Galapagos 3D, Africa 3D, Amazon 3D, Papua 3D. All, apparently, by the same company; they are all horrible. Stultifyingly boring video (although with nice 3D, especially the underwater footage in this title) together with bad narration and music. Kind of like the video equivalent of ambient music (and I don't mean Brian Eno; I mean Muzak). Good for insomnia. NOT like a BBC production (e.g. Life, Planet Earth; THOSE should be released in 3D, but alas they were not shot with 3D cameras). Very low budget/ rushed feel to it. I gave an extra star for the price, but if you're expecting a quality, informative nature video then you will be disappointed.

It was a relaxing movie to watch. There could have been a greater exploration of sea life in it. It was a little repetitive. The thing going for it was the photography and the 3 D effect.

This movie is about a SEAL named Andres, and while the cinematography is really crisp, I get tired of the Spin Doctors music throughout the whole movie..."Look around your world pretty baby, is it everything you hoped it would be, the wrong guy, the wrong situation, the right time to ROOOOLLLLL to me....to ROLLLLLLL to me."

That song plays about 8 times throughout the movie. There is a dramatic shift at the end of the movie, where one of Andre's friend SEALs (or maybe it was Andre) gets harpooned by a man and woman. The Spin Doctors play again, and the song "Two Princes" plays, and it's like, "If you...want to call me baby, now go ahead, and if you...want to buy me flowers, now go ahead..." and the man apologizes to the woman for philandering, and the two begin kissing in the now-red water, fresh with SEAL blood. You realize that these two are actually vampires, and that Galapagos is actually a documentary mixed with the prequel for Blade.

The SEALs do have some cool gear, and they do talk about how Andre and his fellow SEALs whacked bin Laden, but that's not a major part of the movie. What is a major part of the movie are interviews with the heads of the EPA, HUD, and Homeland Security discussing the serious issue of STDs in Urban housing areas. This was a great message, but a little graphic for children.

Dinosaurs are everyone's favorite fossils. All kids seem to know about them in one way or another. There's "Jurassic Park" and other movies. There's Barney. All major natural history museums have exhibits. Dinosaurs are many states' "official fossil" and on and on. Well, why not? Even though they constitute only a small portion of the total Mesozoic fauna, they're generally large and spectacular and grab the imagination like no other fossil group. The Mesozoic Era was a glorious time for the reptiles and not just the Dinosaurs. The Mesozoic oceans had an assemblage of large marine reptiles that were just as remarkable in their habitats as the Dinosaurs were on land. Giant marine turtles, Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs of great variety and ferocious Mosasaurs, in addition to some pretty gigantic sharks and other fish, roamed the Mesozoic seaways. "Sea Monsters: A prehistoric Adventure" is a film put together to depict the marine fauna of this time span.

"Sea Monsters" weaves multiple lines of information together. First, there's the group of paleontologists who are collecting and curateing the fossils. Second are the nature and animated recreations of the fossils themselves. Third is a little story that the fossils supposedly reveal regarding some small short-necked plesiosaurs referred to as dollies (a mother and two siblings) who venture out into the mean Cretaceous sea about 82 million years ago. Finally, the movie gives an interesting and spectacular viewing of the geologic history of the seaway, both in map and perspective views. Would the average viewer (especially kids) comprehend and appreciate the complexly interwoven story? Probably not. However, they well might enjoy many facets of the film especially some spectacular animated versions of the Mesozoic marine creatures. A person well versed in natural history might view the film in an entirely different way and find it to be very interesting and well done. The DVD could be repeatedly viewed, especially by children. As their knowledge grew, probably their understanding and appreciation would also grow. Same for adults. The film has good educational potential. Personally, my favorite portion of the film would be the animations. It was delightful to view creatures that I've read about in spectacular live versions.

I should probably issue a disclosure at this point. I served as a scientific consultant to this film and I'm listed in the closing credits. I received no remuneration or expenses and have no financial tie-ins with the filming company or The National Geographic Society, and none was expected. My interest was in the fossils and the story they were telling and I'm delighted with the final results. I viewed the film at the Rueben Fleet IMAX Theater with Director Sean Phillips and others and greatly enjoyed the evening. The DVD could not possibly be as spectacular as my viewing, but I have full confidence that the DVD version will show well on a wide-screen TV.

The special effects were amazing, a lot of information was given, wonderful narration, and the storyline was interesting.

However, I can't bring myself to give more than three stars because the staged paleontologist scenes were too cheesy for me...I don't know if better actors would have made a difference. Just when we were getting into the scenes with the prehistoric creatures, it would cut away to a reacreation of how the fossils were found it was very distracting.

I think maybe they should have separated those scenes from the main storyline, and offered the fossil information as a special feature for the DVD.

If you prefer the set-up of DVDs such as Chased By Sea Monsters or When Dinosaurs Roamed America, you might have the same problem trying to sit through this DVD.

We bought this DVd for our three-year old son who is fascinated with prehistoric sea monsters...he loves the parts featuring the creatures, but kept wandering off whenever they cut to the staged "people" scenes. That kind of defeated the purpose of buying this DVD.

I was dissappointed with this documentary. It opens showing a landscape and then 3 people in an SUV identified as paleontologists who don't appear again in the film until the very end. They don't do anything but talk among themselves about what they are looking for which doesn't add anything to the documentary. It is never clearly stated who they are and who they represent. The film also shows other paleontologists who do a little more talking, but still who they represent remains a mystery. A great deal of time is spent on dazzleling the viewer with the special effects and a story about the adventures of two sea dynosaurs (doli...?). The narration left much to be desired and the music was poorly chosen. This film was designed it seems mostly for kids. You learn very little from this.

I consider National Geographic to be one of the best makers of nature documentaries, but this one is the worst documentary or supposed documentary I've ever seen from them.

Strangely, this DVD did not play in my DVD player but did play on my computer's DVD drive.

Definitely the best-to-date film on prehistoric sea-life I've seen. It follows the life story of a little-known sea creature called Dolichorhynchops (a.k.a. Doli) and the creatures she encounters in the then submerged center of America.

The graphics of "Prehistoric Adventure" don't quite match that of "Chased by Sea Monsters,"

BUT the story-line is much more engaging. The "Adventure" jumps seamlessly between Doli's story and the paleontologists unraveling her story.

"Adventure" makes breaks in the storyline to talk ancient beasties like Tylosaurus, Xiphactinus, the Ammonites, etc. as they most likely lived rather than having Nigel Marvin introducing their names before hurriedly moving on like in "Chased."

For example, watching the Astixosaurus swimming thru that school of fish like modern sharks, dolphins, and whales do almost convinced me these things are really out there.

Hope National Geographic puts out more like this. This is definitely worth your money, the kids will love it and you will 2.

I normally do not post reviews but in this case I felt compelled to. The folks that I purchased this DVD from have been great; they exchanged the defective DVD with another defective DVD (both were new and factory sealed). Both had blank or bad spots in the same places, therefore I have come to the conclusion that this is just a bad reproduction. The move is not all that good and the animation parts are where most of the defects are located. Save your money and purchase a better "prehistoric monster" move such as "the walking with" series.

Grand Canyon Adventure is both entertaining and awareness raising with great 3D effects. Dinosaurs Alive is a great documentary and the extras on how the movie was made is well worth your time. Wild Ocean has fantastic underwater shots that are especially compelling in 3D.

Tim Burton's directoral debut is so chock full of interesting bits and vision that a running commentary by Burton and creator/star Paul Reubens should have resulted in one of the best alternate tracks available on DVD. Unfortunately, their commentary becomes instead The Mutual Admiration Society, with long stories about how they came across each other, how great each thinks the other is, and who else was in the room when they met. Reubens and Burton spend too much time telling stories that ramble and don't go anywhere, and too little time commenting on the film itself.

When they DO manage to discuss the film, they are as interesting as you would expect, but these instances are few and far between. Burton for the most part sounds like he just woke up, and Reubens spends a lot of the film saying, "Uh-huh, yeah."

It's also rather appalling that Reubens can hardly bring himself to say the name of fellow screenwriter Phil Hartman (Reubens early on says "me and the other two guys who wrote the film...") -in fact, you won't hear him mention Hartman by name until the very end of the film when Hartman makes his cameo.

Some gentle prodding during the taping of this sequence would have produced something that I think more fans were looking for and expecting.

Like some other reviewers, I too couldn't find some of the knick-knacks promised in the pre-release. However, the one real prize on this disc is the alternate track isolating the music, with commentary by Danny Elfman. Elfman's insights into the film and its music are first-rate, and while I'm pleased Elfman does NOT talk over his music, it might have made it even more interesting had he discussed some of the nuances of his work while the tracks were playing.

The film quality on the DVD is top-notch, and the menu screens are clever (when you make a selection, Pee-wee goes speeding over to the new menu on his bike). The film itself is brilliant -no need on my part to give you a summary -and the widescreen format and new sound for this film alone would make the DVD worth owning. But with the exception of the Elfman alternative track, many of the first-rate extras viewers are coming to expect in these packages are, sadly, missing here.

Five stars for the film itself, but a low two for the extras, bringing this one to a soft three. Darn it.

This is one of the greatest films ever made. Not just comedies, but movies in general. Pee Wee Herman deserves to be remembered forever for this movie, because it was a stroke of pure genious. From Large Marge to Paris, Texas, this movie is a pure joy to watch that I cannot live without!

Paul Reubens does such an amazing job of playing an innocent child-like adult. His house is a kids dream house, and any grown-up who doesn't realize that place would be an absolute joy to live in doesn't deserve to be a grown-up! This movie is complete 80's nostalgia for me since I saw way too many times as a baby of the 80s. Oh yeah, and who can forget the pet-store scene! This movie rocks! That's right it does, it just completely rocks all!!!

Best Deals for Pee-wee's Big Adventure (2011)

I've always wanted this movie for home viewing, but I've realized that the previous versions released on DVD are not the best quality. I waited for years for a "deluxe edition" DVD or a Blu-ray version to be released. Turns out this Blu-ray version is very good quality.

Some of the cinematographic "errors" I remember from the original theatrical version were cropped out of previous DVD releases.

As a kid, I remember seeing Pee-Wee pulling the super-long chain out of the bike's storage compartment that would never fit in real life, but originally the film shot was composed in a way so you could see the long chain entering the compartment through an opening in the bottom. Like the DVD versions, this version DOES crop that shot so you can't see below the bike compartment where the extra chain is being fed.

On the other hand, in the scene where Pee-Wee is falling asleep driving at night where the road signs keep warning about twistier and twistier curves ahead, I remember seeing the dolly track for these signs in the bottom of the shots when I saw the movie in the '80s. Again, I noticed the DVD versions cropped this out or digitally erased the views of the track. This Blu-ray version actually left those "mistakes" in the shots of the signs. I was happy to see this, because I hate seeing movies altered from the way they were released. I'm a big fan of keeping movies original--mistakes or not.

I had no idea who Tim Burton was when I first saw this amazing movie back in '85, but I've been following his career since. And jaded as I was, when Large Marge sprouted that twisted, burning wreck of a face at me, I JUMPED, no lie. It takes talent to scare viewers like that. (Imagine what Burton would've done with GODZILLA, instead of those derivitive hacks) I'm not ashamed to admit that I've seen this gem countless times. Any of you future parents will want to get the DVD version so you can introduce your kids to this bizarre mix of fairy tale, horror, and dark comedy. They'll thank you for it, because Pee Wee is just the right antidote for all that hip-hop macho posturing out there in the streets and in the schools. Danny Elfman's score is incredibly hard to forget, and so is Francis Buxton, and even Amazing Larry! One of the best movies ever to be released in the 80s. (Despite the lag near the ending). I pity the fool that don't buy this video!

As a fan of Danny Elfman since his "Forbidden Zone" and Oingo Boingo days, I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting commentary Elfman provides between his compositions on the isolated audio track.

I, like many others, was very disappointed that not all of the originally-advertised extras were included on the DVD, but based on the overall quality of the released product, I still feel it earns "five stars".

I wish I had read a more critical review before purchasing this DVD, so here's mine:

Beautiful photography and wish I'd seen it in an IMAX theatre. As this is supposed to be a film about CORAL REEFS, however, you'd expect that alot of it would take place UNDERWATER..... It doesn't. .... Too much coverage of "human drama", with an islander's disappointment in the dying reef near his island, one of the diver's brush with the bends (but you know it will all be wrapped-up in a happy ending, right?), and photographers flying and boating around tropical islands. Personally, I had been looking for more photography and more real information on coral reefs --fascinating beautiful creatures with plenty of interesting drama on their own.

Soundtrack features great music, but the editing of which makes viewing the film quite annoying. You're listening carefully to Liam's relaxing voice and all-too-brief interesting commentary on the subject matter and then BOOM!, your hit with CSN at a volume that has you scrambling for the remote to turn it down three notches.

Overall, its a film that wants to be everything for all interests. Sure ! ...In 45 minutes?

I didn't know what to expect from this film that I saw at an IMAX Theater but I knew I had to see it. I'm a scuba diving enthusiast and I love coral reefs. Coral Reef Adventure is an eco tour of reefs and the dangers that exist for this delicate ecosystem. We follow Howard and Michele Hall, underwater photographers and authors, in their study of coral reefs to help Rusi Vulakoro, a diver in Fiji, to discover the cause of a dying reef.

Much of the underwater footage is from the Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, and French Polynesia. To say the images are breath taking is an understatement. Watching this film just re-enforced why I love to dive. I love the sea and all its wonder. At the end of the film a small child sitting in front of me told his parents that's what he wanted to do when he grows up, that is dive for a living. I love that so I told his parents about my dive club that teaches diving and has a program for children to play in to pool with dive equipment. There is nothing like seeing a wee one learning to dive.

As for the diving, it was exciting. The divers in this film are experienced professional divers and therefore they dive to depths all recreational divers should stay clear of. In the film you'll see depths of 350 and get a real feel for the wonder of scuba diving. Also, there was a guest appearance by Jean-Michele Cousteau; son of famed Jacque Cousteau, father of scuba diving. I also took a good look of the equipment that was used and was amazed at the use of re-breathers. I want a re-breather now.

Anyway, you'll see lots of coral, fish, manta rays, gray sharks, drift diving, incredible depths, and beautiful scenery. The film was incredibly educational and made me think of all the adventure I am missing. This is another film to spark your wonder lust for adventure and instill a respect for nature.

Best Deals for IMAX Coral Reef Adventure (2003)

As a half-century scuba diver who has been diving Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, Moorea and Tiputa Pass in Rangiroa over the years, I can vouch for the authenticity and genuine beauty of this splendid documentary, as well as for the unfortunate reality of the threats to these areas. In particular, we have been diving Fiji's Bligh Waters for years, most often with Rusi Vulakoro (also an excellent singer) who appears prominently in this production. Rusi and Jean-Michel Cousteau demonstrate some of what they are doing to preserve this paradise.

The McGillivray-Freeman production and Michele and photography is top notch, and our friends Rob and Cat, owners of the liveaboard dive boat NAI'A used for the filming, guided Howard and Michele Hall to all our favorite sites their cinematography is superb, in spite of the major problems faced by using the huge and unwieldy IMAX system. Those interested in scuba diving, some of the world's best dive spots and the state of the ocean will love this DVD and come away convinced we should never have called this planet, 70.78% of which is covered by the world's oceans and water, "Earth."

If you own a high end HTPC (home theater personal computer), and a HD capable display, you owe it to yourself to buy this movie. Simply put, the Microsoft WMV transfer in high definition (both 720p and 1080p) is the best image I have ever seen on our home theater's very expensive projection system($30k JVC Lcos system).

There are some downsides....

1) Requires a very beefy computer. 3.0 Ghz is recommended by Microsoft, although some are getting away with lower powered machines by using the lower-quality 720p verion

2) Proprietary audio codec requires you to have the computer decode the audio, and send it to your amplifier via analog cables. There is no DTS or DD track on the HD version.

3) DRM You have a choice of one video player, Windows Media 9. The movie has digial rights management on it, which can only be viewed by a Microsoft player. While this implementation is much better than the T2 high definition release (which required you to have an internet connection to get authorization), it's still a bit limiting.

Despite the problems, This is right up there with the best film based HDTV content I have viewed from HDnet or HD HBO.

I just ordered this from Amazon because of the selling price of $11.00 free shipping. I'm SO glad I took the chance. This is an AMAZING blu-ray disc. The quality of the sound is as good, if not better, than the picture quality. Fantastic underwater photography will have you in awe. If you're into this sort of thing, this is a MUST have for your blu-ray collection.

Hey, my name is Marcus and I'm 19 now. Anyways, I grew up watching the Winx Club back in 2004 when I was in elementary. I fell in love with the show, because it reminded me a little of one of my old fave TV series, Sailor Moon. I was devastated after buying all the Winx DVDs and hearing in 2007 that The Fox Box/4kids TV lost the rights. Then I was excited when Nick obtain the rights. Thus, I am disappointed that they cut out the majority of this movie. The movie is on youtube, and it is originally an 1 hr & 29 mins. & 59 secs. but they made it only 45 mins. TF? -_Why wait to down size the 2nd movie, but leave the 1st one alone?

This Winx Club movie is even better than the first. I'm glad that Nick took over the rights from 4 KIDS so that the later seasons became availible. This movie reveals the secret why Prince Sky's father always seem to have trouble with his relationship with Bloom in the TV series. Its great to see how much Bloom has grown and become less dependent on her parents thought it nice in this movie seeing Bloom's Earth parents together with her birth parents. The movie eals with Bloom's birth father being upset with Sky for not taking Bloom to the princess ball and his search for a better suitor for her. Bloom knows her heart lies with Sky and with the Winx help plans to get to the bottom of Sky's action when the Trix's newest attack causes The Winx to loose their powers and the girls join with The Specialists on a new quest.

As a fan of magical girls or in this case, guardian fairy princesses -I was overjoyed to see that both of the Winx Club movies received US English releases. I loved what Nickelodeon did with the first film, and after seeing the second in the European-English dub and loving it, I hoped the good feelings would continue.

But then I saw the 45 minute running time on the first disc and all the good feelings were gone.

The movie isn't bad though I honestly think that the major change to the plot still worked somehow, probably for the better. The original movie's plot actually has Sky [*not really a spoiler*] propose marriage to Bloom, not invite her to a Princess Ball [which would probably be something Bloom would prefer doing to Sky, given her personality], so it's a sudden huge step for our main couple right at the get-go of the movie; it's understandable that Nick probably changed this to relieve parents of the idea of their child's beloved show about love, friendship, fairies and magic having young teen love just instantly leading to marital happiness and bliss, and a Princess Ball is more of something that the general age range for Winx Club would probably love anyway [it works for the other Princesses in the fictional media anyway. Plus, it's 'Princesses'. I think it sells itself.].

Other than that, the plot is still "bad witches trying to rid the good magic from the world, good fairies fight to save the magic, yadda-yadda-yadda" we all know the drill. There are inconsistencies in the film [since this supposedly takes place after Season 4; this is true in both versions], but the original RAI English music remains [which is a miracle in itself] and the CGI animation is really quite pretty.

Still, the sudden edits to make a supposed 87 minute movie into half its time have a good plot is what makes this release fail. A lot of unnecessary scenes that I found amusing in the original film were cut, and added with the plot changes, this film is like Nickelodeon's good attempt at being like the show's original US licensee, 4Kids Entertainment [who was infamous for their many edits and cuts to anime and foreign cartoon series]. Just that last sentence is a sad thought to even think about, but they did it.

I really wish the full movie was dubbed into Nickelodeon-English, as I honestly prefer their voices than the European cast [and even the 4Kids cast, though they never made it this far]. Oh well, at least there are seven episodes of the show Season 5! on the second disc to whet your Winx appetite. If anything, you should buy the DVD solely for the episodes and maybe watch the movie once before using it as a cup-coaster. If you have a Winx Club fan or a fairy/princess-obsessed child in your house, the movie should tide them over after a couple of hours... until they find the original European-English version on Youtube to be much better than the Nick cut.

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

Not counting a few shallow effects, there are 11 out of screen effects. 4 that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer and another 3 around 25%. Bubbles float around extending up to 50% for 90 seconds. Grinding sparks shoot out for 15 seconds up to 50%. A fishing net hangs out 35% for 15 seconds and there is a floating window at about 20%. The effects in the menu are also very nice.

No real complaints about the in screen 3D. Most of the footage is clear and excess parallax only showed itself a few times.

MY 3D RATING = GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different. What I see at 25% you may see at 15% or 35%. To fully realize how far something is out of the screen for you, pause on an effect and direct a partner with an extended finger to the tip of what you are seeing. You may be surprised.

I haven't seen that many IMAX films on the Grand Canyon so I won't be able to give any real comparisons, but I will say this one does at least deliver on what I was looking for: Nice wide footage of the Grand Canyon. Although most of the footage is personal shots of the expedition you do get some really good aerial footage as well as other impressive nature shots.

The difference between this particular documentary and what I would normally expect from a Grand Canyon is that it has a conservation message tied to it. Instead of focusing solely on nature's wonder there is a lot of footage on the effects of drought and siphoning of the Colorado River. So if you are looking for a full-on nature safari this isn't exactly it. At the same time it's not like you aren't getting any absolutely amazing footage either. Just not as much as I was expecting.

Like many IMAX films coming to Blu-Ray the AVC transfer is breathtaking. The 3-D on this release is indeed in full 1080p as opposed to the 720p some studios are mulling over for their 3-D BD releases. Every little detail will stand out, even on the included 2-D version (even if those details won't come out and touch you). The audio is equally immersive with the DTS HD MA 5.1 track getting you wrapped up in the sounds of the canyon all over. There is also a German DTS HD audio track. Unfortunately like the original Blu-Ray release I think there are no subtitles of any kind. There are a somewhat respectable list of extra features on this release, which I suppose is better than expected. Most of the extras are standard definition with the exception of one. It looks like they took out some of the features that are on the 2-D only Blu-Ray released a little while back like the HD MFF IMAX Productions retrospective, conservation tips, fact sheet and trivia. I guess you can say it's small price to pay for the 3-D aspect. Still some will miss the retrospective.

Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk is a very worthwhile documentary that shows the real beauty of the Grand Canyon... if you don't mind the preachy parts. Of course conservationists will really appreciate the fact filled message as well as the eye candy. The IMAX theater release was also in 3-D so now you get the full experience of this 40 minute feature... well... aside from the massive IMAX viewing screen of course.

I just got a 3d TV in July 2010. This DVD is by far the best Bluray 3D to date. I am buying all that are generally released since so many are being tied to buying the sets now a days. (A practice that is hurting the very customers that support 3D by buying a 3D TV, then can only get certain movies)

An interesting story, that is a little one sided, but nevertheless truthful, tied together with breathtaking cinematography.

One of the few 3D movies released to date that not only shows 3D depth, but sends the picture towards you. Other 3D movies do this, but only for a moment or two. This production is great at that. The resolution is crisp and clear. The colors of the canyon really get shown off. Beautiful. Makes me want to go there on my next vacation.

A great film of one of our most treasured natural resources. The best 3D to date. You can't go wrong here...

I didn't see any description for this disk when writing this so here is a quick summary: The Colorado river is dwindling due to our ever expanding need for fresh water. Conservationist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and botanist Wade Davis (along with their daughters) and canyon guide Shana Watahomigie take an expedition to illustrate the need for changing the way the Colorado is exploited.

I haven't seen that many IMAX films on the Grand Canyon so I won't be able to give any real comparisons, but I will say this one does at least deliver on what I was looking for: Nice wide footage of the Grand Canyon. Although most of the footage is personal shots of the expedition you do get some really good aerial footage as well as other impressive nature shots.

I have several IMAX dvds and had high expectations about this new Blu-ray product. I especially liked the Ganges and Mysteries of the Nile productions and expected even better footage here since they were filming the Colorado River and landscape of the Grand Canyon.

I think as a conservation film this was okay. However, if you are interested in landscapes and river rafting, I've seen so much better out there and I was disappointed in the quality and coverage. I have a new Blu-ray player and expected better from this film. I guess it loses something once out of the IMAX, 3D environment it was designed for. It almost seemed over-exposed. Too much time focusing on clever graphics. After all, this is the Grand Canyon it is not needed and I found it slightly irritating.

I was bummed this was a shortened version of the Italian version. It left out some good scenes especially between Bloom and Sky.

The regular blu-ray is ok, and played well on my Sony TV. I've never seen so many

naturists with Tan-Lines. Most likely Actors & Actresses under a general heading.
