This review is based on going to see "Epic" in the cinema with my family.

"Epic" is a beautifully created animated family film based on William Joyce's book "The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs (Harper Trophy Books). It is rather like a better execution of the same basic idea as "Arthur & The Invisibles" except that in this case the whole film is animated where "Arthur and the invisibles" had the human-size portions played by real actors and the miniature sections animated. Ironically that means that, this film having a star studded voice cast, several of whom are extremely easy on the eye, the film does not show them as they usually appear: but the characters are so beautifully drawn that you don't really mind.

Case in point: the heroine and central character, Mary Katherine (who prefers to be known as MK) is voiced by actress Amanda Seyfried and the queen of the forest, Queen Tara, is voiced by Beyonce Knowles. I imagine one or two dads would much prefer to have seen the ladies concerned rather than animated images for which they provided the voices. But that reaction won't have lasted more than a few seconds after seeing how well their characters were voiced and drawn. Christian Kaplan who did the casting for this film obviously did pick the cast for their voices rather than their appearance, they more than justify the choice.

MK is a teenage girl whose mother has recently died. At the start of the film she arrives at the semi-derelict house, on the edge of a forest, where her father, mad scientist Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis) lives and studies the fauna of the forest. Bomba had wrecked both his career and his marriage through his obsessive attempts to prove that an "advanced civilisation" of tiny people exists in the forest.

It probably won't be a spoiler to anyone thinking of going to see this film certainly not to anyone who has seen the trailer that Bomba's apparently preposterous theory, which no other human takes seriously, is in fact correct. Nor that his daughter finds herself magically shrunk to the same size as the tiny denizens of the forest and caught up in the constant war between two factions of forest creatures.

Although some of the less intelligent promotional material for this film presents that conflict as a battle between good and evil and I have seen it wrongly suggested that the battle in the forest might also affect our world as well the actual presentation in the film is a lot more nuanced than this. One side, led by Queen Tara (Beyonce Knowles) and her "leaf men" soldiers, represents growth, the other led by Mandrake (Christoph Waltz) and his "boggan" troops represent decay. Children or anyone else who wants to take a simple moral from the film will see Queen Tara's side as representing good while Mandrake is evil, but adults will realise that the life of the forest would actually depend on a balance between the two.

Indeed, one of the best things about the film is that the "bad guy," Mandrake, is not cartoonishly and two-dimensionally evil. Like the most dangerous villains in the real world or the best literature Mandrake is all the more formidable as an opponent because he has characteristics which in a "good guy" would be recognised as virtues. Instead of going down the all-too-familiar route of presenting the villain as being pathetic, cowardly, and full of hatred even to those closest to him, the film gives Mandrake a lot of the best lines, shows both him and his son and general Dagda (Blake Anderson) leading from the front at various stages of the film, and doesn't show them constantly plotting to betray each other.

Other strong and well voiced characters which enrich the film include Ronin (Colin Farrell) the general of the Leaf men, Nod (Josh Hutcherson), an independent minded young leafman whose dead father had been Ronin's friend, a pair of sometimes charming and sometimes aggravating molluscs, Mub the slug (Aziz Ansari) and Grub the snail (Chris O'Dowd), and a glow-worm impresario called Nim Galuu (Steven Tyler) who is also the keeper of the magic scrolls which record everything which goes on in the forest. The film also features the rapper Armando Pérez, better known by his stage name Pitbull, voicing a frog mafia boss.

Every time I go to see a new animated film I think the depiction of the characters, scenery and events could not get any more beautifully done, and every time you get to the next one you realise you were wrong, and this film is yet another visual feast. The plotting is also reasonably tight, keeping your attention, there are plenty of simple jokes for the kids and more sophisticated ones for the adults. It had me laughing at the jokes quite a few times.

Not everyone will like this film some people will see it as far too similar to "Arthur and the Invisibles" and others will consider it a bit twee and childish. But I would consider it a very good film for children up to the age of about thirteen my eleven-year-old daughter certainly loved it and which adults can enjoy with their kids.

Simply put: The animation was beyond beautiful. It was seriously a good, clean, fun and all around awesome family movie. I can't think of anything bad about it.

Best Deals for Epic (Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy) (2013)

With a name like "Epic", it has to be big, or at least it should be. I was only afraid that "Epic" would be the Michael Bay of animated movies. Following "Iron Man 3" and "Star Trek: Into Darkness" in its release date and opening the same week of "The Hangover 3" and "Fast and Furious 6", it is certainly up against big competition. Fortunately, that wasn't what I saw. What I saw was an adventure of thought-provoking depth that did exactly what I love most in movies; it took me to another world and kept me there until the credits rolled.

Mary Katherine or M.K. (Amanda Seyfried) is a character who has a distant relationship with her father and is still feeling the effects of the death of her mother. Her father has been buried in his research and there is a lot of animosity between them. He is convinced that there is a tiny culture of beings inhabiting the forest that surrounds their home. There are some deep subjects in the movie that may go over some children's heads, as well as some non-charismatic moments from Collin Farrell's Character, Ronin, which may bore you and your child to death.

Honestly though, I liked that there was some complexity to it. While the movie incorporated the things that have made other Blue Sky Studios movies ("Ice Age", "Rio" & "Robots") hits with all ages, it also had a depth and imagination to it that reminded me of movies like "The Dark Crystal", "Labyrinth" and "The Never Ending Story".

It is easy to say that "Epic" is possibly one of the most beautifully animated 3D movies I've seen to date. Again, the 3D adds to the, dare I say, epicness of the film. Nestled in the yards and woods is an epic world of Leafmen and Boggans that control the life and death of nature as we know it. The 3-dimensional world comes to life as we explore a world on the backs of hummingbirds and see streams, trees, springs and tunnels up close.

There's a little something missing with "Epic" though. There's almost a dryness that leaves some of the emotions flat and never truly capitalizes on the urgency we should feel as an audience. It wasn't hard connecting with M.K. but she too easily adapts to the task she is given and despite not knowing how she will return to normal life, she seems to go ahead without emotion; fear, joy or anything otherwise. That being said, the slug and snail characters added much needed comic relief.

I do recommend "Epic" because I enjoyed myself. Although if the writers had spent less time hammering home the nuts and bolts of the miniature world culture, which we understood in the first twenty minutes of the film, they could have spent more time making a better ending to the film and fleshing out some true and more widespread emotion. It could have been a better film, but that's not saying it wasn't more entertaining than most of the stuff out there these days.

Honest reviews on Epic (Blu-ray / DVD + Digital Copy) (2013)

This movie was a big hit with my family (husband and 3 kids 8-year old girl, 6-year old boy, 6-year old girl.) Part of the appeal is that it is one of the few animated films that seems equally targeted to girls and boys there are both a main girl and boy character, and just a tad of romance, but not so much for this to be a 'married happily ever after' princess type story. The nature animation is stunning, as is the view of the fairy world, and the human world seen from the fairy perspective. I loved the story (tho have not read the book so can't compare) and felt it was all carried off very well. Recommend!

Admittedly, they could've come up with a better name for the movie, but "Epic" is by far one of the better animated movies you'll see this decade. It's a shame that it didn't receive as much in the box office, probably due to the other movies that came out around the time. A fresh film in a sea of sequels never gets the exposure it deserves. Even so, I HIGHLY recommend this film to anyone, children and adults alike.

This movie was some of the most fun i've had with a movie in a long time. It was hilarious, emotionally deep and original on every turn. The moral and underlining tone is as relevant as ever. Going against everything you know in order to survive and actually live your life is something we all must come to terms with and this movie hits the nail on the head. The graphics are incredible, the soundtrack is heart racing and dialogue is fluidly natural.

From the previews I did not expect it to be this good but I was pleasantly surprised. This is an absolutely perfect family film. It's hilarious, touching and relevant. Everyone should see this movie.

The previews for this movie made me not want to see it at all, but I ended up taking my niece & nephew to it in the theater (both far apart in ages) and they both LOVED it, and I have to admit I did too! Actually everyone in the theater watching it was cracking up, it has a ton of hilarious lines from every character in it. Best part, it was consistently funny throughout, not just in a couple of scenes, with jokes geared for all ages. A very creative story too with the family obviously (The Croods) who are the last surviving cavemen family. Their curious teenage daughter Eep runs into a more humanly "evolved" guy, actually whose name is Guy who lets her know the world is coming to an end. The Croods are afraid of life where animals hunt you at all times, but when their cave is destroyed in an earthquake, they are forced on a journey with their survival guide, Guy to stay alive. A MUST WATCH ANIMATED MOVIE!!!! Best one I've seen in a long time! The writer/director -Chris Sanders, who made Lilo & Stitch & also How To Train Your Dragon did this one! Hopefully Dreamworks holds on to him for future animated movies, Disney definitely missed out by letting that guy go!!!

Well, I want to write a review, but I'm afraid you will think I'm a Dreamworks plant, or something.

This movie makes me hate watching movies with my kids...for the first 10 run-throughs. The reason? My kids won't stop repeating the lines and laughing and saying, "Dad, did you hear that part when he said 'blah blah blah'?"

This movies has it all. It is funny. It is inventive. It has cave drawings. It has unrefined, crazy, cave-man behavior. It has touching, heart-warming moments. It has action. It has death-defying feats. It has monsters, but interestingly no real villains...except the subtle Earth-Apocalypse hint. It has weird creatures and never-before-seen extinct species. It has politically-correct free/wild pets. It has family dinners, for the old fashioned, but less-than-perfect manners for the non-prude. It has dreams. It has in-laws (great for laughs). It has little side jokes and stories that make kids laugh, but they aren't stupid or simiple, so adults laugh too. (Kind of like Shrek: intelligent humor for adults wrapped in silly stuff for the kids = cha-ching!) I have watched it 3 times now to catch all the quick one-liners that I missed or forgot. You'll never guess how it ends because it never gives away the plot like most movies do. It is very fast paced. There are enough jokes and funny comments to fill 3 movies. You literally can't catch it all and savor the "funny" in just one viewing.

Just good, relaxing fun for all ages. If you like movies, you'll like this one...

My 7 yr old daughter took mom & Grandma to see this when it came out. She was so excited and it did not disappoint any of us. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It delivered a wonderful message for everyone! Now if only someone can come up with grown up movies that are original, excellent quality all around, heartfelt, and that stick with you & make you think long after you leave the theater, that's what we'd gladly spend our hard earned money to go and see. Keep these kinds of movies up, please :)

The much anticipated movie adaptation of "Les Misérables " has arrived, and director Tom Hooper deserves praise for infusing Victor Hugo's iconic story of Jean Valjean with drama and profound emotion. Hugh Jackman is superb as the former thief who is pursued relentlessly by his nemesis, Inspector Javert (a ruthless and bitter Russell Crowe), but Valjean focuses on redeeming himself by treating others with kindness. Anne Hathaway is affecting as the desolate Fantine, forced into prostitution in order to support her child. Valjean mercifully adopts Cosette, Fantine's daughter, after her mother's untimely death.

Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen are deliciously over-the-top as the Thénardiers, greedy innkeepers who steal from their customers and extort cash from Fantine for Cosette's upkeep while they keep the lonely girl in rags. Samantha Barks's show-stopping solo, "On My Own," is thrilling. Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried are appealing as Marius and the adult Cosette. Finally, the wonderful Colm Wilkinson lights up the screen in his brief appearance as the Bishop.

Why see this film if you have already taken in the Broadway show? First, Hooper distills the essence of the plot without getting bogged down in extraneous exposition. He elicits terrific performances from actors whose faces and voices are beautifully expressive. Since much of the dialogue is sung, it is worth pointing out that the sound quality is excellent and the performers take pains to speak and sing distinctly (not a given in today's films). Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil's score and Herbert Kretchmer's lyrics are often soaring, at other times tear-filled and poignant, and always unforgettable.

The audience with whom we viewed "Les Miserables" was visibly moved by this tale of self-sacrifice, love, and salvation. For an expensively mounted musical production, it is surprisingly intimate. We grow to care about the characters and are transported from the darkened theater to the turbulence of nineteenth century France. Vive "Les Misérables" and bravo to Tom Hooper and his exceptional cast.

You know I went to see "Les Miserables" on Christmas Day. You know I convinced family and friends to not get together for dinner on Christmas evening, as was the tradition, because seeing this film was more important. I've been waiting to see "Les Mis" for months, damnit, and I wasn't about to wait any longer. I was ready to see something phenomenal. Something that would be a sucker punch of emotion...and a chance to see some of my favorite actors in a film like I've never seen before.

"Les Miserables" is unlike any film musical I've ever seen. The level of emotion is unmatched. The performances are out of this world. The story is ambitious, and the scope is huge. It's at once a very personal story about its various characters, but at the same time, these people are singing for a generation, that has fascinating parallels to events going on today. It's an incredible feat that I didn't think could be committed to film so well.

Director Tom Hooper certainly had the courage of his convictions. A film adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh and Claude Michel Schonberg's beloved stage musical "Les Miserables" had been in development hell since the mid 1980s. The pieces for a successful film adaptation never quite came together. A non-musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel starring Liam Neeson and Uma Thurman came out in 1998, but that film was sub-par at best.

Hooper assembled a cast that doesn't seem like the best fit for a musical, including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, none of which, to my knowledge, are trained singers. He then decided that these actors, as well as everyone else in the cast, would sing live, instead of lip-synching to studio-prerecorded tracks. I had not known that movie musicals typically did it this way, and that singing live was a new and scary thing. This element would heighten emotion for the audience. This idea is superb and will show to be a game-changer for movie musicals. Each actor's performance is more intimate and personal than they would have been otherwise. Hooper really wants the viewer to connect emotionally with these characters, and for the most part, we connect with these people deeply.

"Les Mis" follows Jean Valjean (Jackman), a man who was jailed for nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread for his starving family five years for the theft, and thereafter for subsequent attempts to escape. He breaks his parole, and police inspector Javert (Crowe) dedicates his life to imprisoning Valjean again. Valjean comes across Fantine (Hathaway), an unwed mother who, after unjustly losing her job, is degraded to the point of no return, being forced to sell her hair, her teeth, her body and her dignity. Valjean promises Fantine that he will raise her daughter Cosette as his own, in her absence. Valjean then saves Cosette from the Thenardiers(Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter, pairing up in their second movie musical), neglectful guardians and scheming inkeepers, and the story picks up years later, where Cosette is a young woman (Amanda Seyfried), living mostly in peace. A young revolutionary Marius (Eddie Redmayne) falls in love with her. The Thenardier's destitute biological daughter Eponine has a hopeless and unrequited love for Marius. These young characters dive headfirst into what would become a very important part of the French Revolution.

The story of the French Revolution, as depicted in the film, is so reminiscent of Occupy Wall Street protests that went on last year a group of young idealists looking for a better tomorrow. They're willing to die in the name of a future. They're extremely passionate and exuberant. There are protests, except, you know, they're all sung.

Yes, it's all sung. Les Miserables is two hours and forty minutes of song. There's no real spoken dialogue the entire way through. Every minute is sung live as well. And if this bothers you, please skip "Les Mis" and enjoy watching something like "Twilight" or "Jack Reacher". Tom Hooper made this film a game-changer for the way a movie-musical is supposed to work. Lip-synching a pre-recorded studio version seems economical, but today, can allow for auto-tuning and editing a singer's voice. It doesn't feel personal. The voices in "Les Mis" sound raw and real. The actors sang live onset with earpieces playing piano accompaniment, with a 70-piece orchestra being added in in post production. The music sounds extraordinary. There sure as hell isn't any auto-tuning going on.

For example, take Anne Hathaway's rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream". At this point in the story, we don't know Fantine very well, but we see the struggle that she's put through. She's at her lowest point. Hathaway half-belts and half-sobs the iconic song, the entire thing being filmed in one take. It's an extremely emotional performance that will bring any person with a heart, to tears.

Criticism that I've been hearing of the film mostly revolves around the performances of Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, as Javert and Valjean. I think both of these guys did fantastic jobs, quite frankly. Crowe isn't the best singer in the world, but his voice fits the part of Javert very well. As for Jackman, well, it could be argued that he carried the entire film. I think he did a splendid job; the role of Jean Valjean is a giant undertaking, and I think he nailed it.

However, the real excellence of this film lies in the supporting cast. Everybody is perfectly cast, but particularly Samantha Barks in the role of Eponine. She played the same character in the 25th Anniversary performance of Les Miserables, only two years ago. One small criticism; my favorite part of Eponine's solo (and theme song to self-loathing masochists everywhere) "On My Own", the beginning part, is cut entirely. However, once you see what Barks does with this song it's easily forgiven.

Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen, who look like they're in "Sweeney Todd 2", are great comic relief as the Thenardiers. Cohen is the only cast member in this Paris-set film who sings in a French accent, however... I find that strange. Eddie Redmayne and Aaron Tveit are perfect as Marius and his colleague Enjolras. Redmayne's "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables", near the end of the film, will make you cry. His voice goes to extraordinary places, and in such an emotional number, where he's telling the story of his friends who are no longer with him, this is a place where the live singing truly shines.

The live singing, itself, is a huge undertaking, cinematically. Director Tom Hooper certainly had alot at stake with this project, however, there are still things that he could have done better. There are so many close-ups in the film. While they work for solos like "I Dreamed A Dream" and "Empty Chairs", they don't work for others. I also kind of feel like Hooper used the fish-eye camera lens a little too often, but these are inconsequential criticisms that don't make the film any less powerful.

I hate it when people applaud in a movie theater. I find it trite and kind of pointless, unless you're at the world premiere of the movie, with the director and actors present. However, I'm not ashamed to say that "Les Miserables" brought me to tears no less than five times. I was completely enthralled by each actor's performance, and the applause that the entire theater gave at the end was completely appropriate and well-deserved. I wanted to watch it again the minute it ended, and for a nearly three hour long film, I think that's a pretty high compliment. Don't miss it.

Grade: A+

I saw this movie a week before it came out because I won advance screening tickets and I have known the song I Dreamed A Dream my whole life but I have never seen the musical on stage or any of the adaptations before. I went into this with no expectations at all. At first I thought the movie started off kind of fragmented and I figured because it had to introduce everybody and I was right. The film ended up as it went on drawing me in more and more and making me fall in love with it and by the end i was mesmerized with how wonderful and amazing the movie is. I believe they picked perfect roles because after i saw the movie i listened to the broadway soundtrack and i believe they did very well on picking out the cast for their vocal ranges and capabilities. I think anyone who loves the musical or is a musical person should definatly see this movie because they will not be disappointed one bit by how amazing it is.

Honest reviews on Les Miserables (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2012)

I'm French and I've just seen the movie (which came out last week here). I wasn't sure I still wanted to see it after reading the terrible reviews it'd been given in France (sorry!) but I'd been so seduced by the trailer and Hathaway's voice that I went anyway and I simply loved it. I haven't read the book (I've just started actually: 60 pages out of 1600... hum) but I understand why people here find the movie rather bad: it's not exactly as "social" as Hugo wrote it. The movie concentrates on the "romantic" side rather than on the criticism of the society and the historical context of the time. Yet I was completely taken. I loved the songs (I didn't know the musical), I'm a big fan of Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman and was completely delighted by their acting. I cried as I hadn't cried in a long time in a theatre and wanted only one thing when the film was over: see it again! The only negative thing in my opinion was the singing and acting of Russell Crowe. I didn't like his voice and really thought that he couldn't act and sing at the same time. There was no emotion on his face. But still: it's a great movie! Only one piece of advice to you all: read the book!!! I know it's a very biiiiiig one but it's a French masterpiece by one of the best French writers! :-)

I've watched theater productions of Les Mis, watched screen adaptations, and read the book several times over, and this cinematic adaptation ranks highly on my list of adaptations. As a musical film, it is well put-together, utilizing a stellar cast who delivers compelling performances in both acting and singing, excellent set-up of scenes, credible costumes and sets making the period and setting of 19th century France come alive, and spectacular effects.

I read some critical reviews which found the singing of the cast members to be less than impressive. I agree only with regards to three characters Russell Crowe's Inspector Javert, and Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Thenardiers. Crowe's emoting as Javert was well done with his facial expressions credibly portraying his resolute nature and steadfast obsession in hunting Jean Valjean, but his singing just wasn't up to par although to be fair some of his songs were incredibly difficult. I felt an actor who had more of an established singing

background would have fared much better in this role. The Thenardiers' portrayal did not sit well with me either Cohen's and Helena Bonham Carter's singing performances were just plain awful.

Now that I've got the criticisms out of the way, let me comment on the positives. Hugh Jackman blew me away with his performance I avoided comparing his performance to the Broadway productions because they are two entirely different mediums. These actors had to sing live on set and Jackman's background in singing with his strong, commanding voice as well as his experience as an actor really served him well in the challenging role of lead character Jean Valjean. There were scenes where Valjean displays his inner conflict the beginning when he is railing against the injustice of his imprisonment, the scene where he is praying and reflecting on the priest's kindness to him and how he experiences this epiphany of how to transform his life, later still when he has embraced a new identity and is prospering as the Mayor of a city and his turmoil when he finds Javert has been dispatched to work in his city, so much more, and all done with impeccable finesse. Even when his voice at times breaks during a performance, I found it compelling because this is how one would expect it to be in real life emotions impacting one's voice (not that people go through life singing their emotions out all the time). It was heartbreaking, 'real', and did not feel put on at all. Jackman delivers an Oscar worthy performance and I hope he gets it.

Fantine as portrayed by the beautiful and talented Anne Hathaway (I grew from a non-fan to a fan starting from The Devil Wears Prada to the latest Batman and this) just broke my heart. That one song, "I Dreamed A Dream" was so achingly poignant and full of despair this is a woman brought so low by life's circumstances and filled with despair as I watched Fantine sing, I could only think, "God, this is how I imagined Fantine when I read the book," so really, what more could be said. Hathaway embodies Fantine her hopes, dashed dreams, and her despair with heartbreaking clarity.

Amanda Seyfried as Cossette was lovely but I would not go so far as to say it was a spectacular performance but my, what a revelation Eddie Redmayne was as Marius. I've been a bit of a fan after watching him in My Week With Marilyn, and he is amazing here as the young revolutionary who is besotted with Cossette. His voice is compelling and his yearning and aching love for Cossette is credibly conveyed by his voice in song.

Eponine as played by Samantha Barks was another favorite character who also broke my heart. Her songs, delivered with such sadness and yearning, and those haunting eyes just tugged at the heartstrings. The young actor who plays Gavroche, Daniel Huttlestone, the street urchin and young revolutionary in the making delivered a performance that is memorable for its sincerity and spiritedness.

Though the movie is rather long in length at slightly over two and a half hours, I did not feel like the movie dragged at all. Each scene was carefully set up and orchestrated and the songs and dialogue all came together beautifully. When I heard that famous line, "To love someone is to see the face of God", I wept because that scene to me at least embodied what Hugo's work was all about. This is a beautiful cinematic masterpiece and I feel richer for having watched it.

"Sector 7" delivers some nice monster mayhem and a decent story too. I couldn't wait until June to buy this decent South Korean monster film on blu-ray. I ordered the region "A" Hong Kong 3D+2D blu-ray that was released on February 23. Nice transfer. Good film. Good special effects. I haven't watched the 3D version on the Hong Kong blu-ray yet to comment about it. If you enjoy films like "The Host", "Troll Hunter", "Attack The Block", "Monsters", "Chaw", "Cloverfield", "Super 8", "The Mist", "The Relic", "Mimic" and other good creature features, then you enjoy "Sector 7" as well. By the way, I am also going to buy this blu-ray version of the film to support Shout! Factory and to support South Korean Cinema as well. Buy this film. You will not be disappointed. Highly Recommended!!!

Sector 7 is a action-horror monster film from South Korea. It's got some comedy in it as well. The movie is about an oil rig crew that has had no luck getting oil at Sector 7. Soon after most of the crew leaves the rig, they are attacked by an unknown species. There are some twists to the story pertaining to the monster that I won't spoil. Overall, the story isn't that innovative, but it is one amazing thrill ride.

What did I like? I'm a fan of monster films so I definitely liked the subject. The monster's design was also cool. The film has bits of comedy spread out across the film that I actually liked. The best part of the film was the action, though. As soon as the monster appears, it's thrill after thrill after thrill. In one word: THRILLING! It has a couple of slow-motion scenes that I actually enjoyed, even though it was over-done sometimes. Also, the pacing was fast and smooth. The whole concept of being stuck on an oil rig with a monster was creepy and effective. The acting was fine most of the time, and the music was good. Ultimately, it's an absolute blast to watch!

What did I dislike? Sector 7 really doesn't try anything new. The explanation of the monster's creation was new, but not really extraordinary. Also, some scenes just looked very bad, particularly the scenes on the motorcycles. I believe this is because I watched the 2D version, but it still looked and felt out of place. The ending was also generic and predictable, which I didn't expect coming from South Korea (they usually don't follow the same Hollywood formula).

I highly recommend checking out Sector 7. It's a great action-horror film. It had elements from movies like The Host, Relic, Deep Rising, and Aliens; it may not be better than Aliens and The Host, but it's up there with them. I'll have to try and watch it in 3D soon since it looked effective and well-made, but that's just an assumption. If you're even slightly interested, Sector 7 is available on Netflix Streaming as of 6/26/12 and I recommend you watch it whenever you have the time.

No sex or nudity, only some violence and gore. (safe compared to other monster films)

Best Deals for SECTOR 7 (3D) (Blu-ray Version) (2011)

This movie was your basic Korean sci-fi movie. The acting and plot were very straight forward and typical. The special effects were average and nothing to write home about. I found the movie watchable and would recommend it to a die hard low/mid budget sci-fi fan.

Honest reviews on SECTOR 7 (3D) (Blu-ray Version) (2011)

I have seen a million sci-fi creature films because they are my favorites, Sector 7 is a movie that will have you almost falling out of your chair. The action is none stop, visual effects are top-notch and the actors are outstanding. Once into the film about 30 minutes the action takes you on a roller coaster ride that you won't soon forget. Alien's has nothing on this bad boy. The subtiles work throughout the entire film. It shows everything on my blu-ray player and it plays in U.S. dvd players.

Compared to 'Alien' for good reason, this South Korean mega-hit (and the first film to be released in Korea in both 3D and Imax) has, as its setting, an oil drilling rig set way out to see off the coast of Korea, in sector 7. For a long time now, the drilling for offshore oil has not been going well, but when a skeletal crew is left behind to give it one last try, said crew inadvertently unleashes a very (okay, VERY) nasty creature that starts showing them what happens when you "f" around with someone's quiet time. Great action sequences, really strong CGI (that only falters in a couple of spots, otherwise very realistic), and the exact dollop of humor mixed in with the action-terror make this one I really wish I HAD seen in 3D. And DAMN can that creature even BE killed?!?

I'm not a parent. Nor do I play one on TV. This isn't to say that I wouldn't know what to do with a kid. I'm an uncle, after all, and I've been around children long enough to know that when properly nurtured their imaginations are boundless. Each holiday season at a workplace children's event, I'm amazed at how quickly the boys and girls rush to the craft table for a chance to play and putter with glues, crayons, and stencils. They'll rejoice in fashioning together the most modest gifts that they take home to give to mom or dad or a neighbor. As I watch, I can see how committed they are to building something, making it sparkle, and bringing it to life in their own unique ways. And I'm amazed at how many parents sit beside their children experiencing much the same.

After watching TALES OF THE NIGHT, I'd imagine director Michel Ocelot lives his life much the same way as those children, embracing his insatiable desire to weave fairy tales of magic, mayhem, and mystery for the fascination of children everywhere young and old alike.

(NOTE: the following review may contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters. If you're the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I'd encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment. If, however, you're accepting of a few hints at `things to come,' then read on ...)

TALES OF THE NIGHT is an anthology-of-sorts. Essentially, it's a collection of several animated shorts blended into one complete product, and it's all given the framework only a learned director like Ocelot could appreciate: the narrator is a man whose been told he's much too old to be in motion pictures, and he pairs himself with two children who've been told they're much too young. Together, they meet in an old movie theatre to explore their passion for making films. These aren't just your regular run-of-the-mill features, mind you; together, they explore the stuff of dreams and nightmares to us all. For every prince, there's a princess; and, for every princess, there's a beast who must be bested even if that means slaying it or (would you believe?) understanding it.

For not every enemy is truly an enemy when one's imagination is boundless. (And THAT's the morale to this story!) Where else are you going to find a human sacrifice with a happy ending? Where else are you going to side with the werewolf instead of the villagers trying to wipe him out? Where else can a whimsical, carefree boy best a giant bee and a giant lizard and, yet, still dismiss the fanciful charms of the fair maiden? You say you want a talking horse, well what about a horse that sings? And don't be so quick to shoo that foul bird away, little boy, because you never know what part of your happiness you might be denying! For every treachery, there's a lesson to be learned, and Ocelot's film should be celebrated in its own right for bringing class, majesty, magic, and (most importantly) MORALS to so humble a package.

Beyond the film's narrative style, Ocelot tells these stories entirely in silhouette!

While the background and foreground can take any size or shape with bright, vivid colors, his characters appear only in black, instantly making them timeless in their own right. Unlike traditional animation, there's no concentration on features except for the shape of these people; and, through the magic of invention, our three main characters the old man and the two children appear in several different ones with each subsequent tale. This stylistic choice alone could've been a disaster in the hands of a less accomplished director, but, in Ocelot's hands, it lifts these short legends to new heights. You'll never believe anyone could pack so much depth into so much blackness ever again.

TALES OF THE NIGHT is produced by Nord-Quest Productions, Studio O, StudioCanal, and Region Ile-de-France. DVD distribution (stateside) is being handled by New Video. As for the technical specifications, TALES consistently looks and sounds magnificent; no expense has been spared in the production of the disk. As there's a minimalist-style of animation used throughout, sound is particularly important (and particularly terrific!). As for the special features, there are a few: there's an 18-minute interview with Ocelot that I'd encourage anyone interested in film (and especially those interested in animation) to watch as he sprinkles the conversation liberally with storytelling philosophy that's priceless; there's a 10-minute segment titled "The Festival of Color: Storytelling Through Animation" that focuses on Ocelot's work in securing worldwide rights for children; and, of course, the theatrical trailer. It's a good assortment not great that I'll hope gets expanded upon at some point in the future as TALES is nothing short of a delight from start to finish and deserves greater exploration. For the record, this is a French-language film with English sub-titles but there is an English-dubbed track (which I watched while English sub-titles were on to make certain the clarity was solid, which it is). Plus, it's entirely family-friendly!

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE. Stories with morals are so passé these days. They were big in the late 1950's, and they certainly left their mark on American television of the 1960's, but, as of late, they've dropped off. TV and video have become glorified babysitters instead of tools for inspiration. Personally, I believe that's because everyone parents, teachers, mentors, etc. seems to have forgotten the importance of instilling lessons upon children that they can take with them on their journey through like. Fortunately, Michel Ocelot still spins yarns that'll delight a child as well as give him something to think about.

In the interests of fairness, I'm pleased to disclose that the fine folks at New Video provided me with an advance DVD screener of TALES OF THE NIGHT by request for the expressed purposes of completing this review.

This film is a continuation of Michel Ocelot's "Princes et Princesses". Both offer a selection of six short, brilliantly colored fairy tales in the style of The Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. The tales share a theme where the obvious choice of the hero or heroine is not the correct one...instead the right choice must be made from the heart, wisdom, and compassion.

It is a matter of taste, but the story set in Africa was the most unusually beautiful and the one set in Tibet was the most conventionally pretty. I found no appreciable difference in visual quality between the Blu Ray and the DVD. What I have to discuss is the choice of voice options. There are three English dubbed, French original, and French with subtitles. My strong recommendation is French WITHOUT subtitles...even for younger children. Why so? The English version is spoken by untalented actors like most dubbed films. And the subtitles for the French version interfere with the visuals. This leaves only the French stand alone option. Lest one think this is unacceptable...the stories are simple enough to understand in a foreign language with the help of the animation...and the French is spoken beautifully. After all, when I was young, I went to the opera and listened to the music without worrying so much about plot. Michel Ocelot as an inventor of stunning cartoons is all about the VISUALS as no animator has ever reproduced the kind of bold color designs he delights in.

Recommended, yes...but oddly enough, this movie does not even come close to the first full length animation film ever made. That movie (almost 90 years old) is a must see it's titled "The Adventures of Prince Achmed." Both use clever silhouettes against multi-colored backgrounds. But the imperfections of the cut-outs in the older film give it a greater earthiness.

While I know that the French animated import "Tales of the Night" is marketed toward a younger audience, I think that a slightly older crowd is more likely to appreciate the film's simpler charms. Director Michel Ocelot has mastered a shadow play style of animation that gives this film a distinctly unique feel compared to more frantic entries of the day. The film is comprised of six short stories, each with a specific color palette over which the shadow figures enact the drama of the tale. The stories themselves don't always break new ground thematically, but they have pleasing moral centers and positive messages. The approach, however, might appear somewhat subdued to kids reared on quick-cut editing, manic energy, and blaring soundtracks. It is a more mature audience, therefore, who will probably connect with the leisurely vibe and the visual beauty of the piece. The film is gorgeous to look at, with the Blu-ray really allowing the contrast of colors to pop!

The six tales are connected by a trio of narrators who are dreaming up different stories they wish to tell. As they decide on a new plot, this serves as an introduction as they star in their latest creations. The stories often have a historical or cultural basis and each new setting is distinguished by the vibrant colors used in the background. These are the tales:

1) The Werewolf

2) Ti Jean and the Belle-Sans-Connaitre

3) The Chosen One And The City Of Gold

4) Boy Tam-Tam

5) The Boy Who Never Lied

6) The Doe-Girl And The Architect's Son

The release also has a number of interesting Bonus Features, especially if you are as enchanted by Ocelot's visual style as I am. There is an interview with Ocelot and a featurette entitled "The Festival of Color: Storytelling Through Animation." If you enjoy the film's animation, it's great to get the artist's take on the material as well. This being a French film, there is the option to watch it with subtitles as it was originally released. This, however, might be a hard sell for kids. But while I abhor dubbing of any kind, the English language version actually works quite well. Overall, I'd say that "Tales of the Night" would merit five stars for its visual splendor rendered so simply yet powerfully. The look of the picture, however, is more dynamic than some of the stories. Pleasant enough, they don't provide many surprises. Five stars for look, four stars for storytelling, I was surprised by how much I liked this one. I'm just not certain of its audience and which ages might respond best to the film's stylistic maturity despite its more youthful themes. KGHarris, 1/13.

I really liked Django Unchained, or as I like to call it: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence right through the eyeball and then the bullet continued through about 7 other torsos, shot out from a guy's belly button bringing a plume of intestines with it, ricocheted off someone's jugular vein, then snapped the cord holding up a chandelier causing said chandelier to plummet like a lead balloon, crushing the skulls of various evil varmints and polecats and then plunging into an occupied outhouse where the dynamite was also stored, causing the outhouse to explode in a crimson rain of blood, guts and offal.

But I guess all that wouldn't fit on the poster.

Django has everything you'd want in a movie, action, humor, suspense, drama, and even some romance, all washed down with gallons of blood. Did I mention some beautiful western vistas? it's got those too. And there are plenty of refernces to some of the geat westerns of the past, some of them only visual so pay attention. There is the trade mark Tarantino dialogue as well.

I'm sure other reviewers will talk about racial-political implications and social commentary and such. I'm not that smart. I just thought this was a fast paced and satisfying film for movie fans from beginning to end. Leonardo Di Caprio makes for a great villain, keeping himself just this side of over-the-top. Jamie Fox played Django as quiet waters that ran deep but Christopher Walz steals the show, although Samuel L. Jackson almost beat him to it.

Yes it's violent and bloody, and yes, the "n" word is used liberally throughout the movie, but it's a Tarantino film taking place in pre-Civil War South for pete's sake. What would you expect?

All three leading actors were amazing. Fox & Waltz were insanely good. Beautifly shot and a compelling story that I was never quite sure how all would be resolved (other than knowing a bunch a folks were gonna die).

In honor of Roger Ebert, I give it two thumbs up. R.I.P. Mr. Ebert.

Best Deals for Django Unchained (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2011)

As an avid fan of Quentin Tarantino, there's a level of quality that I expect from each film that he makes. I expect to connect with his characters, but not necessarily like any of them. I expect to see a film that satisfies the film geek in me. More than anything, I expect to see a film that entertains throughout the prerequisite bloated running time.

"Django Unchained" is nearly three hours long. But it never feels that long, it entertains and surprises every step along the way. When I first checked my watch, we were already two hours into the film. All of Tarantino's films are usually about this long. Tarantino has been having fun with fictionalizing historical periods lately. This started with 2009's "Inglourious Basterds", which was easily one of the best films of that year. My eighty-something year old grandmother, who lived through the time that the film depicted World War II said that if events actually happened as they did in that film, that we would be living in a better world today. I think that's a pretty high compliment, especially since my grandmother is not Tarantino's target audience. He was able to design a great story not an idealistic view of that time period, but still a pretty fascinating one.

"Django" is about slavery...a taboo subject in any film, a strangely popular one, recently, as the same time period is explored in "Lincoln". It's about Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave who is bought and then freed by Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, one-upping himself from the fantastic performance he gave in "Basterds"), a dentist turned bounty hunter. White supremacist slave owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) bought and enslaved his wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), and Django and Schultz are out to correct the grave injustice done to both of them, and this doesn't mean just capturing and killing Candie, but many others who are responsible for the trauma experienced by Broomhilda.

Christoph Waltz has got to be one of the finest living actors in Hollywood. He's incredibly charismatic, but he cares about his character, first and foremost. As the prime antagonist in "Basterds", he was positively horrifying. In this film, he's the hero, but at the same time, he's anything but that. He brings humor and depth to a character that wouldn't have worked this well otherwise. Jamie Foxx does a good job as well, but I don't necessarily see him winning anything this Oscar season.

I'm half-tempted to call "Django" Quentin Tarantino's superhero movie. Django is by no means that, he's an oppressed figure with no real "super powers", however he's a kick-ass guy who the audience roots for from the very beginning. He even has his own theme song! We don't know how he appears to be more literate than other slaves, and he is somehow always able to outsmart those around him.

"Django" shows Tarantino having slightly more respect for genre than he ever has. It's a western revenge epic, first and foremost. It's also kind of a comedy, with some of the most clever dialogue I've heard in a film in 2012. It's also a romance, displaying the forbidden love between Django and his wife. But it's first and foremost a western, and Tarantino sticks to that.

This film isn't perfect, however. One thing I expect from Tarantino is well-developed strong female characters. We don't have that in "Django". I was hoping that Kerry Washington, who is also badass protagonist Olivia Pope in ABC's "Scandal", would be smart and strong-willed enough to get herself out of the problems which are out of her hands. I was hoping for Tarantino to give her some snappy dialogue, to show that her character is, like Django, superior to all of the other slaves around her. She isn't. She just kind of stands there and whimpers. She's helpless, and I wasn't expecting that from Tarantino, who has written some of the best female protagonists in film.

Other than this, "Django Unchained" is a masterful film. It takes alot for a nearly three hour long film to be engaging the entire way through, and it is. It's wickedly funny, and at the same time, extremely dramatic. With its graphic violence and filthy mouth, it isn't for the faint of heart. All of the actors here, especially DiCaprio, seem to be having tons of fun here, and it shows. Tarantino loves to fictionalize history, and if such films are as good as "Django Unchained", I think he should keep doing it. It's a vision of history that only Tarantino can bring us.

Grade: A-

Honest reviews on Django Unchained (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2011)

Django Unchained started out great and ended up okay, but somewhere in the middle, it fell a little too in love with itself and the pacing slowed to a crawl. Django is freed and then starts to work with a German bounty hunter, who is a wonderful character. When they go to Candie Land, a plantation where Django's wife is being kept, that's where the movie just fell apart for me. Leo DiCaprio is Candie, and he turns in a good performance, but there's a lot of repetitive dialogue and plodding revelations. Django allows a slave to be torn apart by dogs, which made him an unsympathetic character, whereas before that moment, he was pretty cool. Yes, there's a lot of blood lots of juicy gun fights. Some of it is way over the top, but that's what you expect out of a Tarantino film, so I have no objection to that. The movie is very long and would have been much better about half an hour shorter, but if felt as if Tarantino lost his way and was trying hard to insert tension in the middle, and for me, it just didn't work.

Django Unchained is almost three hours long but it flew by. What a great movie! Full disclosure: I'm a 57 year old baseball mom whose husband and two sons love Quentin Tarantino, but his movies always made me scratch my head, cover my eyes, and eventually just leave the room. Not "Django Unchained." I love Westerns, I love Jamie Foxx, I love movies about justice and might for right, I hate racism and the abomination that was slavery...this movie has all of that and much, much more.

For women (and men) who might be afraid of the violence...there is a lot, but I covered my eyes in a few places, and when blood spurts, it is often almost cartoonish, geyser gusher spurts of ketchup-red liquid like from a fountain, and sometimes when people get shot, they get jerked up and back, almost like a Peter Pan type harness is on them. It's not pretty, but it is campy, not realism like in "Saving Private Ryan." The worst violence in the movie is the most realistic kind: when slaves are beaten and abused, that is hard to watch. As it should be.

Recommendation: Oh absolutely, two very enthusiastic--and very surprised!--thumbs up here. Bravo, bravo!

Let's be clear that "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" is an action movie based on a comic book and a toy action figure. It features virtually non-stop action, some terrific special effects, and a comic book plot. This is not "Patton" or "The Ten Commandments" or even "Die Hard." It is a fun, no-brainer movie in which the good guys eventually win and the bad guys eventually lose, but some of the bad guys escape to set up the next movie.

As the movie opens, the GI Joes, an elite American special operations combat unit, are in action, securing some loose Pakistani nuclear weapons from insurgents in a superb action sequence inside a military facility. However, the Joes are framed by the President, who is really an impersonator planted by the terrorist organization Cobra. The fake President sends a military strike after the Joes, wiping out the unit. The Cobra organization liberates its imprisoned leader and executes its clever plan to take over the world.

Fortunately, three of the Joes survive the ambush in Pakistan. Led by Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, they go underground, figure out the frame-up, and make contact with two key people: the ninja warrior Snake Eyes and a retired Joe, General Coulton. Together, they will put together a plan to ambush Cobra at a nuclear weapons summit at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, of all places.

The action sequences are quite good, including shoot-em-ups in Pakistan and at Fort Sumter, and a fantastic ninja sequence on a cliff in some remote and unnamed mountain range. Bruce Willis has an excellent extended cameo as General Coulton, while Jonathan Pryce enthusiastically chews the scenery as a real and fake president.

"G.I. Joe", underneath all the high tech weapons, martial arts, and special effects, is a good old-fashioned action movie. Park your brain and enjoy the ride.

This 3D review is intended for those with 3DTVs and/or fans of 3D.

GI Joe Retaliation was originally meant to be released during summer 2012, but was delayed till March 29, 2013 to be converted into 3D. So did they have enough time to make the 3D worth our time and frustration (of GI Joe fans) having to wait even longer to see the movie in theaters?

Absolutely. The 3D is very powerfully rendered in GI Joe Retaliation. This is not a half baked 3D effort as many of the earlier, hurried 3D conversions of films like Clash of the Titans' poor 3D. The 3D here offers unexpectedly outstanding dimension and depth in many of the cool action scenes, coupled with a generous amount of pop outs. It's been said the Snake Eyes scene was noteworthy (with Snake Eyes portrayed on the Blu Ray 3D cover), and indeed it is as the 3D gives that scene depth the likes of which are rarely seen in conversions. Thankfully the rest of the movie holds up well in 3D.

3D Overall: 9/10

3D Dimension: 9/10

3D Pop Out: 8/10

3D Depth: 9/10

As someone who grew up with the cartoon & comics there is plenty to say about the film versions, 2009's "Rise of Cobra" did get some things right, casting Rachel Nichols as "Scarlett" & Sienna Miller as "Baroness" was right on target, as was Ray Park as "Snake Eyes", (see review from 2009) this new film is about the same but suffers some inconsistencies as well, things they got right...."Duke"(Channing Tatum) & "Roadblock's" (The Rock) freindship is on par with the comics, & The Rock definately looks the part no doubt, as with the first film, "Snake Eyes" & "Storm Shadow's" connection is explored once more, "Zartan" impersonating the President, & yes, this time they get Cobra Commander right!... "Firefly" is portrayed accurately,.... things they got wrong....killing off Duke (was pushed back 9 months so Tatum could get more screen time, what screen time???)...never happened in the comics, "Cobra Commander" & "Storm Shadow" leaving "Destro" to die,(what??)....no explanation as to what happened to "Baroness, Scarlett, Breaker, Ripcord, & Hawk" from the first film, Paramount was too cheap to bring back Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, & Dennis Quaid, but not explaining their fates was even cheaper!!, a line of dialogue would have been nice, but noooooo!!!...we are left to wonder, Sienna Miller in 2009 said she was paid to appear in three "G.I.Joe" films as Baroness, I guess she got a free paycheck for not appearing here, this is what happens when you put idiots in charge of a franchise like this, there are however some high points to this one that I will point out, Adrianne Palecki as "Lady J", simply beautiful, so much so that I am willing to forgive Paramount for depriving me of Rachel Nichols as Scarlett, the mountain top fight sequence involving Snake Eyes & Jinx vs Storm Shadow's guards has to be seen to be believed, a simply breath taking action sequence, the action set pieces are more this time around, the world leader's summitt meeting is to close to a terrifying reality when the president (Zartan) launches all of the U.S. nukes, forcing the other world leaders to do the same, all in an attempt to disarm the world & take control, all orchestrated by Cobra Commander, this kind of thing was always hinted at in the comics & cartoon, Bruce Willis appearing as the original Joe from the 60's toy line was fun, talk about a guy packing heat, the hiding places in his home is a home invader's worst nightmare, & Willis hams it up no doubt, all in all this one is more of the same, like the first film it is hit & miss, as I stated in my review of that one, you shouldn't go in with high expectations, or expecting Paramount to have learned anything from the first film's mixed reaction, but if you want some cool action/fight scenes, then this is your film, & Adrianne Palecki will definately keep you watching no matter what.

Galapagos 3D, Africa 3D, Amazon 3D, Papua 3D. All, apparently, by the same company; they are all horrible. Stultifyingly boring video (although with nice 3D, especially the underwater footage in this title) together with bad narration and music. Kind of like the video equivalent of ambient music (and I don't mean Brian Eno; I mean Muzak). Good for insomnia. NOT like a BBC production (e.g. Life, Planet Earth; THOSE should be released in 3D, but alas they were not shot with 3D cameras). Very low budget/ rushed feel to it. I gave an extra star for the price, but if you're expecting a quality, informative nature video then you will be disappointed.

This movie is about a SEAL named Andres, and while the cinematography is really crisp, I get tired of the Spin Doctors music throughout the whole movie..."Look around your world pretty baby, is it everything you hoped it would be, the wrong guy, the wrong situation, the right time to ROOOOLLLLL to me....to ROLLLLLLL to me."

That song plays about 8 times throughout the movie. There is a dramatic shift at the end of the movie, where one of Andre's friend SEALs (or maybe it was Andre) gets harpooned by a man and woman. The Spin Doctors play again, and the song "Two Princes" plays, and it's like, "If you...want to call me baby, now go ahead, and if you...want to buy me flowers, now go ahead..." and the man apologizes to the woman for philandering, and the two begin kissing in the now-red water, fresh with SEAL blood. You realize that these two are actually vampires, and that Galapagos is actually a documentary mixed with the prequel for Blade.

The SEALs do have some cool gear, and they do talk about how Andre and his fellow SEALs whacked bin Laden, but that's not a major part of the movie. What is a major part of the movie are interviews with the heads of the EPA, HUD, and Homeland Security discussing the serious issue of STDs in Urban housing areas. This was a great message, but a little graphic for children.

Before I purchased this movie, I read a number of critic reviews and found them to be extremely mixed. Many critics liked the film; many disliked it. All called it derivative.

I can't say I agree. I really enjoyed this little creeper of a film! It may not be the best horror film in the whole wild world, but it certainly scared the crap out of me and my girlfriend. That's not bad for a PG-13 movie!

The story goes that a father goes on a murderous rampage, then kills his estranged wife and naps his two daughters. He drives off at crazy speeds and spins off the road. Surviving the accident, he wanders with his daughters through a cold, isolated woods until he discovers a seemingly unused cabin.

Flash forward five years. The kids' uncle has been looking for them all these years, and his investigators find them still living in the cabin; daddy is nowhere to be found. How the heck did those two little feral girls survive all that time on their own?

Or WERE they on their own?

This movie wasn't exactly subtle. It wasn't as if I couldn't foresee many of the plot twists, but it still scared the snot out of me. No tiny feat that! It reminds me of that other little horror gem Darkness Falls. Not a big movie. Not a perfect movie. But a damned good movie.

I highly recommend this flawed but thrilling film!

Good acting, a monster that I don't see too little, good effects (even if it is all just CGI) and a story I can swallow...we have a winner! This movie is nothing epic nor did it have the best scares I've seen in a while, but it's a horror movie that "works."

First time feature director Andrés Muschietti (writer/director of the short film Mamá) does a solid job with atmosphere and "creepy." The story gets moving when two orphaned girls are discovered in an abandoned cabin in the woods after five years somehow surviving on their own (now they're about 9 and 7 years old-ish). Their eyes are cold and scared yet somehow predatory, their hair and skin far beyond wildly filthy, and their movement is so unnatural that it reminds me more of a Silent Hill monster than an animal. More disturbing was the degeneration of their oral skills with the exception of whispering "mama."

Much to my surprise, the maternal poltergeist Mama was not a kept mystery. Mama, her appearance, what she's capable of and her relationship with the girls are all presented to us right away. So when the feral Victoria (Megan Charpentier; Resident Evil: Retribution, Red Riding Hood, Jennifer's Body) and Lilly are taken in by uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain), the movie doesn't rely on us wondering when Mama will pop up and reign terror on the new foster parents. Instead we watch the girls maintain a secret relationship with Mama while remaining emotionally distant from Lucas and Annabel.

But once their child psychologist and the new parents catch on to Mama's presence, simply a psychological manifestation or even a home invader by their perception, Mama feels threatened. And once the girls begin to open up to the doctor or feel affection for their new parents, Mama gets pissed! So we find ourselves not only nervous when we're "normally" nervous in these movies (e.g., walking in dark halls, opening the ajar closet door, looking over your shoulder to see what the girls are looking at), but we're also nervous when things wouldn't normally be unnerving...like when we see Annabel desperately hugging a thrashing Lilly, who starts to find the embrace comforting...I wonder if Mama is watching.

What's interesting is how this movie has such a simple story with one simple revelation toward its end, no red herrings and no real surprises--yet, it really works. I thought they had some trouble making the finale at the end come together, actually I thought it was too drawn out and a bit weak, but overall I was VERY pleased with this movie.

We start out feeling edgy about the girls, and as they normalize we start feeling edgy about Mama (Javier Botet; creature actor of all three [REC] films). And Mama is worth feeling edgy about. She looks quite contorted, distorted and disturbing, moves like a bipedal yet quadriplegic demon on meth, and manifests an aura of decay. I felt effectively continuously worried about what this apparition was going to do next, and the pace of the movie never disappoints.

I feel like we've been trained to find piss poor acting to be totally acceptable when it comes to horror. But Mama's cast features nothing but competency and a few pleasant surprises. Of course, no one should be shocked that Jessica Chastain pulled off the stand-offish girlfriend turned hesitant parent. But what about young Megan Charpentier? As the reserved older sister Victoria and her stone cold portrayal of The Red Queen in the latest Resident Evil installment she has all the makings of both one of the youngest Scream Queens ever, but also a talented young actress!

This movie was a pleasure with good characters, a monster that I don't see too little, good effects (even if it is all just CGI) and a story I can swallow. I look forward to watching this with an easily scared date on my couch in the dark. ;)

Best Deals for Mama (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2013)

Mama is a good semi-creepy horror movie about two young children who spend five years alone in the woods and are later found and adopted by their uncle (the Kingslayer actor from Game of Thrones) and his wife (the always great Jessica Chastain in full goth mode, trading in her trademark red hair for black and sporting tattoos). Of course, something the children call "Mama" comes home with them and thus the horror begins. Maybe a little too much CGI used, but most of it looked okay. All in all, this is a well made ghost story that packs a few scares and has good acting throughout.

Honest reviews on Mama (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2013)

I'm a unique horror movie watcher: I'm utterly terrified/disgusted by gore and gratuitous violence, but I don't mind a good dose of morbidity and twisted metal states. This movie was a perfect balance because it had the quick cuts and jumps to get you gasping, but there was no gore or useless chainsaws. The story was morbid but plausible (who doesn't love a 19th century insane asylum ghost?) and the added unsettling concept of two little girls being raised in the words for five years without human contact, and how twisted that simply makes them, ghost aside, was great.

Good acting, great combination of jumping scares and a legitimately terrifying ghost in Mama; she was just my sort of horrifying: tattered shroud, distorted features, HAUNTED eyes, nightmarish voice. I'd suggest you watch this in a heartbeat. Definitely a nice surprise after a lot of mediocre horror flicks.

You might be wondering what acclaimed actress Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty") is doing in a goofy-named horror flick. She's actually in good company with award winning stars like Nicole Kidman ("The Others") and Naomi Watts ("The Ring" 1 & 2) to name a couple. Here Chastain plays Annabel, a Suzi Quatro-like bassist in a punk rock band, complete with short dark hair and tatted up arms. She is the main squeeze of Lucas, a starving artist type played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, perhaps best known as the incestuous prince on "Game of Thrones."

The story begins with the twin brother of Lucas going on a killing rampage that includes fellow workers and his wife. He takes his 2 young daughters out into the country with similar intent. Before he can commit the deed a mysterious apparition intervenes. Five years later Lucas is still trying to find out what happened to his brother and nieces.

Ultimately found, the girls have somehow managed to survive but are little more than wild animals. Director Andres Muschietti manages to provide enough suspense to keep viewers on the edge on their seats using quick cuts and lighting. At the same time, he also resorts to the usual "gotcha" moments complete with a jolting sound effect.

Annabel is the main focus in the story however as the girlfriend who reluctantly has to take over child care duties after Lucas is hospitalized thanks to an induced fall down a flight of stairs. Chastain is excellent in the role and proves her dramatic range. "Mama" is an above average horror film that relies on suspense rather than gore for chilling effects. For me the ghostly presence's transformation to a CGI manifestation in the final act was unnecessary and changes the tone of the film somewhat. Still this is a pretty scary ghost story and worth a look.

Las Vegas 3D

I am a fan of everything Las Vegas, so I was really excited about getting this dvd. I was disappointed when I put it in the blu ray player and saw what a disaster it was.

While the dvd does offer some decent footage of Las Vegas hotels and recognizable spots, the English audio narration is beyond dreadful. Besides sounding like it was recorded at the bottom of a deep, dark well, the "actor" narrating the video was filmed in what appears to be cheaply shot home video format. In sharp contrast, the footage of Vegas itself is clear and professional looking.

The English language narration is truly dreadful beyond belief the actor mispronounces every other word ("Sigmon & Roy" instead of "Sigfried and Roy", and he could not even pronounce the word "facade" correctly). This fiasco was produced in Germany but the worst thing about the choice of English narrator is that he is obviously an American (they could not find anyone else in the entire county of Germany who knew how to speak proper, enunciated English?) how could they hire someone who is completely inarticulate and unable to correctly pronounce important words? It was laughably bad. He looked as if he was reading off a teleprompter the entire time and inserted annoying little chuckles in inappropriate places in the script (presumably in a failed attempt to add personality to the reading.)

Some of the flat, bad delivery could be forgiveable if the narration was not plain BORING. It was like watching paint dry. And there were many points where the volume on the narration went super low as the scene changed and what the actor was saying became jumbled and nearly inaudible. As I said in the title, a mess.

The only way I could ever recommend this to anyone with a clear conscience is ONLY if you are a super die-hard fan of Las Vegas and just want to see 40 minutes of familiar footage as a fix between trips (yes this dvd is only 40 minutes long, not 80 like the description says here on Amazon). But do yourself a huge favor and turn the sound off completely and just play your own seelction of favorite Vegas-style songs as you watch the footage. Anything is better than the English "audio" that they have provided on this sad amateurishly produced product.

Wow. What a disaster this thing is. Worst DVD I have ever seen in my life. The best thing about it is the menu waiting for your choice of Play, Chapter, etc

I dont remember what my expectations were going in, but none of them were met. The entire DVD is a series of mediocre shots of the outsides of Las Vegas casinos, buildings, and street signs. If you walked around with a camcorder, stayed on the streets and sidewalks, and pointed the camera more or less randomly at whatever you came upon, you would have the bulk of this footage. They never even stepped inside a casino, the whole DVD is the outside of buildings. In a couple of cases, leaves hanging from a nearby tree obscured the view of the hotel sign, so you didnt even know what you were looking at.

But the worst part is the narration. Some random guy who sounds like he's trapped in a tunnel of some kind reads from a teleprompter about the history and other Las Vegas tidbits. For some reason the director-if there was one-thought we should be treated to frequent shots of this unknown fellow. To break up the monotony, sometimes we are treated to shots of him from the side! Theres no reason to have to watch this guy in the first place. Not only is he no one in particular, but he does a poor job of reading/narrating. I could tolerate the strange mispronouncements. But the way he read was just too weird and annoying. He tried so hard to keep it from being done in a monotone that his intonations and emphasis are completely unnatural and difficult to listen to once you become aware of it.

I'm already tired of talking about it. There is no reason for anyone to ever buy this DVD, with the possible exception of family members of the producers or the random black guy they pulled off the street to narrate. Its awful, just awful.

Half the blu Ray is footage of Las Vegas hotels and recognizable spots, the other half is the narrator which is so dreadful. Looks like you could see better video on youtube. The recording is so bad, I had to lower the volume to zero. For one thing, the blu ray was mailed out late to get this piece of trash. This is my first review on any kind of video. its to bad, no review was available when it first came out. Also the music back ground is all jungle music. $15.00 wasted.

I have never been a hardcore sci-fi fan but this movie definitely has a nice light scifi feel to it.

This movie has a similar feel to District 9 but with a bigger budget and more star power. Money and actors are definitely not the way to an instant classic but it definitely helps in this case, especially when the star power is Matt Damon.

This is the kind if movie that gives me hope that I can enjoy the sci fi genre. It feels to me that scifi rarely gets the Hollywood treatment, and when it does it is full of cliches and melodrama. I am happy to say that this movie is an exception.

What I really appreciated with this movie was that many scenes could have easily gone a certain way but instead the movie makes a slight tweak to liven things up. Even the gun battle sequences seemed to have something fresh to them.

If I had to choose I would still watch district 9 first but this movie was still fantastic. I think that if you are looking at this page because you enjoyed the creators first film then this movie is worth giving a try.

One thing to keep in mind though is that there is a strong political message in this movie. This seems to really enrage people. I understand the placement of the message though it does feel forced and heavy handed. If this kind of thing isn't something you can brush off than maybe you should stay away.

Not quite 5-stars but it's ambitious, fast, thrilling and at times fantastic.

The visuals deliver the goods, just amazing, with a tip of the hat to the gritty look and feel of District 9. Also, and this is key, the fight and action scenes are intense and immersive. You feel like you are in them as you watch.

The plot is the classic Hollywood story split, and suspension of disbelief is a must to get the full ride from this movie. Part of the story takes place on Elysium , a highly secure, space habitat for the rich and wealthy. The other part of the story takes place on a wild and hairy 2154 Earth A.D. These stories evolve on their own and then merge to get the sparks flying.

The acting is solid as you would expect. Everyone gives pretty tight performances that help make the movie that much more entertaining.

In all, good sci-fi entertainment, that does what good sci-fi does: use the future to make you think about the present. It's a solid follow-up to District 9 for this director.

And also, whatever your political beliefs are, set them aside and enjoy. The Day the Earth Stood Still, Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, A Clockwork Orange, Starship Troopers all posed a possible future based on the filmmaker's imagination. I didn't have to agree or disagree to enjoy them. I enjoyed them because they were great stories, great movies.

I look forward to more.

Enjoy!

Best Deals for Elysium (Two Disc Combo: Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

The biggest problem with Elysium is that despite its stunning visuals, it still ends up being a formula-driven, dull, and unimaginative film.

Characters on both sides of the good v. evil spectrum are two-dimensional and exaggerated; we are asked to believe that wealthy people are Nazi-like for no other reason than simply being in the top 1% of the economic scale. The poor, by contrast, are righteous and fighting for a better world. There is no middle ground, and as a result, no plausible or believable people populate this cookie-cutter world.

The movie is also plagued by overused and ineffectual story-telling techniques. We have the usual little kid, in this case a girl, who is in dire need of medical attention, always on the brink of death but never actually in any danger at all. Also present is the ever-overacted computer hacker, whose criminal exterior belies his more noble character, and whose skills at reading and manipulating computer code defy even movie logic one small glance at millions of lines of hex, and he immediately discerns it's a rebooting program to reset the entire space habitat known as Elysium.

Half way through the film, we know how everything will turn out; we know who will live and who will die; we know how the "good" guys will defeat the "bad" guys, and saddest of all, we still have to sit through another 45 minutes of pointless action to arrive at the predictable conclusion.

In the end, Elysium feels like a poorly-written sermon on the evils of wealth, with all the extreme simplification of political parties and not a shred of cleverness to at least make it entertaining.

Honest reviews on Elysium (Two Disc Combo: Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

This movie is beautifully shot with potential for a great, deeper storyline. But it falls flat into the typical sci-fi action thriller. Disappointing that the movie was not even 2 hours as I felt more history and storyline could have been developed. Jodi Foster's character for sure was slighted on development. So much potential wasted. Rent do not buy!

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Elysium (Two Disc Combo: Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

Elysium is the name of an orbiting satellite. It has a controlled environment and is where the rich and powerful live. The United States has been reduced to a land of illegals in an extension of class warfare. Health care is different for the rich than the poor. The "illegals" attempt to go to Elysium to get health care. The film also is an extension of surveillance drones, automated robots, and how computers run the world.

In an unusual role Jodi Foster plays Delacourt, the emotionless Secretary of Defense who protects Elysium. At times she is similar to Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" and really needed to be more like him. It was not a good role for her. Matt Damon plays Max in his usual man against the system. After an industrial accident, Max has 5 days to live and opts to join the resistance against the powers of Elysium.

I have not read the book, but you can tell from the film that the book was better as there are massive parallels to today's society which most likely the film couldn't incorporate them all. Yet at the same time, I felt a bit bogged down by the overtness of this morality film.

Good looking graphics. Good ending. Fair plot. Dialogue needed to be lighter. Politically to the left.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity.
