Sit back and enjoy this joy ride from the Wright brothers to the Blue Angels. The video footage is breathtaking. Of course, it isn't as good as on a real IMAX screen but you certainly can't do better on your home screen. Tom Selleck's narration is easy to listen to and soothing, in stark contrast to the excitement you'll feel watching the in-flight footage. This is entertaining, educational and just plain (plane!) fun.

I got this for my 4 year old son's birthday last year because he has a fascination with air planes. Let's just say everyone in the house loves it when it comes on. We have a large screen TV and it makes you feel like you are really there! The sounds are colors are vivid. This is a wonderful dvd to pull out on those rainy/snowy days. No matter how many times we have watched it, it still holds our attention.

I saw this IMAX film the first time at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, FL. (You'll notice in the opening credits that they helped with the film)I was entranced by the stunning video images and the "feeling" about flying that the scenery and Tom Selleck's narrative created. The score for the film is not "TOPGUN-esque" but rather a warm and inspiring score that reminded me of EVEREST. (Another Spectacular MacGillivray Freeman effort). Needless to say I saw it another 3 times while I was in flight school. To make it easy on prospective buyers I would offer this: If you don't fly or aren't particularly interested in aviation, but have ever been curious as to what makes people want to do it, this film should shed some light. If you fly or are an aviation buff...well, this film really hits the bullseye. Difficult to put in words just how but watch the film and you know what I mean

I just can't get past this BD being just 37 minutes. Great footage, no doubt! Made even better in HD! But even knowing it's a short movie, when those closing credits roll you're like, "That's it?! Damn." Sure, in "The Making of..." you learn it's like a million dollars a minute (or something ridiculous like that) to shoot IMAX from an F/A-18 and so you can understand why the film is not longer, but still...37 minutes?

I watched 'The Magic of Flight' after vieiwing another IMAX film titled 'The Alps' (which blew me away).

It's clear that tMoF is a much older movie and this shows in all apsects of its production compared to the newer documentaries brought out by the same company on the IMAX format.

This doesn't mean tMoF isn't worth a watch, especially for fans of the genre, but I think it's average at best and would only recommend this title if the price reflects this.

Elliott Gould gives another great performance as the world weary, hard drinking loner (ala `Getting Straight', `The Long Goodbye', `MASH'), but similar to his other early eighties foray into Disney films `The Devil and Max Devlin', his loner character is tested and softened through unexpected events. Geneviève Bujold also sticks to previous performances as the determined and sexy emissary of good (`Coma', `Earthquake'). Both leads give a nice edge to this adventurous tale, made at a time when Disney was making some interestingly cast and original live action films like `The Black Hole', `Amy' and `TRON'. Rick Schroder, in the prime of his childhood acting career, plays virtually the same character as he did in `The Champ'. All of this cinematic pedigree adds a wonderfully entertaining element to a film that could have dived into the painfully mawkish. Complete with night shark attacks, stranded Japanese soldiers, orphans, an eclectic menagerie of animals (who ever sees a mallard duck in the same vicinity as one of those hump backed African ox), and a great South Pacific setting this film has something for everyone. A guaranteed good night with nods to the adults and thrills and adventure for the kids. Hearkens back to a not particularly distant past when Disney was making wholesome original films with a little edge.

As always Anchor Bay does a beautiful job in the DVD transfer, giving more time and respect to Disney's library than Disney does for its own films. As with all Anchor Bay DVDs, highly recommended.

There are a number of new movies that are great for a family but this is an old and timeless classic! Great movie!

This is a great movie. My sons watched it (lots!) when they were younger. I've never heard anything about this movie (either before, or since we watched it years ago) I was really excited to find it on DVD so my grandkids could watch it. My grown son also wants to watch it again. A great family movie!

Elliott Gould stars as an impecunious pilot who ,in order to stay one step ahead of two strong arm men anxious to collect his gambling debts ,reluctantly agrees to fly a cargo of animals to a remote Pacific island in the company of a nun ,Sister Bernadette (Genevieve Bujold). She has conceived the idea of importing the livestock as a way of converting the islanders to a farming existence .

Omens are not propitious-the plane is old and rickety ; Gould is unenthusiastic about animals;Gould and Bujold clash and two pre-teenage children stowaway on the plane .

The plane goes offcourse and Gould is forced to ditch on a remote island which -just to complicate matters -is occupied by two Japanese naval officers who have not heard that World War two is over ,and who attack the plane without success.

The bulk of the movie shows how the parties combine in an attempt to escape from the island and how the internal conflicts are resolved.

Nicely shot on location in Hawaii and with a strong performance from the underrated Bujold ,this watchable movie is acceptable family fare but would have been all the better for a livelier actor in the lead role .Gould lacks the lightness of touch that Disney regulars from this era like Garner or Dean Jones would have brought to proceedings.

Solid and watchable but second string Disney.

I know that some viewers might feel like there is a bit of a bait-and-switch when sitting down to watch the very adult drama "Flight." I was primed to see a movie about a harrowing plane crash. And indeed, this initiating sequence is staged with tremendous suspense and gut wrenching detail. It may be one of the more memorable scenes you are likely to see this year. But "Flight" is not really about this crash. It is, instead, a character study about addiction, about faith, and about taking responsibility. The heroic pilot that acted on that day is none other than Denzel Washington. But this is no ordinary hero, this is a mess of a man who fuels his life with drugs and drink. He is estranged from his family, defying propriety, and thinks that the rules don't apply to him. He's a great pilot, to be sure, that saved many souls. But he was also completely out of control when he did so. That is the moral dilemma at the heart of the movie. He is a hero. His bad acts did not cause the accident. And yet, he will still be cast in a villainous light if the truth emerges.

There are very few movies I go to these days where I really don't know what to anticipate. "Flight" started out in a completely unexpected way. We meet Washington right after a night of heavy drink and sex with a flight attendant. You know he shouldn't be flying, you know that tragedy is inevitable (if from the previews, if nothing else). But just as you are settling in, the movie takes us on a ninety degree tangent. We are than spending time with a junkie (Kelly Reilly) as she attempts to score her next fix. I was genuinely confused by this digression. Washington and Reilly split screen time during the opening scenes and fate will bring them together in the hospital. For the remainder of the movie, Reilly actively tries to rebuild her world while Washington struggles mightily to maintain the illusion of his normality. As the consequences of his addiction rise before him, Washington continues to back pedal. As a trial looms, will Washington pull it together? Will he ever be honest with himself?

At the center of "Flight" is a handful of strong and interesting performances. Without a doubt, this is one of Washington's finest roles. Even those that may not love the film itself would have to see the complexity, despair AND strength in this multi-layered character. But director Robert Zemekis (Oscar winner for the more fanciful Forrest Gump) has assembled a first rate cast to back up this bravura leading man. Don Cheadle displays a brash assuredness as Washington's attorney, Bruce Greenwood is earnest and supportive as an important ally, and John Goodman is over-the-top but effective as his drug hook-up. In smaller roles, Tamara Tunie, Nadine Velazquez, and Brian Geraghty all score pivotal moments as members of the flight crew on that fateful day. And then we have Reilly. The British actress is given an extremely meaty role as a ravaged soul fighting her way to salvation.

As an addiction drama, "Flight" is an in-your-face and provocative illustration of a man in denial. The movie also looks at faith in a way few studio films do. I appreciated that the movie (and its screenplay by John Gatins) doesn't shy away from complex issues. It is more thoughtful, more contemplative than you might initially be aware of. I'm not sure, in the end, that I believed some of the final moments and decisions. But in many ways, this was more about the journey than the destination. As long as you aren't expecting an action movie, "Flight" has a lot to recommend it. It isn't perfect, but this contemplative drama will give you a lot to think about. And it also boasts a slew of terrific performances. KGHarris, 12/12.

Now, when I first saw this movie I had no idea what it was about. I only knew that it had a tremendous Oscar-winning actor playing the role of a pilot. I had no idea I was in for such a wild ride. I will point out first and foremost that this is a very well put together piece of cinema. The acting, pacing, cinematography, character development is nothing short of top-notch. That being said, I can understand how marketing and trailers could have caused many people to become mislead to what the film would be covering as many of the negative reviewers seemed to have missed the point. This movie was about a plane crash in the way that The Shawshank Redemption was about escaping prison. Yes, those are both the fundamental plot points but they're more like a side effect of the central themes. (Not to say that the crash scene in Flight wasn't one of the most intense scenes I'd seen in years or that the prison escape scene in Shawshank didn't give me an all encompassing feeling of joy). But in my humble opinion, a movie shouldn't be spelled out for you in the trailers. Too many films do that already (mainly comedies/action/romance). Instead you should go into a film with an open mind and see where it takes you. Without giving too much away, you may be pleasantly surprised, as I know I was. This is the kind of film that makes you reflect on the choices you make. What you would do to save your reputation. How your words affect those around you. How your actions affect those you love. And how to find salvation when it feels like its impossible to grasp.

This is a powerful movie about a man you to want to love's struggle with alcoholism, he just happened to be in a plane crash. This is not a courtroom drama, not an action flick (the plane crash happens in the first 30 min of the movie and lasts maybe 5-10 minutes tops, after that all drama.

The movie starts out with an epic plane crash scene, one of the best I've ever seen in a movie. Denzel's character takes control of the plane like a pro, with every ounce of drug and alcohol seemingly vaporized from his system and his instincts as an ex-Navy fighter pilot take over.

The movie is great in it has you rooting for this guy throughout, but he keeps letting you down as the viewer, as well as all of the characters in his life. You saw how awesome this guy was in the cockpit, he was a hero, yet he cannot overcome this addiction. How can a man who could do such extraordinary things be so vulnerable to addiction? The movie does this part very well.

The most powerful scene emotionally comes at the end during the NTSB hearing and the scenes that follow.

I will admit until I gauged what the film was really about I was kind of "meh" about it, but by the end I fully understood and appreciated it for what it was. Powerful movie indeed.

With the expansion of the 3-D DVD market, one noticeable trend is that films created specifically for the IMAX format are becoming more prevalent. Those starved for 3-D options have got a lot of choices available courtesy of IMAX from great (The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti) to painful (Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia and Ultimate G's: Zac's Flying Dream) to those in between (Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs). Before I break "Legends of Flight" down, I will say this film utilizes 3-D to greater affect than any other IMAX presentation that I've seen. But that's not all I look for--I want it all! I want a film that is attractive to look at, that incorporates great 3-D, and has an entertainment value within its narrative. "Legends of Flight" balances the three to varying success in its 42 minutes but undeniably succeeds as a visual treat.

Narrative: If you have an interest in aviation or aviation technology, then this film should be a slam dunk for you! No questions asked--just buy it now. If that subject does not peak your enthusiasm, I'll expand a bit. The film chronicles work on a couple of Boeing's most contemporary planes--the immense Airbus A380 and the glider-like 787 Dreamliner. With frequent shots in the construction warehouse and animated schematics of the plane's layout and structure--sections of the narrative seem a bit dry to a casual observer. But the film is also bolstered by the introduction of several classic planes from the past--and when we fly with these creations, the film soars. In fact, every time we're in the air--this is glorious entertainment. Visually arresting at all times, the film was interesting if not exceptional entertainment from a content perspective.

Features: While I am no great fan of the making-of featurette, the film DVD provides a 24 minute look behind the scenes. As the movie was so exquisitely shot, it is interesting to see how those sequences were captured on film. The sophisticated filming techniques make this better than average. Add a few trailers for other IMAX products and that's it for added content.

3-D: I know, it's all anyone cares about. I'm calling it--this is easily the best 3-D I've seen in a presentation of the sort. We actually fly with about six different aircraft over snow covered mountains, oceans, and green valleys. It is incredibly beautiful and looks unbelievable as layered, naturalistic 3-D. Unlike many other films, you can see that this was designed for 3-D. The film is also populated by vibrantly colored graphics that explode off the screen. And there are some animated flying creatures that soar past your eyes. One sequence showcases these manufactured animals flying across a real landscape and the result is stunning (even if some of the animation is slightly creepy). Some people don't like this computer generated 3-D imagery, so beware if that's your particular pet peeve. From start to finish, the film incorporates 3-D into its presentation and you simply can't be disappointed. With 5 star Natural 3-D, 4 star computer generated 3-D, and 4 star narrative--it is one of the better choices on the home market. I wish there had been more Legends flying though! KGHarris, 6/11.

I am an Aviation Nut and was first attracted to this movie at a local 3D display to sell 3D TVs. I was impressed with the excerpts and shots of the glider. I bought the movie and start following the story. It's not about legends; it's about bringing the Boeing 787 to life. The technical content is lame and disjointed. Unrealistic shots of Computer Animated Airplanes plague the movie. Gimmicky 3D wire animations models are shoved at the audience for the sake of 3D and not telling the story. Even as a documentary of telling the Boeing 787 story, it lacks real character and feeling. Leave this Blu-Ray/DVD on the shelf.

The overall PQ is great for this IMAX film, and those CG'd planes look great! They look so detailed and good, thought I kind of knew they were CG'd the first time I watched this; I kept trying to convince myself those are actual planes... having said that, I wish those in the sky (like the Super Constellation) are the real things instead. Barring a few shots I thought could've angled better, this film is pretty damn good overall.

One thing I never understood about this Imax production is ..... Why if you have the real planes.... you use Cgd ones for the flight sequences ??, you miss the real stuff these legendary machines carry in them, the noise, the rivets, the cgd's are so perfect they lack....... LIFE ¡¡¡, no better than watching a NASCAR race on Disney's Cars movie ¡¡¡¡

When I saw this in theaters, I was hoping to see some kind of documentary discussing classic aircraft. Instead what I got was an advertisement for the new Dreamliner, which included Boeing ridiculing other aircraft designers. Do not waste your money with this film.

This film is by far the most transfixing snowboarding experience I have ever seen.

The literal meaning of words like epic, amazing & awesome have been overused describing everyday occurrences, dumbing them down to the point that they will not adequately describe what is captured in this film.

It literally inspires awe and amazes the eyes and ears.

The camera work, soundtrack and editing are flat out ridiculous.

Seeing is believing, don't take my word for it.

Enjoy the ride.

This film got a lot of people excited ahead of its release just looking at its trailers, and it meets those high expectations. There are a few nods to traditional documentary film-making here and there (a few voiceovers, a few shots of the crew goofing around on bad weather days), but the main focus is on amazingly skillful snowboarding in settings that are mostly stunning. The level of skill on display at every level is breathtaking: the snowboarders, trail builders, pilots, camera crew, editors, and sound people have made a thing of beauty.

I watched this movie with my two young boys, and their reactions to both the landscape and the snowboarding were loud and hilarious. So many exclamations of "WOW!" (You'd better not mind a few people swearing if you plan to watch with your kids, mind you.)

I could go on, but here's the bottom line: even if you don't care about snowboarding or the mountains, this movie is a visual and aural feast of rare quality that will not fail to impress you.

I took the time to write a review on this product because in my honest opinion, I find this set to be the best bang for your buck type deal with the footage it offers. If your into beautiful scenery and adventure, this movie provides it all. It shows a lot of beautiful scenery along with a lot of fast action. The scenery is great for testing color accuracy based on your taste. The fast action is great for fine tuning the performance of your tv, preferably the motion. The movie is a great, I wouldnt call it short, but its enough for a great/fun experience. If thats not enough, the bonus features included in the blu ray are awesome! 3 POV videos of the boarders going down insane mountains, amazing birds eye scenery, and the toughest to watch; all their terrible falls... All in all, for its price, its definitely a great movie to purchase for all the features, scenery, and adventure youll be getting with this buy. They really put a lot of work into it with all the amazing footage they captured. That had like 15 HD cameras with slo-mo and everything, I wouldnt know that if it wasnt for the behind the scenes footage from the blu ray set. Trust me, do yourself a favor and buy this blu ray set and youll have a lot of sweet eye candy to show off along with some bad ass Dolby HD audio!
