never seen the original, because it breaks no new ground in the franchise. It works double-time to copy the original's high points, right down to Adrien Brody and Alice Braga slavishly aping Arnold Schwarzenegger and Elpidia Carillo. I struggle to grasp so many creative people approaching such a popular franchise and producing such an uninspired product.

Eight people, mostly men, wake up in freefall over a bizarre jungle, strapped into chutes and packing heat, but with no idea how they got there. They are conscientiously multi-racial and multi-national, but they all speak English. Perhaps their captors checked their résumés. When strange critters with dozens of tusks attack, the humans realize they're trapped in an alien game preserve, and they're the designated prey.

First, the underrated Danny Trejo deserves better than this film gives him. Laurence Fishburne is wasted in Gary Busey's Predator 2 role. This movie offers a checklist of Unlikely Heroes Being Chased stereotypes. Adrien Brody makes a particularly unconvincing action figure. We scarcely see the shimmery effect that was so creepy in the first film. And since when does the Predator's battle cry sound like Chewbacca?

This movie does nothing to build tension. It never convinces me that these human characters deserve to live. The action scenes appear unmotivated, and the dialog sounds like it was written by a computer that ate the original script and spat back something passably similar. Robert Rodriguez is better than this, as is this cast. After interminable sequels, I wish they'd stopped after the first one.

***SPOILERS***

I was around to witness the first Predator in the movie theater, and I loved it, re-watching it many many times in my teen years. Did not care for Part 2, and absolutely hated the AVP crossovers. So along comes this movie, with a small dude in the lead role, and an almost identical setting as the first. Why not just call it a remake with horribly bad casting? I had no hope of liking this movie, but I thought I'd give it a chance anyway just to see "how much is this gonna suck?"

Well, the answer is: not at all! The original set the stage for this one, and I fully appreciate that, but this is a far better movie than any other in the franchise, including the first.

Adrien Brody is spectacular in this, and was actually a perfect fit. As far overboard as Arnold took his character, this is how grounded and real Royce feels. He's the good guy, but even the good guy has his flaws, just like everyone else. And, by the way, those flaws are totally understandable. Amazing job.

Mirrored scene: the way the Japanese dude stood up to the Predator, similar to the way Billy tried to hold his ground on the bridge in the original. Different result though, and one of the coolest scenes in the movie, very similar to an old Kung Fu/Samurai flick.

I loved the way the Classic Predator was smaller and weaker than the Black Super Predator, as if to say, "yeah remember that one that Arnold killed, weak. This one is the real badass."

Another small touch that I really liked was the fact that the guy and girl both survive. In the original, it was all about "I'm the tough guy, I survive on my own." Well, times have clearly changed: "We, as a couple, are stronger together." Huh. Family values creeping into a gory action flick. A nice touch, I thought.

One reviewer said that he had to wait an hour for the action to start. I have no idea what he was waiting for. The opening scene shows the main character waking up in freefall onto a mysterious alien planet. And from then on, the action is relentless.

So, I went into this movie expecting a complete mess, and I ended up going on a wonderful ride. The best action movie I've seen in a long while, and I expect many repeat viewings. The bar has been set to a new high for the Predator franchise.

Maybe there should be a law that only children should review movies for

children. Asking some adult critic to get off his/her lofty perch and

roll around in the mud of childhood might be a bit of a stretch.

Is "Planes" bland, derivative pablum with a "feel-good" message? Sure,

if you are over 30. I was lucky to see it with my 8-year-old grandson

and his two similarly aged friends. They loved it and talked about the

characters all evening.

Being Disney, it had excellent graphics, funny sight gags and naughty

references that flew (literally at times) over the heads of the kiddies

(vasectomies figure big here). If you are an adult who loves airplanes,

there are cartoon versions of some real beauties especially the Gee Bee

Super Sportster, a barrel-shaped monster from the 1930's, and the

stolid F4U Corsair, modeled after WWII ace Ira Kepford's bird.

As far as the plot; that's unimportant. It is indeed boilerplate but

for kids, it's the sheer thrill of watching an action-packed Saturday

matinée, laps adorned with popcorn and soda containers, that matters.

Let the critics sip Chardonnay over their computers in disdain. The

kids don't care.

The most important part...my two sons LOVE IT!! I can't wait to give this to them for Christmas. I showed my 3 1/2 yr old and my 18month old the trailer the night before and they were glued to the TV. I took my 3 1/2 year old to see it the next day. It was only his second movie theater experience--the first was the most recent Ice Age movie and we left because he could care less about Ice Age. But he knows the Cars movies by heart, and he can relate to them. He sat through the entire movie, quietly, enthralled in it! I didn't take the little one because I was afraid he wouldn't be able to sit through it-I wish I would have. Now they both love anything related to Planes. Lil one asks EVERY DAY to watch the trailer on my phone--over, and over, and over! I love to hear him try to say "Chupacabra"! Oldest got to actually build Chupacabra at Lowe's Build and Grow clinic. "Chupe" has flown many miles since! AWESOME kids movie! I just wish I could get it today!

'Planes' Review. By Owen Zupp

Author: 50 Tales of Flight: From Biplanes to Boeings

Famous movie franchises can be like famous families. They can benefit from association, but they can also suffer at the hands of unending comparisons. And this may well be the case for 'Planes'.

In terms of a movie, 'Cars' was a massive success and taking this tale to the next level was undoubtedly the goal for Disney. In terms of media, marketing and merchandising, transforming 'Cars' into 'Planes' was a relatively straightforward exercise, however, it was a greater leap of faith to transform the movie.

Without being a spoiler, the 'Cars' template was overlaid on the 'Planes' concept and then tweaked here and there. The backdrop is once again a race circuit, albeit around the world, and the shifting fortunes play out on a leader board. The central character is not a shiny 'Lightning McQueen', but the little plane that could. Once again, a wise old character tempers the star's impetuosity and there is even a love interest, although it has shifted to a pair of co-stars.

There is no escaping the quality of the film's production. The animation, 'camera' angles, settings and colour are all first class. The audience even captures a sense of flight as the aircraft pitch and roll about the big screen. Visually, 'Planes' is captivating.

What is missing to some degree is the humour stemming from spontaneity that 'Cars' brought to the table. Achieving this was always going to prove a difficult task given that the first franchise had set a benchmark of great expectations and conjured preconceptions in the minds of the audience. Funnily enough, if a template was being applied, this film may have benefited from employing another 'Mater'. A goofy side-kick providing comic relief right on cue.

Personally, I enjoyed 'Planes', but then again, I couldn't sit more in the centre of Disney's target demographic profile if I tried. I am an aviation enthusiast with a young family. I was always probably going to give this film '5 Stars' as it offers another opportunity to share cherished laughter and common ground with my children. However, the real test for 'Planes' will come from those not so centrally located in Disney's cross-hairs. Can it possibly have the far-reaching impact of the highly successful 'Cars' films? It is a very, very tough act to follow. In the future, 'Planes 2' could actually benefit from being one step removed from the other franchise and build upon its own identity.

For me, there is one final acid test for the film. I was lucky enough to see the movie on its opening day in the United States, but I am now keen to see the looks on my own kids' faces when 'Planes' lands here in Australia. Only then will I be able to truly rate the success of 'Planes'. I'll get back to you then...

I took my 2 year old to see this twice. He is a huge cars fan so I thought what the heck he will love this.....was I ever so right!! Not only did he sit still the entire movie, I too enjoyed it as well. Would definitely recommend this to any Disney/Pixar collector!!!

My two year old daughter loves to fly, and asks pilots to let her visit the cockpit when we travel (& at this point may believe this is a right, not a privilege). She likes to go watch planes land and take off at our local airport. She loved the movie and weeks later still mentions scenes to me on occasion. She was VERY excited about the pink airplane, and liked the yellow one, too...and of course loved Dusty. As for me, a pilot for over 20 years who has done aerobatics in small jets, flown for an airline and even flown in combat, I really enjoyed the full motion "camera shots." Great job, Disney! But....we are a little disappointed there aren't more pink airplane toys and books and other marketing items. We women pilots are a growing percentage of the pilot population.

I have been waiting for a release of the full season for quite some time as I'm sure many others have. Definitely support this release,it is clearly targeted for Bronies being an exclusive like this and the alleged bonus content like audio commentary with the cast and crew. Supporting this will surely lead to more DVD releases, perhaps even Blu-ray!

It doesn't matter if you'd rather have Blu-ray. Good sales of this will lead to Blu-ray. It doesn't matter if you have access to Netflix streaming or iTunes or YouTube for the episodes. They don't have audio commentary. Find the money for this and support the official release!

Update (11/27/12): According to Seth's review of this DVD on Equestria Daily, the commentaries on this disc are amazing. I share his sentiment even now, and I can confirm my agreement with him after I receive the DVD.

Update (12/13/12): I received my DVD days ago, but I just wanted to confirm that this is a great 4-disc DVD set. The commentaries are especially interesting, although the only new voice credit information that we learned that wasn't already known was that Tabitha St. Germain voiced the stallion who screams in "The Best Night Ever" after Rainbow Dash knocks and catches him.

Best Deals for My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Season One

Putting aside the whole "brony" phenomenon, this show is still well worth the price, for a number of reasons:

The characters: This is where the show really shines. The characters are all very well-rounded and surprisingly complex for a show aimed at this age group; it avoids lumping the characters into stereotypical roles. For example, in just about any other show, Rarity would be a stereotypical girly-girl, obsessed with boys, shopping, and hair. Here, she's certainly a fashionista, but she's also a competent businesswoman, something of an artist, and knows how to handle herself in dangerous situations. All the cast members have a similar level of development, which lends itself really well to the slice-of-life nature of the show.

The character designs and animation are great. It's cute and endearing, but not to the tooth-rot degree of previous generations, and it's still good for the occasional action sequence. As a bonus it's very expressive and surprisingly detailed for a flash-based cartoon.

Ditto for the music; it doesn't necessarily stick out, but it definitely enhances the show as a whole.

Good writing: On the whole, the show avoids most of the pitfalls of kid shows by using lots of character-based humor and self-awareness that can appeal to viewers of any age and rarely feels patronizing towards the adult audience. You don't need to be a kid to find it funny. At the same time, the plots are generally executed well enough that they don't feel like rehashes of common plotlines, and even when the plots are quite simple they're still entertaining due to the charm that the characters bring to everything.

Good Acting: There's some serious voice talent here; Tara Strong (Twilight Sparkle) is basically the patron saint of voice acting, Andrea Libman displays some impressive range (voicing both Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, two characters who have almost opposite personalities), Ashleigh Ball gives Rainbow Dash and Applejack very distinct voices, and Tabitha St. Germain does a great of job making Rarity into an entertaining and balanced character.

This isn't to say that Season 1 is totally without fault; like all things, it has a few rough spots (In particular, the Cutie Mark Crusader based episodes can seem a bit same-y due to the characters having the same motivation in each), but overall it's consistently high quality and well worth checking out, even if you aren't a kid. I've found that it has a degree of quality and subtlety that sets it apart from a lot of other children's programming.

EDIT: Now that I have the DVD, I'm just going to throw in a few comments about the physical media aspects. I haven't had time to watch everything yet, but I've watched a few episodes worth on the various discs and they look good so far.

1. The commentaries are very entertaining and interesting. They aren't particularly ground-breaking, but it's fun to hear about some of the behind-the-scenes stuff from the show's staff. There's a good selection of people from actors, to writers, to producers, and they definitely offer some interesting insights into the show.

2. The audio and video quality are great. It's not hi-def, but it's still perfectly good quality that really demonstrates the skill of animators and composers.

3. The physical DVD box itself is sturdy, if without frills.

The only things I can really complain about are rather insubstantial, but in the interest of fairness I'll include them anyway:

1. The box artwork. They use some of the same stock vectors that they use for 90% of the merchandise, which isn't bad in and of itself, but having seen it everywhere else it feels a bit lazy when it would have been fairly easy to use something new. Also, one of the DVD's has an image of Princess Cadance, who doesn't actually appear in the series until the end of the second season. It doesn't bug me, but I guess a kid could get confused wondering who the pink pony on the DVD is.

2. The menu music. It's a loop of the "My Little Pony" line from the show's theme song, and if you listen to it for more than about 20 seconds it starts to get a bit annoying. Again, an extremely minor issue, but one that could have been really easily solved by just sticking in some of the show's (excellent) BGM instead of a 10-second loop.

So basically, the show itself is awesome, the DVDs maintain the quality, and the only issues are so insubstantial that they're barely worth mentioning. They certainly aren't important enough to knock any stars off the rating. If you were on the fence about buying the DVD, do it, it's completely worth it.

(Note: I haven't checked out all the special features, like the coloring pages and whatnot on the fourth disc, but I doubt those will really factor much into the rating either)

I'm not going to waste time talking about the show. If you want to know what it's about, read any of the other 80+ reviews lavishing praise on the series, or, better yet, record a few episodes from the Hub on your DVR or Tivo. I'm going to discuss the stuff people reading these reviews actually care about: picture/sound quality, packaging, and extras.

Picture/Sound Quality = This set looks as good as any of the other MLP:FiM DVDs released by Shout! Factory. Really, this show can only look so good on DVD. The picture quality is great for a Flash-animated show on DVD, but it won't look great if you're used to the 1080p iTunes releases of the episodes.

Packaging = This set contains four DVDs in one case. Each disc is well-protected and easy to access. The art on the front and back of the case is pretty good. I'm less thrilled with the illustrations on the third and fourth discs (third disc has an illustration of Princess Cadance, a character not introduced until the Season Two finale! while the fourth disc has a questionably illustrated Princess Celestia). This is all nit-picking, though. Everything is bright and colorful. The case comes with a slip-cover illustrated the same as the case. The case itself is see-through, and the opposite side of the paper with the cover art displays a very pretty layout of various characters walking around Ponyville while also listing the various episodes in the set.

Extras = I counted six episodes with full commentary tracks (Friendship is Magic parts 1 and 2, Winter Wrap-Up, Suited for Success, The Show Stoppers, and The Best Night Ever). Commentators for these episodes include a couple of Hasbro execs, Jayson Thiessen, James Wootton, Nicole Oliver, Cathy Weseluck, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain, and Daniel Ingram. The commentators have a lot of fun talking about these episodes, although, far and away, my favorite commentary so far is the one for "Suited for Success," in which Daniel Ingram talks quite a bit about the difficulties in finalizing the songs in that episode. There's nothing mind-blowing in these commentaries, but it is fun to hear Ingram talk about the music and the voice actors talk about the various characters.

Beyond the commentaries, there are short "Pony Profiles" in which the Mane Six are briefly introduced, downloadable coloring sheets, and two sing-a-longs (for the extended version of the title theme and At the Gala, respectively). These are mainly for children, but the sing-a-longs are definitely cute.

All-in-all, this is a solid set, and well worth investing in if you want to support the show's official release. Let's buy enough of these that Shout! Factory releases high quality Blu-Rays of these eps.

VICTORY ROAD 2008

World X Cup Elimination Match: Team TNA (Curry Man, Alex Shelley, Chris Sabin) vs. Team International (Alex Koslov, Doug Williams, Tyson Dux) vs. Team Japan (Milano Collection A.T., Masato Yoshino, Puma), vs. Team Mexico (Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, Averno) All I can say is holy crap, this is one hell of a opening match & X division matches that that I can remember seeing in quite a while. They went over 20 mins. & was just resembled the what TNA means...total nonstop action & worthy of the "this is awesome" chants. Look towards the end when Team Japan's Masato Yoshino goes for an off the top rope dropkick onto Alex Shelley, it almost looks like he was in slow motion in midair.

Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love A nice average match...nothing really noteworthy here.

Jay Lethal vs. Sonjay Dutt They went back & forth with Lethal eventually being more aggressive at times than he normally is to the point where even Val got worried & kept trying to talk some sense into Lethal which backfired in the end. Solid match overall.

"Fans Revenge" Lumberjack Match: Tag Team Champions L.A.X. vs. Beer Money Inc. (Robert Roode & James Storm) For those who didn't see the last one at No Surrender '06...the Fans' Revenge Match is a lumberjack match where the lumberjacks are regular fans & they have leather straps to use whenever Roode or Storm leaves the ring. With the fans being heavily biased towards L.A.X. (even wearing L.A.X. shirts to ringside), Jackie refused to come to ringside before the match started & that was put over throughout the entire match as Storm & Roode where just strapped nonstop every single time they left the ring yet Homicide was able to go out & drink Storm's beer right at the beginning with no problems. Concidering the stipulation, the match was average.

TNA Womens Champion Taylor Wilde vs. Awesome Kong In a nutshell, Kong dominated Taylor a majority of the match with Taylor getting a few quick shots & pin attempts here & there before reversing Kong's powerbomb into a foward roll. I personally didn't care for this match & was a step down from Kong's previous series with Kim & O.D.B. The only thing noteworthy was how the crowd was more for Kong than Wilde.

World X Cup Finals/Ultimate X Match: Kaz (Team TNA) vs. Daivari (Team International) vs. Naruki Doi (Team Japan) vs. Volador Jr. (Team Mexico) Team TNA was in the lead for this match but Kaz (leader of Team TNA) had a hurt arm throughout the bout that effected him right from the start. This reminded me of how King Of The Mountain was at Slammiversary in that it wasn't the best one they've done but it wasn't a bad match either. Various spots to look out for was Davari shoving Doi off the top of the side structure, Kaz backflipping Doi who ended up doing a low blow headbutt onto Volador (who was hanging off the cables) on the way down, and the insane leg drop from Kaz off the top of the steel structure onto Davari who was crawling across the cables.

Full Metal Mayhem Match: AJ Styles, Christian Cage, Rhino vs. Kurt Angle & Team 3D TNA had the fans vote throughout the PPV on weather this was going to be a Tables Match, Falls Count Anywhere, or the match that Rhino asked for & won the vote in Full Metal Mayhem...and for those wondering, Full Metal Mayhem is TNA's version of a TLC match except you win by pin/submission. This match made up for the Ultimate X match in terms of all the crazy spots & just chaos all over the ring such as Cage's dive off the Ultimate X structure onto Angle & 3D, Team 3D's double teams through tables like the 3D on Christian & a doomsday device on Rhino that injured Devon's ankle. Overall, this was a very fun match.

TNA Champion Samoa Joe vs. Booker T This PPV was a homecoming for Booker T as they had video footage of Booker visiting various places in Houston throughout the night such as his wrestling school & his house to heavily put Booker over as having the "hometown advantage" even down to the fans cheering Booker & had a "If Joe Wins, We Riot" sign (please try to be original when doing your signs people). This was an above average match with Joe being busted open early & showing the effects of it throughout the match. The bigger issue was the "controversal" ending where Sharmell slapped Joe on the outside and it caused Joe to snap & going nuts on everyone from referees to security while beating on a bleeding Booker T before Sting eventually showed up & did 'what he had to do" before Sharmell counted Booker's fall on Joe & walking out with the TNA Title.

In the end, the only bad match for me at least as Widle/Kong but the rest of the card had matches ranging from average to solid with the heavy standouts being the opening match & Full Metal Mayhem. In the end, the PPV was enjoyable.

HARD JUSTICE 2008

X Division Champion Petey Williams vs. Consequenses Creed They didn't do anything heavily fast paced or "spotty" like the sterotypical X division match but this was a good solid encounter between the two with Petey always looking for the Canadian Destoryer but Creed was able to keep countering the move with Rhaka Khan & Sheik Abdul Bashir (WWE's Davari) getting involved at times. One moment to look out for was when Creed attempted a somersault senton but ended up hitting his back on the apron on the way outside the ring.

Taylor Wilde, Gail Kim, ODB vs. The Beautiful People Awesome Kong w/Traci Brooks as the special referee This was a fun match featuring all the main Knockouts that would have been worthy of being on their DVD set if it happened earlier. This was a tag match that had everyone get their moment to shine along with good storytelling involving Awesome Kong's dominance along with some comedic moments like O.D.B. "freshing up" with Velvet Sky's spray. Fun tag match.

TNA Tag Team champions L.A.X. vs. Beer Money Inc. Unlike how their gimmick match was last month, this was a more old school regular tag team match between both teams that went back & forth between both teams with some standout moments like Hernandez "border tossng" Homicide over the top rope onto Beer Money outside the ring & even the managers/valets getting into it on the outside at one time. Great match that saw Beer Money win the Tag Team Titles.

Black Tie Brawl N' Chain Match: Jay Lethal vs. Sonjay Dutt For those who don't understand the title of the match, this was a tuxedo/chain match that quite honestly was a stepdown from their Victory Road match because of the gimmick stipulations involved. They tried but I just couldn't get into this one & was the only flop of the night to me.

Jersey Street Fight: Christian Cage & Rhino vs. Team 3D When you mix the words "street fight" & "Team 3D", you'll get exactly what you expect in that it was a brawl that went all over the place. From brawling in the crowd to the ringside area to inside the ring itself. There were tons of fun moments to watch like the old school ECW "Use My Sign" spot, Christian Cage's frog splash off the top of a ladder, and Rhino giving a gore into a table that didn't give. Fun brawl to watch but look out for what happened with Johnny Devine & Abyss making cameos after the match.

Last Man Standing: AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle Eventhough this was labeled a "Last Man Standing" match, this is in reality a traditional "Texas Death Match" with the difference between the two matches being that in this case, you have to score a pinfall/submission fall before the referee starts counting the other wrestler out. Just like their Slammiversary match, these two put on one hell of a wrestling match as they worked a great mat based match along with getting more aggressive as the match went on with moments like Kurt suplexing A.J. into the steel guardrail, both men attempting each others finishing moves on each other, the move that ended the match that will make you cringe, and the aftermath that caused Sting to make an appearence. Once again, Angle & A.J. gave us the match of the night.

Six Sides Of Steel Weapons Cage Match: TNA champion Samoa Joe vs. Booker T Just like the Lethal/Dutt match, this was a heavy drop from their match last month at Victory Road because of the way the match was set up. This was similar to the last cage match Joe had with Kurt Angle at LockDown where they were trying to go one way but when that wasn't working, they switched to something else in that it was both men using the weapons non-stop right from the start but then went back to having a wrestling match. Besides the ending with the gutair that set the stage for the upcoming months in TNA, this was a nice match for what it was but nothing special.

In the end, the only real flop here was the Lethal/Dutt match because of the heavy gimmick overload involved & I thought the Joe/Booker rematch was disappointing due to it also being real gimmicky at the beginning & not given alot of time to do much with eventhough they made the best of it. But besides that, it was just like Slammiversary in that the rest of the card was completely enjoyable.

NO SURRENDER 2008

No Surrender turned out to be one of those PPV's like how the recent Turning Point & LockDown events where it just seemed like nothing was clicking or standing out to make this seem like an event where is you skip it, you aren't missing anything. This PPV had some of the weakest showings from their divisions in a long time (Taylor Wilde vs. Angelina Love & Beer Money vs. L.A.X.), trying to reuse concepts that just didn't work at all (the Mixed Martial Arts match between A.J. Styles vs. Frank Trigg that resulted in "We Want Wrestling" & "Fire Russo" chants that that TNA production team did a close up of the crowd when they were chanting it), and matches that ranged from around okay to just average (Prince Justice Brotherhood vs. Rock N' Rave Infection, O.B.D. vs. Awesome Kong, Matt Morgan/Abyss vs. Team 3D, Sonjay Dutt vs. Jay Lethal in a Ladder Match). The only real standouts on this card were the X Division title match between Petey Williams vs. Consequenses Creed vs. Sheik Abdul Bashir & the main event featuring TNA Champion Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle vs. Christian Cage (Booker T couldn't make it due to the Hurricane in Texas) as they were the two best wrestling matches on the card that actually went past "first gear" & hooked the crowd.

So in the end, you get one 3 star PPV's that was worth watching Victory Road & one 4 star that's worth going out of your way to see (Hard Justice) while you get another one that that's a two star event because only 2 matches I would watch more than once (No Surrender) but the positives outweight the negatives so this is a set I would recommend.

For the price you can not beat this product. You get 3 TNA DVDs for the price of one. And, If I am not mistaken, these are 3 dvds that you can not get anywhere else. Sure, there are some dog matches on the PPVs, but who is going to like every match. I would say, buy this DVD for the XCup match at Victory Road. Great match and one that even my wife put down her reading and watched.

Best Deals for TNA: Cross the Line PPV 3 Pack - Christian Cage (2008)

Cross the Line is a 3 pack consisting of TNA's recent ppv releases; Victory Road '08, Hard Justice '08, & No Surrender '08. None of these titles are available individually. This is a pretty good set to get. With some of these matches going in had stupid and idiotic storylines, most of them paid out. All 3 events for the most part has very good match cards.

Victory Road 2008

1. 12 Man Elimination Match

Team TNA vs. Team Japan vs. Team Mexico vs. Team International

Fantastic opener! You couldn't ask for anything more from this match up. There was great action flying everywhere. I swear the Motor City Machineguns are a pair of jumping beans. They provided phenomenal action along with the other competitors. Awesome match. 5/5

2. Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love

Pretty average knockouts match. Velvet Sky interfered here and there. But nothing out of the ordinary. 2.5/5

3. Jay Lethal vs. Sonjay Dutt

This wasn't your typical fast paced x-division match. There were a couple of nice and exciting spots. A good match. 4/5

4. Fans Revenge Match for the TNA Tag Team Titles

LAX vs. Beer Money Inc.

In this match there were a couple of people outside with leather belts ready to hit Beer Money whenever they were thrown outside. I felt that part of the match took away a great deal. These two teams could have put on a better match. 3.5/5

5. TNA Knockouts Title

Awesome Kong vs. Taylor Wilde

Kong just dominated Wilde in this match. Wilde got a couple of shots in. But Kong just toyed with Taylor throughout the whole match. Better then what I expected it to be. 3/5

6. Ultimate X Match

Kaz vs. Sheik Abdul Bashir vs. Naruki Doi vs. Volador Jr.

Not as good as previous Ultimate X matches but it did have its own highlights of the match. Kaz was great. A couple of good spots but the big spot was when Kaz dropped a leg drop from the top of the ultimate x post. But I really expected more. 4/5

7. Full Metal Mayhem

Kurt Angle & Team 3D vs. AJ Styles, Rhino, & Christian Cage

This was a very good match. Angle & Styles were continuing their little feud in this match which gave it more hype. Rhino looked to be fire upped out there. Christian had a couple of good spots of his own as well. 4.5/5

8. TNA World Title

Samoa Joe vs. Booker T

TNA hyped this match up to be some kind of homecoming for Booker t. Showing promos of him all throughout the night. This match was more physical then anything. Joe and Booker brawled on the outside and then just let loose. It ended in a no contest. Sting came out and dropped Joe. Not the best main event. 4.25/5

Hard Justice 2008

1. X-Division Title

Petey Williams vs. Consequences Creed

This was a darn good match. Instead of going full blast, Petey and Creed kept this match at a steady pace. It had some good high flying spots. Some nice counters as well. The ending took away a little bit but it was a great match nevertheless. 4.5/5

2. Beautiful People & Awesome Kong vs. ODB, Gail Kim, & Taylor Wilde

A pretty decent match up. Everybody had a good showing. This match is worth checking out. The knockouts delivered here. 3.25/5

3. TNA Tag Team Titles

Beer Money Inc. vs. LAX

Far better match then from Victory Road. One of the best tag bouts from TNA of the year. LAX and Beer Money brawled on the outside for a good while. Homicide got isolated for the better part of the match. LAX performed some very good double teaming. But this was just a great tag team match. 4.5/5

4. Black Tie Brawl and Chain Match

Sonjay Dutt vs. Jay Lethal

To be honest, this could have been saved for Impact. The concept was stupid. TNA just destroyed this whole Macho Man/Miss Elizabeth storyline. Even the fans were chanting BORING, FIRE RUSSO, & THIS IS BULL S*** here. Decent match at best and the only weak part of the ppv. 3/5

5. New Jersey Street Fight

Christian Cage & Rhino vs. Team 3D

If you seen one street fight involving Team 3D in TNA, then you've seen them all. The match got taken to the crowd which they brawled out there. A couple of good hardcore spots once back in the ring. But if you've seen it once, you seen them all. 4/5

6. Last Man Standing

AJ Styles vs. Kurt Angle

Match of the night without a doubt. Styles and Angle upped their game for this match. This match had everything from brawling, mat wrestling, high flying, counters submission, finsher counters, stealing of the finishers, just everything. Some of the counts were very close. Also, Angle takes one of the most damnest ddts ever! But tremendous match all the way. 5/5

7. Six Sides of Steel Weapons Match for the TNA World Title

Booker T vs. Samoa Joe

A pretty good contest here. Booker and Joe use what they had around them pretty good. Most of the weapons were used appropriately. A good title match with a surprise at the end. 4.5/5

No Surrender 2008

1. Super Eric, Curryman, & Shark Boy vs. Rock & Rave Infection

Mostly comedic value and nothing else. Basically thats all for this match. Just a side note... I'm so ready for Christopher Daniels to come back. He really needs the drop the Curryman act quickly. 3/5

2. Falls Count Anywhere

Awesome Kong vs. ODB

Best women's match throughout the set. ODB and Kong got very physical. Even bringing out a table. Very good knockouts match. 3.5/5

3. Matt Morgan & Abyss vs. Team 3D

A couple of good spots here. Abyss and Morgan worked pretty well as a team against 3D. A good tag match. 3.75/5

4. X-Division Title

Petey Williams vs. Shiek Abdul Bashir vs. Consequences Creed

This was a decent triple threat for the title. Bashir isn't a great x-division wrestler. Petey and Creed kept this match interesting for the most part. A couple of good moves. A nice match for the title though. 4/5

5. TNA Knockouts Title

Taylor Wilde vs. Angelina Love

The knockouts didn't bring their game to this match. Nothing worth noting here. 2.5/5

6. Ladder Match

Jay Lethal vs. Sonjay Dutt

This was the best match between these two. Dutt and Lethal found some new ways to use the ladder. Dutt even applies a camel clutch on Lethal on top of the ladders. The match defiantely made up for their squash match at Hard Justice. 4.5/5

7. TNA Tag Team Title

Beer Money Inc. vs. LAX

This felt more of a revenge match for LAX then for them trying to actually win their titles back. Beer Money is actually getting better as a team but neither of the teams weren't quite on key in this right here. I defiantely expected a little bit more. 4/5

8. MMA Rules Match

AJ Styles vs. Frank Trigg

What the fans chanted mostly speaks for this match itself. They didn't like this match at all. It got a little bit physical but it defiantely had a bs ending. 2/5

9. TNA World Title

Christian Cage vs. Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle

It was suppose to be a fatal four way but Booker was unable to make the ppv. These 3 put on a very good show and I also feel that this match worked better as a triple threat. All 3 has a great showing. Great spots in this one as well like when Angle pulled off a double ankle lock. A very good main event. Match of the night. 4.75/5

Overall I give Victory Road 3 stars, Hard Justice 4 stars, and No Surrender 3 stars. This is a good set for the price. I recommend getting this. A good way to catch up to what happened with TNA over the summer.

I live in Gardiner, Montana (location of the Roosevelt Arch) and work in Yellowstone, and I experienced firsthand the genuine passion and forthright efforts of Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan and their staff as they took their vision and turned it into a poetic masterpiece. Their years of hard work not only in Yellowstone but throughout the entire national park system have paid off, and we are the lucky beneficiaries of their skillful and spirited tenacity.

This film speaks gently and lovingly of the National Parks idea. The majestic vistas, the enlightening interviews, the background music -woven together they demonstrate the power of "place", and fill us with a desire to further protect and honor these sacred sites.

We cannot live without the land, and we cannot live well without understanding our past. "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" is an authentic rendering of those very truths, and like all things good and beautiful, will be experienced and revered for ages to come, just as will the national parks themselves.

Not sure why people are complaining about not getting more geological data or wildlife info. This documentary is about the IDEA of our National Park systems which includes inspirations and motivations. As history lover's review says...its how (and why) our National Parks came to be. I'm sure Burns included the term "idea" for good reason. The idea that Burns goes after seems to be a philosophy against commercialism and greed which makes sense after seeing the first episode. Who cares if spirituality was one of the inspirations though? For many, appreciating nature is a spiritual or at least meditative experience regardless of what they do or don't believe. So far this documentary is organized much the same as Burns' other films. Nice music, nice scenery captured in nice camera work with nice photographsall interwoven with Park Rangers, historians, writers and other experts on the people and places mentioned. So far so good! Leave it to Burns to use National Parks to provide another reminder that not everything in this country is money motivated. If the rest of the episodes are as good as what I've seen it'll be worth a purchase.

e: Now that the series is over I can say I really enjoyed it. I feel pretty much the same as my initial review above. I do agree with some of the other reviews that this series didn't feel as cohesive as some of Burns' other films but it was still a really good one. I thought the narration and interviews had a more "scripted feel" to them. Another small gripe was that although I enjoyed the music (especially the guitar-work) I wish there was more variety. I wish they had recorded more music for this specific film so that songs weren't reused as much. It didn't detract from the film all that much though. And there is still quite a bit. When it was all said and done, not only did I learn about interesting things about interesting people and places, this film inspired more appreciation for our National Parks from me. That's enough for me to say its worth a watch and worth owning. Recommended.

Although the series suffers somewhat from repetitiveness occasioned by the need to keep re-orienting viewers as multiple story sequences are interrupted for long periods of time while first one, then another, thread is begun, I am glad that I was patient enough to view the entire collection. If you like Ken Burns's thorough and somewhat laid-back style, you will find it agreeable here as in his other series, even if this is not quite his best effort. One should bear in mind that this is primarily an historical documentary, not a travelogue or guide to the parks.

In terms of content, I'd probably give the series four stars; but I was disappointed in the video quality of the new motion-picture footage that Burns's photographers accumulated over six years of hard and dedicated work. I believe that a fundamentally wrong decision was made in the choice of medium. Burns has a love of old-style photography, and the many stunning examples of still photos were a joy to behold. I also agree with him that film is a more pleasing medium than direct-to-video. Unfortunately, it would appear that budget limitations (and perhaps portability considerations as well, as photographers were slogging through wilderness) precluded the use of 35mm film, which would have been ideal. Instead, a decision was made (by whom I have no idea) that 16mm film would be the next best thing. This is the point at which I would have decided to use direct video. Even though it may be a little lacking in warmth compared with film, there is only so much grain that I am willing to put up with in a hi-def production. My consumer-grade HD camcorder makes much clearer and cleaner video than is seen in this series.

There are a couple of points to be made in favor of the Blu-ray version, however. First, those who may be basing their purchase decision on what they saw on PBS's HD telecast should know that the Blu-ray disc is somewhat better; the graininess of the 16mm film really messed up the compression algorithms used in the distribution of the telecast. Also, the stunning still photos, both the old B&W's that were probably shot on 4x5 negatives, and the modern color photos, benefit from Blu-ray versus DVD, if you're willing to pay the price.

None of this criticism of the video is relevant to the DVD; nor will it matter to those with poor eyesight or who watch on less than full-resolution HDTVs or who view from a distance greater than recommended for a given screen size. I for one was hoping for something visually splendid, something like "Planet Earth" or the BBC's "Yellowstone," something, quite frankly, that would help to justify my investment in home theater. The National Parks doesn't do it.

Honest reviews on The National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009)

In reading some of the previous comments/reviews, it is apparent that it would behoove some people to look up the definition of 'documentary'. It just might be a revelation that they mainly consist of historical content. If an endless montage of pretty pictures is all it takes to satisfy you (or that is all you can handle), stick to the National Geographic channel. I am not knocking their content, but you won't find this kind of depth/detail there. This series has the perfect balance of beautiful landscapes and historical narration. The point of this documentary is not simply to show the wonderous beauty that the National Parks have to offer. Rather, it is about exploring the origin and necessity of the parks and the journey from a grand idea to magnificent fruition. Learning what it took and the obstacles faced to make the National Parks a reality is very interesting and truly awe-inspiring. We are blessed to have these amazing places that we can all call our own.

I have always been in awe when visiting America's National Parks. Like most people, I take these wonders for granted, never had a good understanding of how they came to being. This documentary, though it contains breathtaking scenes, isn't all about the ooohhhs and aaahhhhhs of the National Parks. As the title suggests it's America's Best Idea, the documentary builds on how hard fought the idea was, like many great ideas. Most of us know very little about our national treasures. We may know that John Muir fought hard as a conservationist but many may not know that trying to prevent Hetch Hetchy valley from being dammed and flooded took the life out of him. I remember learning Teddy Roosevelt was a Rough Rider in school but never knew the major role he played at conservation and that even he and all his powers as President could only made the Grand Canyon a National Monument. Those of us who enjoy the great outdoors owe it to Muir and Roosevelt and others such as Stephen Mather and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The idea didn't come easy or free and some people put their lives and/or fortunes into making sure that Nature's Majesties are conserved for all to enjoy. Besides the beautiful scenes, the documentary is very informative and educational and a must for those who enjoy America's National Parks. This series would make a very nice addition to one's video collection and a must for those who enjoy the great outdoors.

The updated VFX are great. Looks awesome on my 3D Samsung 65" TV with 3D glasses. The storyline is similar to the X-Files TV show (aliens, abductions, pregnancies, and all-around bizarreness) and is based on real police reports. Mulder and Scully would approve! If you liked Avatar or Spiderman 3 you will love Children of the X-Files in glorious 3D!

Loved "Earth's Mightiest Heroes"! Marvel has made a huge mistake by sacrificing character development for better animation. A good story can be told with stick figures and still be a good story. I guess you can tell I am not impressed with "Avengers Assemble". If I wanted this type of story telling I would watch "Marvel Superhero Squad" more often(Hero up!). But really, a two episode release!? If it was better than EMH I would probably buy it. So far the writers of these "Squadies" have not shown any promise in these first two episodes. Go back to the EMH formula and release a 13 episode or more DVD and I will buy it.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Sorry Pass.... wait for a 13 or 26 episode release, oh and bring back EMH while your at it, AA is an awful replacement. *Just wanted to edit my review slightly as it appears based on the now revealed running time (112 minuuets) that there will be at least 3 "bonus" episodes. One of these has been revealed as a Hulk & The Agents of SMASH episode "Galactus Goes Green", which as of this date has not even aired on Disney (that I assume will change, although EMH S2 had an episode that never aired at all for some odd reason...). The others will probably be an Ultimate Spider-Man and something else featuring as many crossovers as possible. Bonus Episodes are nice, but still not enough to justify a purchase especially when a season is 26 episodes long.

With only half of USM S1 on DVD to date (and the 13 disc 2 DVD set didn't even have the episodes in order, just randomly chosen episodes featuring other heroes), this could get messy very fast. Its nice Disney has three shows with the same animaiton set in the same universe for consistancy, despite their mediocre storytelling, but releasing DVD's seemingly at random from all different series is going to only frustrate fans. After this Impulse DVD gets released, do the right thing Disney, release the rest of USM S1, and moving forward just release everything else in chronological order. Thank you.

what's the next release going to have?

1 episode?!

this show has hardly begun airing the 1st season!

you can thank Disney for buying Marvel for this strategy.

Honest reviews on Marvel's Avengers Assemble: Assembly Required

Avengers Assemble is half-baked and inferior across the board to Avengers: EMH in story, character development, dialogue, animation and ultimately, substance. This is not completely surprising as Marvel continues to make decisions that prizes lining up the continuity of all forms of multi-media (comic book, cartoons, films) to emulate the product as exemplified in the films. Do yourself a favor, if you really want these 2 episodes burn them off your DVR from the Disney XD on Demand channel, don't waste your money on an inferior product that values you as a consumer so little, it gives you a total of 2 episodes. Really, 2? Pathetic.
