The sharks (except for maybe 1-3 shots) were all CGI and all looked like CRAP. Perhaps in theater 3D it looked good, but not in 2D at home.

The movie had potential. But the silly reasoning behind why the sharks were there combined with the bad CGI just made this movie bad. The first 30-45 minutes weren't all that bad and it was semi entertaining. I just wish we could have been invested in these characters, gotten to actually know them and like them. Its just a shame that it ended up being as bad as it was.

If you can get passed the awful CGI you might like this movie.

Country gal Sara, wants to show her city classmates what small town life has to offer. Rounding up 6 of her bestest friends she takes them to her family's sprawling remote lake house for a weekend of debauchery. Cell phones don't work, of course. The gang have a great old time drinking, boating, and having sex (I made up the last part, there is NO sex or boobs in this movie) but things take a sudden turn for the worse when football hunk, Malik, gets his arm torn off by an enormous shark while waterskiing (!). A shark, in a lake, you ask? Yes, a shark in a lake. We are informed that it is a salt water lake, silly goose. As Malik clings to life the classmates try to figure out a way to get him to safety and the only solution appears to be by boat. Adding to their troubles are Sara's former, shady, hillbilly friends who seem to delight in the gang's predicament. We eventually learn that the hillbillies have stocked the lake with many different breeds of shark in order to film people being eaten for a "Faces of Death" like movie they are preparing for a web show (I'd watch it).

Shark Night 3D is just so...dumb. The hillbillies are as stereotyped as they come (one is even named "Red") and the college kids are a bland mix of interchangeable actors. The director attempts to crow bar in some "romance" between the characters but you won't care because soon most of them will be chum anyway. The PG13 rating guarantees no boobs or gore so the entire fare ends up being a big tease. Even with padding the entire film is only 1:17 minutes long.

Shark Night 3D was not what i was expecting at all. I thought it was going to be like Piranha 3D but that was not the case.Shark Night 3D took a different route and it worked, very suspenseful. I really enjoyed the movie. The 3D was AMAZING!! the sharks looked so real it was freaky. The hammerhead in particular looked so real that combined with the 3D element i felt as though i was face to face with the shark and it gave me some chills. I'am hoping for a sequel so in the meantime i will wait for its blu-ray release. I recommend for you all to see it :)

Okay first off if you are not a cheesy horror buff you will probably not like this movie. The main reason i liked this movie was because of the great 3D effects it had in it.Seeing it was shot in 3D seemed like a win all around and i was very excited for this to come out on 3D blu-ray. The problem is there is no news of this being released right now on 3D only 2D. I can not begin to tell you all the great effects you are being robbed of by not offering a 3D version of this film. The movie itself was very plain and generic and is like a kiddie up version of piranhas in 3D. (except shark night had even better 3D effects.)

I really don't get why you would shoot a movie in 3D and then not even sell it as a 3D movie. I still feel bad for all those who haven't been able to see avatar or legends in 3d. these flicks where ment to be shot this way and so did shark night......IN 3D!!!! I know 3D isn't for every one but some movies really have benefited from the technology and this movie is a good example.

"Shark Night" is the tale of vacationers whose fun weekend at a lake house turns into a nightmare when they become victims of a series of shark attacks. When Sara (Sara Paxton) and her pals arrive at her parents' Louisiana lake house, the party is in full gear. Everyone is having a wild time until Malik (Sinqua Walls) loses his arm in what initially appears to be a tragic water skiing accident.

Concerned with getting him to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible, it isn't until they're far from shore that they realize the lake is teeming with hungry sharks and a small speedboat isn't about to stop them from getting their next meal. In addition to the sharks, Director David R. Ellis ("Snakes on a Plane") has thrown in some backwoods "Deliverance"-style rednecks and inept law enforcement.

The film has its share of "Jaws"-inspired scares, but lacks the polish and genuine fright factor of the Spielberg classic. The plot device is improabable at best and serves only to offer up a number of bloody shark attacks every few minutes to keep us from dozing off. The Blu-ray edition contains several featurettes and a Digital Copy.

This was called `Quick' in South Korea, but has been released here under a different moniker. It is about Gi soo (Min-ki Lee) and Ah-rom (Ye-won Kang) who were both members of a motor bike street gang; how do we know they are a gang? Simple they don't wear their helmets I'd have gone for something on the back of the jackets myself but never mind. This gang seems to welcome all comers including the Papa John pizza delivery bloke that's diversity for you. Anyway they get a bit out of hand and some nasty pile ups occur, so we fast forward and the gang members have gone their separate ways.

Gi-soo has now become the coolest looking courier ever dressed more for a bit part in `The Matrix' than delivering manila envelopes, and one day he gets told to deliver a tiny package somewhere in Seoul and it promptly blows the building to hell. His next call sees him pick up a member of a Girl Power band called `The OK Girls' and take it from me they aren't if their `show' was anything to go by. Problem is it happens to be Ah-rom and she wants his helmet, I mean crash helmet, as she is going to be riding pillion. Then it makes some funny noises and a mobile phone that Gi-soo didn't know he had rings to tell him that the helmet is fitted with a bomb that will explode if removed or if the helmet and phone are more than ten metres apart, or if this nutter decides to kill them. Meanwhile the police have worked out that he is delivering the bombs and so are in very hot pursuit.

So the scene is set for slapstick, comedic, romp across South Korea with a plethora of extra characters and load of car/bike chases and explosions. That is where this scores quite high in the octane stakes; it is the sheer quantity of the action. A word on that, this is not CGI but in places enhancement has been used for the explosions etc. But the stunts are real and they show you in the run offs a lot of the `how it was done' shots and people did get hurt. It also laps up every cliché going including having a bike go through a pile of cardboard boxes, which made me laugh out loud. This is almost like a cool, video game at times.

Whilst the plot is not taxing the acting is juvenile in places and the action full on, this is actually quite a good film. The sub titles are however, well below par with typos and even some sections not translated. That said I needed something to just watch and not think about and this was perfect for that scenario. I love Asian cinema especially South Korean and so was predisposed to liking this, but it is a generous four stars, so might not be for everyone and do avoid if you want something deep and meaningful. If you want a full throttle story of explosions and revenge and you don't mind ludicrous stunts, then you will enjoy.

I should preface my review and my rating by saying it's 3D-centric. In other words, it's based on the quality of the film's 3D and not on the movie itself.

I certainly agree with reviewers who praise the copious amounts action in this film. This review is more about the 3D content of the film. The film appears to have been converted to 3D in post production in that only one or two items have any "depth" to them. The backgrounds appear to be flat with no item in the background any further or closer to the viewer.

I found the 3D effect to be very subtle; so subtle, in fact, I found myself checking my 3D glasses so make sure they were working.

So if flat-out action is what you're looking for, you could certainly do worse than this movie. If you're looking for some 3D entertainment, I'd encourage you to keep looking.

And how Wood didn't garner a best supporting actor nod is a crime. Great flick for those who have an appreciation for those slow-burn movies of the 70's. Now if they would only release Ceramic Space Heater on Blu-Ray. My VHS copy is getting worn out.

While the resolution is great, they blew it because it's 15 second movie that loops for an hour. So you can't sit and watch the fire progress. It just loops and loops and loops. Good for impressing your friends with the 3D effect, but that's about all. Stupid of them to not to just let the camera run for an hour.

Best Deals for Fireplace 3D (Region Free)

Rip-Off....because the recording of the fireplace is looped to play again every minute, so you're getting the same sounds over and over and over again, its gets annoying, I was hoping to have the fire burn down much more, who ever made this Blue ray 3d disk ripped a lot of people off, because like I said the fireplace recording is on a very short loop, The price for this should be $2 dollars and that's it. Rip-off

We had just finished watching the masterpiece "Michael Flatley Returns as Lord of the Dance 3D" when my wife thought it would be a nice way to 'set the mood' by popping in this blu-ray while I wandered the house like a rockstar wearing my 3d glasses looking for a little post-dance snack time!

Unfortunately I didn't know she'd bought this amazing 3d gem, so when I walked in the bedroom I panicked, yelled "FIRE!" at the top of my lungs repeatedly, grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher and proceeded to hose down my 72 inch LCD.

I just hope my wife can forgive me for tossing her out of the house in her nightie when it was -33 below zero (just trying to save her life)! If only fewer neighbors had captured the moment with facebook pics...

Overall, this Blu-ray did its job a little too well. Sorry St Cloud Fire Department!

Personally we have found "fireplace" DVDs to be relaxing as background content, whether during conversation or quiet times of reflection with a warm mug of coffee. Having said that, wearing (passive) 3D glasses is not conducive to a background context. The quality of this 3D Blu-ray disk is very good. The only portion that appears to extend forward beyond the screen is the center section of the metal grate. Instead it has a very nice 2-3 ft depth to the picture, giving the sense of looking at an actual fireplace. Uses gas logs so they don't burn down over the duration (I prefer those that change like a real fire). Didn't care for the included music so we opted for fireplace sounds only. Consider this a qualified recommendation, meaning you may enjoy it as long as you are not multi-tasking where the 3D glasses have to be on-and-off. If you are looking at other options I would also recommend the "Fireplace for Your Home" (2D, easy listening music version versus Christmas music).

This is a decent horror flick , that can be a little hard to understand at first but the story is wrapped up at the end so that's ok. This was shot in 3d and you can tell that it was too. there are a few ghosting scenes but mostly the 3d is OUTSTANDING. The depth is exceptional and there are some great effects in this flick. The film concerns six chinese people who get sucked into a spooky hotel. They meet a dog monster , a killer and a ghost. The ghost doesn't pop out at you as much as you would think. This has also got some great 3d cgi effects. I did notice only two scenes with ghosting , but perhaps that was just my eyes. I was afraid when I bought this it would be a disaster 3d wise like 'shock labrynth' but it wasn't , it was actually quite good in that regard. There are many scenes that utilize 3d in a creative manner. The acting is well done , but the story is more average than some other pang movies that I have seen. It's worth owning this for the 3d though. There are several featurettes too and cast interviews. The picture looks outstanding because this is a 2011 movie and that's not old film stock by any means.

Best Deals for The Child's Eye 3D Blu-Ray (Region A) (English Subtitled) 2D and 3D

Childs eye 3D is the first movie to be shot in 3D in Thailand. The film itself is not that bad at all. It's nothing new from what you would expect from the Pang brothers. It's just your normal asian suspense horror. But I will admit this one does carry a little bit more gore to it than what I am used to seeing from the Pang Brothers.

To give a quick brief review of the story, A group of friends are on vaction in Thailand when a big riot hits and the group of friends are stuck at a random hotel in the mean time cause they cant get to the airport due to the riot. At some point one of the girls in the group see's a group of kids that look out of place and tries to be friend them. On the way they find out the kids arent what they seem to be and the man who does handy work in the hotel may have more to him then what meets "the eye"...get it? oh never mind i was never good at humor any way. aside from that there is a big twist to all this that i wont lie seems to be out of place for this story but hey that's what makes some of these movies fun though right?

Now for the 3D!!!!!!

For this being the first 3D movie to be done and shot in Thailand I felt they did a pretty good job. There isnt a huge amount of pop outs in this movie but they do have a few fun ones in the mix. One that sticks out in my mind was in the begining of the movie during the riot scene a cop shoots off a gas bomb that goes flying out of the tv and stops about 15 inches away from your face!!!(kind of cool huh?)There was definitly added depth throught the whole movie (not avatar/hugo/tranformers depth but still plenty of good spacing between objects none the less) and from what I can remember there was very little to no ghosting/shadowing that some 3D movies seem to suffer from and seeing I watch 3D on an active plasma 3D that really says some thing.

To sum it up, If you like asain suspense horror with some mild gore and above average 3D effects I think you will probably enjoy this. I would also recomend you watch "Sector 7 3D" that has great 3D and is a really fun asian creature feature to watch as well!!!

I had no expectations of being disappointed with a Disney/Pixar BD, and being that it took me a whole dedicated day to get through everything, I now feel it was worth every penny. The film was enjoyable, funny, sad, and scary filled with some nice messages about life and loss. I can understand why the majority of my customers loved it.

The Blu clarity is outstanding, and the amount of reference points are extensive, but one that stands out the most for contrast lines would have to be when the house is entering the lair (balloons against the dark cavern). The sound is selectable between 5.1 DTS, 2.0 DTS and Descriptive English. The 5.1 was beautiful with tons of reference points, sometimes excruciating (that bird screeching) but thorough nonetheless. Now for the supplements (all times in minutes):

DISC 1: (BD)

* 5:46 Partly Cloudy short film. Was hilarious. A great depth test for your display with the clouds. Nice little message of tolerance no matter how difficult someone might be.

* 4:40 Dug's Mission. An almost lo-def looking short take on our main dog dealing with the main three baddies on a chase.

* 22:17 Adventure Out There. A must see documentary about the crew taking the actual trip to the Tepui location in South America. A beautiful travel infomercial in itself. Loved how their guide only wore sandles for the ascent and hikes.

* 4:56 Alternate Scenes Ending of Muntz. Sketches and interviews regarding different endings for that bad guy that they had come up with.

* 1:00 How-to on using the Digital Copy.

* Cine Explore option while watching the film. The two directors give their commentary with multiple pop-up screens showing art, ideas, etc.

* Screen Saver. Allows you to set a time period for your screen saver to activate.

* Maximize Your Home Theater. The standard Pixar multi-step process for setting all of your theater capabilities.

DISC 2: (BD)

Documentaries

* 6:24 Geriatric Hero. History behind the creation of our old guy. All of these documentaries are interview oriented with sketches and film clips to supplement.

* 8:26 Canine Companions. In depth analysis on the breed choices, training and dog behavior studied to get the dogs in the film to be more dog like.

* 9:00 Russel Wild Explorer. Covers the reasons for his character to have the loss and why he was "egg" shaped as opposed to other sketch ideas.

* 5:04 Kevin (bird). Nice reference to the Swiss Family Robinson ostrich; covered the hardest part of any of these animation films the feathers.

* 4:38 Homemakers Pixar. Enjoyed the work that went into them studying sub-floors and lighting options in making this look so real in the house.

* 6:25 Balloons and Flight. Tells the now famous number of balloons used; some interesting dirigible history; shows the Pixar group using that local Bay Area air service I keep seeing fly around here (research stuff).

* 7:37 Composing for Characters. Have to be into the musical/scoring stuff for this one.

Extras

* Global Guardian Badge Game. After the initial setup of name, difficulty levels and tutorial material, the game has an extensive amount of country/geography material. Customers grouped around and we did fine for the United States section, but we randomly tried Africa and we bombed (some of the countries they were asking for I hadn't heard of in years) good learning tool though.

* 9:15 Alternate Scene Married Life. Another sketch/interview piece about more material being removed/added into that section of the film. The scene itself would have been only a minute longer.

* 6:00 montage. A mix of characters doing funny things will make the kids laugh.

* Screen Saver option.

DISC 3 (DVD)

* Film, plus special features from disc 1. WITH THE EXCEPTION of no Spanish subtitles/language; English only.

DISC 4 (Digital Copy).

* Code both unlocks the copy and gets you the usual points at the Disney site.

Overall, an excellent product no matter how you look at it. The case has that new single hinge, multi-page off center chassis that has proven to be less than durable, but it should suffice for low usage storage. Enjoy.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it -they're going to create an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster animated movie. But in the meantime, they're still putting out delightful animated movies like "Up," which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety old man. It's a charming, fun little adventure story with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet little story about loss and love.

As a child, the shy Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared love of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, move into their "clubhouse" together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a real estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn't going quietly -instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an enthusiastic, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the ride. Poor kid was just trying to earn an "assisting the elderly" badge.

And the jungle trek to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a big emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug ("I am jumping on you, bird!"), and a mysterious old man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the old guy is very familiar to Carl -and to capture Kevin, he's willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how "Up" wouldn't be as popular as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty old coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages -while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can appreciate Carl's love for his lost wife, and his slow realization that he's clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I've seen in a long time. Without a word, they show all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage -joys, sorrows (Ellie's inability to have children), growing old together, and finally loss.

But it's not a depressing movie by any stretch -in fact, it's like a childhood fantasy come to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of great dialogue ("Do you want to play a game? It's called See Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything." "Cool! My mom loves that game!") and an action-packed climax in an aged airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl -crotchety, grumpy, and determined to fulfill his wife's lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he's clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl's polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is determined to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special notice. These creatures are utterly hilarious -they talk ("I hid under your porch because I love you") and act the way dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to get shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of exclusive stuff. Grr. As for this one, there's a digital copy, the director's audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending "The Many Endings of Muntz," and the documentary "Adventure Is Out There" about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable animated shorts. "Partly Cloudy" has a much-abused stork having to deliver potentially harmful baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And "Dug's Special Mission" is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

"Up" continues Pixar's running tally of gloriously animated, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can enjoy. With that, I have only one more thing to say... SQUIRREL!

Best Deals for Up (2009) Disney Pixar / Region 6 PAL DVD / Official Chinese

Here's a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), former Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved... and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me cry.

I thought it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a shy young boy star-struck by a famous explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become fast friends, and vow to one day travel to Venezuela. After getting married, they buy their dream home and fix it up, hoping to fill it with children. Carl and Ellie's life together from childhood through old age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. These first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a happy marriage, and you truly feel Carl's pain when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers close in on Carl's beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and travel to Paradise Falls. A former balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of colorful balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a plump, plucky kid trying to earn a scouting badge.

Later, man and boy are joined by a golden retriever who can talk with his collar, and a huge, colorful bird. Dug the dog is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including his obsession with squirrels. Through a series of close calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain and saves the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a magical thing happens. Before, Carl's craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl's face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by beautiful hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole new world.

Up is an emotional movie, full of truth. It's one of the year's best films. Score another triumph for Pixar.

-By Julie Neal, author of The Complete Walt Disney World 2010.

Honest reviews on Up (2009) Disney Pixar / Region 6 PAL DVD / Official Chinese

Grab your husband or significant other (after packing off the kids for a sleep over, if applicable), pour some F.A.B.s (frosty adult beverage) and snuggle up on the couch to watch UP! A wonderful, touching movie about a widower who takes pleasure in circumventing those who would have him move to Shady Acres nursing home and give up the home he and his wife, Ellie, made. Walter, our protagonist, is known as a crotchety old man. What most people don't know is that Walter is a lonely man since his wife and life-long love died. They never made their dream trip to Paradise Falls. Like most of us of a certain age, we plan and dream, hoping to fulfill that dream one day. One day never came for Ellie and Walter; but now that the powers that be think he should be in a retirement home, Walter has a Plan. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, a young scout (Russell), trying to achieve a badge for Elderly Assistance, is caught up in Walter's plan to foil the well-meaning social worker.

This is a Disney/Pixar Studios film, so the images are just spectacular. I have seen the behind the scenes video (included on the discs) where the team of artists travels to Tepui in South America, the area Walter (& Russell) have their adventure. It's amazing how realistic the animation depicts the natural beauty of this area! I don't normally watch the "Extras" that come with a dvd, but in this case, made an exception and throughly enjoyed them. From the 3 shorts (including alternate endings) to the aforementioned trip by the artistic team to South America. Another disc is devoted to in depth behind the scenes and documentaries showing their studies of geriatrics to dog breeds. Everything very informative and not boring. The set also includes a digital copy of the movie Up (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + BD Live) [Blu-ray]. There is also a game (Global Guardian Badge game--a geography skills game that can be set for different skill levels), a 'deleted scene' piece on married life and a montage of stills (kinda a blooper reel feel) of various characters doing funny things/situations. Very funny stuff, especially for children.

All in all, this is a lush, amazing movie--both the story line as well as the animation. Characters are well developed and mostly (with one notable exception) likeable...especially the dog! Lots of life lessons included, par for Disney. A great way to spend a day or night (or both for all the discs!). Amazon has a GREAT PRICE on this set, better by far than any local stores. Combined with the awesome shipping and customer service, you cannot go wrong purchasing this Up set! Buy it today, schedule that one-on-one time with the love of YOUR life and another viewing with the family. Even my 76 year-old mother loved this movie. Make sure you buy Puffs Ultra Soft and Strong Facial Tissues, Family Boxes, 744-Count to have on hand for viewing, it is a quite touching, moving story of love and life! Highly recommended.

Another commendable, 4-star outing from Pixar.

The DVD packaging is another matter. There have been many complaints about the computer-incompatibility, but my gripe is about the "pecking order" for those that want the single-disc DVD vs. the 4-disc Blu-ray and everything in-between.

Time was when you bought a 2-disc set of a Pixar film, you got hours worth of neat, entertaining and enlightening extras (example: the exhaustive Super Heroes guide with "The Incredibles"). By the time "Cars" came out, you could only get a single-disc version with very few extras. "Ratatouille": same story. "Wall-E" somewhat rectified the situation with the available 3-disc version, which did have generous bonuses if you shelled out the bucks, that is. "Up" has the most deceptive packaging of all: a bare-bones single-disc version (you just want the movie and a lot of promos? You got it!), the "deluxe" DVD version (which Amazon/Disney advertise as a "Two-Disc Deluxe Edition + Digital Copy", which can imply there are three discs [there are not], and there are certainly NOT "hours of new bonus! [sic]", as the slip-sleeve boasts), and a 4-disc Blu-ray version for those fortunate enough to own that format. Disney is obviously hard-balling the recession-weary public into buying Blu-ray players and their inflated-priced discs and punishing those who are scraping by with an archaic DVD.

What would have been nice is an extras-packed double-DVD w/o the digital copy (I don't know anybody who really uses this), a better-valued single-DVD version and maybe even a single-Blu-ray.

The release date for a Pixar movie used to be an event. Now it's a downer, waiting to see how Disney rips its faithful public off again.

...and after the sound thrashing the critics gave it, I was not expecting to.

No spoilers, I promise.

Is it worth seeing in the theater?

Did you enjoy the first three?

Then the answer is a resounding yes.

I think the critics were expecting more of a rebirth for the franchise and that's not what this movie is.

It's called part 4 for a reason lol.

It's a definite continuation.

It was a little weird not having Orlando and Keira there but the new actors brought a wonderful new dimension to the film that after a few minutes I didn't miss Orlando or Kiera...not that I wouldn't mind seeing them in a future installment.

Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz were wonderful and perfect for this film.

So what was good?

Pretty much everything.

It's a Pirates of the Caribbean movie folks.

It's got action, action, and more action.

I've heard other complaints that it was paced too slowly.

???

Are you kidding, for a two hour plus movie this flew right by me.

The acting was excellent.

The score, pacing, cinematography was perfect.

A lot of people were turned off by the story line in part 3 and yes, it had it's moments of who's on first, who's on second, who is double crossing who in what scene from the next.

"Stranger Tides" does not suffer from this.

The story was interesting and enjoyable but not difficult to follow.

What didn't I like?

The first half of the movie is VERY heavy on action with little bits of dialog in between the chaos...not enough dialog actually.

The second half of the movie cuts back on the action and gives us way more character development and story.

The second half was actually much more enjoyable for me as the first half felt a tad unbalanced.

That minor gripe aside..if you loved 1,2 and 3 of the Pirates franchise, you'll enjoy this.

Not a rebirth but a darn good continuation of a series I love.

The magic has NOT been lost...

Funny.

A great story.

Incredible acting from everyone.

Entertaining.

Action...lots of it.

Can't wait for part 5.

Highly recommended.

In recent years, we've had franchises return for a fourth installment. Indiana Jones. Die Hard. Rambo. Scream. All of varying worth. Many critics say that these long running franchises returning for a 4th film never live up to the hype or to the series they are a part of. Well, 'Pirates 4' comes along to change all that. It is a sequel, coming 4 years after the last one(which is like 10 years in this generation where last week is old), it is a part 4, and it's wonderful. Critics say otherwise, but this is one movie where the audience has spoken, and they are loving it.

I could go into the story, but why bother? By now, everyone should know that Capt. Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp)is back, and he is journeying to the famed fountain of youth, along with old foe Barbarossa(the great Geoffrey Rush), evil Pirate Blackbeard(the even better Ian McShane), and old flame Angelica(Penelope Cruz) who may or may not be Blackbeard's daughter. Along the way, our characters run across exciting adventures and scary mermaids.

First of all, people and critics were quite vocal on how the two sequels were too complicated, over-stuffed, and confusing. Thankfully, this latest adventure simplifies the material in a way that harkens back to the wonderful, and now classic, original 2003 film. There is now B and C storylines to dampen down the festivities. Everything is pretty simple and crystal clear and easy to follow along. In fact, the whole movie has such a refreshing air to it, that it really does go back to the original. The immense charm of the original film with Depp's Sparrow and humor is here in full force. The magic is there. The fun time, popcorn blockbuster is there. Part 3 was disappointing and was missing most of this, but it's here in spades with part 4. Also in abundance is the action. Part 3 was so long that the action felt few and far between. Here, there is plenty of action. The movie never slows down and is never boring. Ever. New director Rob Marshall keeps things moving at a fun and brisk pace. It's continuously watchable and gorgeous, like all the others, to look at. It is, without a doubt, the most fun and entertaining movie in the franchise since the first one.

The cast is great. Johnny Depp is these movies. People come to see him in this role and he doesn't disappoint in this one. He seems more alive, lively, refrshed, and as amusing as ever. Elsewhere, you will be wondering "Orlando and Keira who?" You won't miss them. Penelope Cruz holds her own as Angelica. Rush is as great as he always is in the other films. And then there is Ian McShane. He is just cool. Blackbeard is a character to be reckoned with, and McShane is so evil and icy cool, that he owns every scene he is in. There are new characters littered throughout the film, but none of them really bring much. I will say though, that the actrss who plays Serena the mermaid, and I don't remember her name, may be one of the loveliest beauties I have seen on the silver screen in some time.

The critics have not been kind. Some have been downright savage, and I cannot understand why. The audienc I saw it with clapped at the end. "On Stranger Tides" may not be so strange, but it delivers what everyone wants and hopes for in a Pirate's movie. Easily the best of the sequels, the movie is great fun. It has a new zest of life and has a sharp script filled with rousing action, some great dialogue, and some great humor. What more can you ask for? I am a huge fan of the franchise. Part 3 was not what everyone wanted, but "On Stranger Tides" does a great job of steering this mighty franchise back on course. Part 5 cannot come fast enough!

Best Deals for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D & 2D Blu-Ray (Region

My ratings are based mainly on the QUALITY OF THE 3D, not the video content.

Not counting the shallower effects, there are about 64 out of screen effects that extend about 10% of the way, from the screen to the viewer but approximately half of them are very quick. 2 effects made it to 20%, 11 around 25% and 5 more at 30%. The majority of the effects are after the first half hour of the film.

Honorable mention effects included swords being thrust through a door (20%) or being pointed towards you (30% 3 times), a boney hand (30%), flakes falling from an explosion (25%), and the grumpy monkey (25%). There is also a real nice 10% sequence involving a water drop.

The 3D in itself is very good but Disney did struggle with scene framing, focusing and lighting, to best benefit a 3D film. I should clarify that the focusing issue is just the blurring of foreground objects to draw the viewers' attention to where the director wants it. This tactic has been used a lot in recent years for normal movies but it is just not conducive to a good 3D viewing experience.

Don't get me wrong, this is a worthy addition to any 3D collection. 3D cartoons are easy to produce but for real life 3D, there is a definite learning curve.

*** Jack and the gang are great in 3D ***

MY 3D RATING = VERY GOOD (poor, fair, good, very good, excellent)

Note: As far as the percentages go, everyone's eyes are different. What I see at 25% you may see at 15% or 35%. To fully realize how far something is out of the screen for you, pause on an effect and direct a partner with an extended finger to the tip of what you are seeing. You may be surprised.

Honest reviews on Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 3D & 2D Blu-Ray (Region

If there is one thing that is consistent with "Pirates of the Caribbean", you know that this film will make a ton of money in the box office.

And while many thought that the "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" was finished with the third film in the trilogy, "At World's End" would be the last we would see of Jack Sparrow. But the truth is, that no matter how film critics have shown their declining interest in the film, the audience have not.

And with the release of the fourth film "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", once again, the audience have shown their love for this film as it became the 8th highest grossing film of all time (worldwide), the third highest grossing film of 2011 and following "Dead Man's Chest" and "Toy Story 3', the third highest grossing film for Disney. The film which cost anywhere between $150-$250 million to make, earned over $1 billion in the box office.

VIDEO:

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is presented in 1080p High Definition (2:40:1). And as one can expect from Disney, the picture quality is fantastic. The majority of the film is shot outdoors, at sea or during day or night and for the most part, detail is high, skin tones are natural and blacks are deep and inky.

And once again, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski should receive credit for his spectacular cinematography, from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films to "Alice in Wonderland", Wolski is an expert in shooting in the darkest of scenes, underwater, in smoke and chaotic sequences and there is no artifacts, banding or any problematic situations in the picture quality at all.

Overall, "On Stranger Tides" is a fantastic looking film and looks absolutely wonderful on Blu-ray!

AUDIO & SUBTITLES:

What best than to present this film with a lossless English, French and Spanish 7.1 DTS-HD HR presentation. The surround channels are heavily used in Hans Zimmer's wonderful score to the swordfights, the sound of boots walking on the deck, the sound of blasts, the growl of the mermaids and scenery ambiance, and throughout all this immersive sound, dialogue is crystal clear and understandable.

The LFE for the film is wonderful and like the wonderful picture quality of the film, the lossless audio soundtrack is also fantastic!

Subtitles are presented in English SDH, French and Spanish.

JUDGMENT CALL:

When it comes to popcorn action films "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" manages to incorporate the fun, swashbuckling action of Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp does a wonderful job of playing Jack Sparrow. But one's enjoyment is subjective, especially whether or not you have felt that your passion for the film series is starting to wane a bit.

After the third "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, I have to say that "At World's End" left me feeling bitter because it was not a great film to end the trilogy. But because these films make a tremendous amount of money, there is no way that we are going to see an end to this film series. In fact, a fifth film is being planned and Johnny Depp is returning, so as long as the audience continues to come out to see the films, I don't see why Disney should stop. People still love "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Personally, I enjoyed the film but unlike previous "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, it felt a bit light when it came to Jack Sparrow because there is so much emphasis on other characters. In fact, I found myself enjoying scenes with the Christian Philip (played by Sam Claflin)and the mermaid Syrena (played by Astrid Berges-Frisbey), which for me was the replacement characters for Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley's characters for the previous films). But unfortunately, where Turner and Swann had staying power for three films, not sure if we are going to see Philip or Syrena ever again.

While "On Stranger Tides" continues to be a fun, adventurous popcorn action film, I did enjoy seeing Penelope Cruz playing the character of Angelica Teach, a compassionate/cutthroat ex-lover of Jack Sparrow and Ian McShane as the legendary dark pirate Blackbeard was quite fun to watch as well. And seeing Barbosa, it was no surprise to see his return to the film as well.

But "On Stranger Tides" tries to showcase many other characters as well and truth be told, aside from Gibbs who has a place in the PotC films, everyone else didn't. For example, in the first film, there was a sympathetic feeling towards Sparrow and his crew, but this time around, you really had no sympathy for anyone's crew. If anything, you just wondered when will Jack Sparrow be back on his ship instead of being Indiana Jones/Blackbeard's grunt. This is one side of Jack Sparrow that we have not seen in previous films and I'm not sure if I like him in such a non-commanding role.

But however one feels about "On Stranger Tides", similar to films like "Transformers", these are popcorn action films that people come to see and have a good time, not for anything deep or mind-blowing. You get action and a ton of special effects and in that sense, "On Stranger Tides" does not disappoint.

But when it comes to this Blu-ray release, one thing that does disappoint is the fact that we are getting far less than the five disc version when it comes to special features. Picture and lossless audio is fantastic but I was surprised to see only three special features including the audio commentary included with this release. But it appears that Disney really is pushing for the 3D 5-disc version which has nine special features over its 2-disc counterpart which has only three minus the second screen.

Overall, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is a fun film and from the crew fight on the Queen Anne's Revenge, Jack Sparrow's escape from British custody to the encounter with the mermaids, there are many fun action scenes in this film. But in terms of story, I still prefer the first original film, but there is no doubt that the visuals and overall production design is much improved in this latest film.

If you are a fan of the series and own the trilogy on Blu-ray, or you are just a big fan of the film or its talent, you're definitely going to want this film in your collection. But if you are wanting the best version of this film released on Blu-ray, you may want to look into the 5-disc version over this 2-disc combo pack as Disney chose to include most of the bonus features on the 5-disc release.

Let me start this review by saying the 3 Stars is not for the movie itself, or necessarily the package, because I am sure it will be great. I myself, maybe I might be overrating it, but I loved this movie. I thought it was much closer to the fun and surprise of the first movie, and not the bad dialogue and pacing issues of the second and third. Depp was great as usual, the new villain was awesome, and the movie was so much fun! It wasn't flawless, but it was really good.

Now as for this package, I would be more than happy to buy it. However, Disney really did a good job of ripping off the buyers who don't have a 3D TV.

This is not the only edition of the movie on Blu-Ray, but this is the best one to buy. The five disc set consists of The 3D Blu Ray disc of the movie, a standard Blu Ray edition, a special features disc on a REGULAR blu-ray, a DVD copy, and a Digital Copy of the film. So what's the problem? Well me myself, I do not own a 3D player, but I love special features on Blu-Ray discs and for DVD's, so I like to buy the edition where I can have all of my special features.

However, what Disney did with this release is they put the standard Blu-Ray disc with all of the special features ONLY IN THIS RELEASE! In the other Blu Ray release of this film, it only includes the movie on Blu-Ray and the Movie on DVD. No special Features Disc to be found, but it is in this version.

This is really scummy by Disney because not only do standard people who don't want a copy of it in 3D get ripped off of special features, but also us who like our features will have to dig out some more money to pay for it. This edition is about 5-10 dollars more expensive than the standard Blu Ray and not only because of the extra disc, but because of the 3D!

It really makes me annoyed because I love special features, and I thought this movie was really good! But I am going to have a tough decision to make whether to buy this edition or not. I don't know, what do you guys think? Me myself? I might not even end up buying the movie because of this. Darn shame, I was looking forward to getting it.

If your an Asian male you're probably going to laugh your butt off. If you like American pie it's probably just as funny if you get Asian humor and on top of it all there are beautiful mostly naked Chinese girls sprinkled all through it. I got the blu-ray version just because but it was well worth it. Being part Chinese I could definitely appreciate the cultural aspect of this and of course since this thing was filmed close to China it was very controversial to the Chinese government. However, I would recommend enjoying the coming of age story and learning a little about new cultures.
