Review of International House (1933)

International House

I've always liked movies where lots of unassociated stuff happens. Movies like this, which are little more than showcases for popular acts of the time they were made, are among my favorites. ("Stormy Weather" is another good example.)

You won't find a better example of this than "International House." The plot, such as it is, involves a Chinese guy who has invented something called a "radio scope" which, even though they didn't know it at the time, basically predicted the concept of satellite television. All kinds of bidders are flying to China from all over the world to bid on the contraption, including an Eastern Eurpopean Millionaire (Bela Lugosi, in one of his few non-horror roles; he's actually pretty good here), an American Ingenue with a capital "I" (Peggy Hopkins Joyce, who apparently really WAS an American ingenue) and other sorts. Tossed into the mix is of course WC Fields, who manages to land a bizarre flying contraption in the lobby of the hotel (you need to see this at least once before you die. It's pretty funny)!

The acts on TV (and in the hotel, in the case of Burns and Allen) are really what the movie is all about. Cab Calloway's "Reefer Man" is a stand out, as is Rose Marie, all of about eight years old at the time singing a song that Sophie Tucker might have sung, given the chance.

Fields is simply excellent here, as is his perennial movie nemesis, Franklin Pangborn (as the head clerk at the hotel desk--but why is this guy running a hotel in CHINA?)

This is definitely a film you can watch many times, either all the way through or just for the parts you like best. Recommended!

Perhaps one of the most surreal and special experiences in Hollywood filmmaking. The musical numbers are a hoot -especially the chorus made up of dancers dressed in art deco celophane outfits and Cab Calloway's manic rendition of "Reefer Man" (not to mention a pre-adolescent and disturbingly sexy Baby Rose Marie performing a hot torch number). The jokes are a treat -you'll find yourself saying, "I can't believe they got away with this!" when you hear some of the lines from WC Fields as well as Burns and Allen (it was pre-code, by the way).

In the end, you're amazed at the strange, dream-like quality of the film. Something akin to Busby Berkley meets a Dali painting.

With regard to the review of Nov 19 2001, it sounds like the reviewer obtained an incomplete copy of the film. My VHS has the scenes he states were deleted on his copy, and the video quality is great on mine! I wonder if he obtained a 'third party' video?

I've loved this film since I was a child and know almost all the lines by heart. It is still fun to watch every so often just to see everyone ham it up!

W.C. Fields was masterful in his role, having been done before alcohol took its toll on him. Peggy Hopkins Joyce, who was so well-known then and so little-known now, fills her role (and her gowns) with professional ease. Burns and Allen are a pleasure, as always, as the doctor and nurse at the hotel. This is a rare opportunity to see Bela Lugosi in a comedy part, and it makes me regret once more that he was so typecast as Dracula. Franklin Pangborn camps it up as usual as the hotel manager. Yes, there is a dated cultural ethnocentricity as one would expect with a film from this era, but nothing really offensive.

Not a bad moment in this film. If you receive a cassette with the scenes missing as reviewed below, return it. Get the whole movie, it's worth it!

Honest reviews on International House (1933)

If you aren't the kind of person that likes comedy, then this film is not for you. You have to have a pulse and a funny bone to view this crazy side splitting 1933 comedy. I had never knew W.C Fields was so down to earth with his jokes. When Rudy Valee was singing a rather bizarre ballad, W.C. Fields made a rude remark about his singing. There's another scene in the movie where W.C. Fields drove his car down the outside stairs of the hotel. As crazy as it may seem, it was really funny. (Yoohoo!) This is the word you'll hear when Mr. Fields asks from his helicoptor "What city is this?" (PRICELESS!)

One of the cinema's unheralded treasures, "International House" (1933) is a refreshingly bizarre musical-comedy that could only be made during the Depression era. Untouched by the Hays Office, the laughs come at a good clip with a once-in-a-lifetime cast: W.C. Fields, Burns and Allen, Stu Erwin, Bela Lugosi, Franklin Pangborn, Cab Calloway, Baby Rose Marie, and other names too numerous to mention. As Professor Quail, Fields does not make his grand entrance until the halfway mark, but dominates the proceedings with a nonstop stream of one-liners and alcoholic intake. A must-see!

Seriously, folks. If it wasn't incredibly obvious from the previews this is another PG-13 Die Hard with a different protagonist. It's got all the hilarious quotable quips, loud explosions, elevator climbing, crashing, bullet-flying, popcorn action you'd expect. It's smartly written, well-acted, and entertaining from beginning to end. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is it silly? Very. It's absolutely what you want and expect from a Die Hard movie. It's also the most likable Channing Tatum and and Jamie Foxx have ever been in my opinion (yes, I actually sat through Step Up, She's the Man, Ray, and Stealth, slightly more traumatized with each new film).

If you are expecting Independence Day or Stargate levels of over-the-top sci-fi battle-royale-with-cheese you will be disappointed. If you just want a rollicking good time with a Die Hard flick set in the White House you're probably going to love this movie. It doesn't have a SINGLE annoying character and I actually laughed at the jokes. The performances by the superb cast are uniformly excellent. The sound, effects, camera-work, and overall direction of the film do not disappoint. Highly recommended to action fans who like things on the over-the-top entertaining side you can crunch popcorn to and wash down with a Slurpee.

"I can't think of a more important job then protecting the President." John Cale (Tatum) is a policeman working in Washington D.C. Trying to reconnect with his young daughter he brings her with him to the White House for his interview with the Secret Service. While there they meet the President (Foxx) and she is having the best day. When a group attacks the White House and goes after the President the only person who is able to help is Cale. Now he has to try and protect both the President and get his daughter out safely. I was pretty excited about seeing this. I am a big Jamie Foxx fan, but I was leery of Tatum (not a fan). I will admit that the chemistry between them was very good and the movie had some very funny parts in this as well as wall to wall action. This is the latest movie in Hollywood's "I can do it better" series. Other movies in this club are Deep Impact & Armageddon, Illusionist & Prestige, movies with the same idea coming out close to each other. While Olympus Has Fallen was OK and worth seeing this one was way better and if you had to choose between the two this is the way to go. There really isn't a dull moment in this and I highly recommend it. Overall, not an Oscar type movie and a little predictable but a movie that is very exciting and fun. I really liked it. I give it an A-.

I went to see this movie with my husband and was pleasantly surprised. Although I like both of these actors, action films with political themes do not usually hold my interest...however, this film kept moving, kept twisting and turning...held my interest to the end. I know that some of the situations were a little far fetched, but who cares? I wanted to see something that would take my mind off of everyday situations and this film did just that! It had comedy, suspense, and action...I sooooo enjoyed this movie and will buy it on the release date.

Honest reviews on White House Down (Two Disc Combo: Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet

I had the opportunity to see this movie as a screener tonight and I was hesitant about going... I had tickets for both World War Z and White House Down this week but, I knew I could only go to one so I played the odds and managed to get in on the showing.

Let me say that this is a Hollywood propaganda piece for sure and yes it mostly tries to paint the Right Wing as a war machine run by Radicals who sleep with their guns. Honestly, I'm neither a Republican nor a Democrat and I have yet to actually cast my vote for a man whose won the white house (yes I seem to have bet on guys that didn't win) but, I go to movies for an escape from reality and Hollyweird needs to get away from the political BS.

Okay, with all that out of the way, John Cale (Played by Channing Tatum) is a man on security detail for the Speaker of the House and he's trying to get back into his daughter's life while interviewing for a job in the Secret Service. One thing leads to another and he doesn't get the job but, ends up taking his daughter on a tour of the white house. Well, an extremist group sets into motion a distraction at the capital building that has everybody looking that way while the head of security at the WhiteHouse sets a plan in motion to eliminate the Anti-War President (played by Jamie Foxx and there's more to it than that but, you can find that out by seeing the movie). Well, somehow John Cale ends up the being the only man that stands between the extremists and the president and he gets to do an on the Job interview that is as enjoyable, sometimes hilarious, and action packed as any movie in recent years.

Let me just say, this really is Die Hard for the new generation, it is a throw back to when movies were movies and they did an excellent job with the story and production in spite of the political skewing. I honestly feel there's only one other movie I enjoyed this much in 2013 and that was Star Trek Into Darkness so, it really shows you how highly I think of this movie as the Star Trek was easily my favorite movie of the year.

Overall, I would give it 5 stars but, I had to take it down a peg for ruining my entertainment with politics. So, if you love the original Die Hard, you're going to love this movie as they really do not make them like this anymore (or at least not very often)!

While I have to say, this film was entertaining, because of the high octaine action, and (for the most part) a really good cast. Now onto the story, this has to be one of the most overused plots ever, and some of the characters are horribly written, and there is a couple of scenes in the movie that'll make you laugh out load, especially one scene that's near the end, has to do with Chaning's characters daughter, so freaking funny, especially when this thing is mentioned in earlier in the movie. And there are many more, if you are coming in to see an emotionally engaging story, go somewhere else. If want to laugh at crazy action, stereotypes, oneliners, and hysterical moments, you'll have a great time.

As studio execs continue to milk the cash cow that is the CG animated feature, MONSTER HOUSE is refreshing on two fronts; firstly, we see a departure from cutesy animals/toys in peril, and secondly, it's good!

I would imagine that fellow kids-at-heart who grew up in the eighties with INDIANA JONES and THE GOONIES will feel right at home with D.J., Chowder, and Penny; all characters we've met and identified with before in other movies. The focus is on story and character interaction, and thankfully there's a complete lack of "Gee! Look what we can do with computer graphics!" We're not subjected to nauseating shaky-cam and rapid cuts of other recent kid flicks this movie looks beautiful, and the animators allow you to appreciate it. Not surprisingly, the most interesting characters are Nebbercracker and The House. There's a good story here, ultimately with unexpected warmth and heart.

Is it aimed at the right age group? That's debatable. More sensitive kids may find it too scary. It's loud at times, there's a few in-your-face frights, and the tension builds quickly. Beyond the genre setting, there are a number of more mature themes present which parents should be aware of, notably alcohol usage and sexual themes when the babysitter and her boyfriend are on-screen. I could knock off a star for these points given the target audience, but they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the movie.

I highly recommend MONSTER HOUSE to animation lovers, big kids at heart, and little kids with a big kid to hide behind.

I just saw this film today (after missing out on a sold out sneak preview last weekend) and the increased level of expectation was met with one of the most rewarding moviegoing experiences I've had in the last five years. Monster House gives us one doozy of a spooky antagonist, a decrepit domicile of living malice that gobbles errant toys and passerby with equal ingenuity and viciousness.

The house is plain old MEAN, and for really small children perhaps a little too scary to take in a gigantic room filled with strangers and darkness. But for those of us who are too grown up for a nighlight this is perfect, creepy entertainment.

The same motion capture technology used to create The Polar Express (a film which I have still yet to see) is a very interesting and appropriate choice for this film, where the only truly fantastic element is the demented house that will not suffer trespassers. It works so well because the eerie realism that depicts the characters is so starkly contrasted with the insanity that ultimately drives the Monster House to be, well, so monstrous.

Now I fully expected to be entertained by the antics of the house, but I didn't expect there to be much of a story. Again I was pleasantly surprised by what I think is a script that I believe is just as worthy of an Oscar nomination as the script for The Incredibles was. There is, beneath the floorboards of this film, more heart than horror. A tale of love, retribution, acceptance, forgiveness, and ultimately letting go.

Monster House is, beyond a doubt, one of the coolest Horror movies for kids ever made. A Halloween tradition in the making that dares to answer that age old question: Can a house be haunted?

The answer is a resounding yes with a disquieting post script.

Whatever is haunted may also be hungry!

Watched Monster House in 3d last night with my 12 year old. It was fantastic, the 3d was great, next to no ghosting and i was paying attention to the detail of the movie. Lots of laughs and fun. The quality was alot better than Monsters vs Aliens and cloudy with a chance of meatballs, which i noticed much more ghosting around images. Buy it and enjoy, the last 15 minutes i kept saying wow.

Honest reviews on Monster House (2006)

Monster House uses the same motion-capture technology as Zemeckis' Polar Express but takes it to the next level. This time around, the whole context of the movie will appeal to a wider audience so this is a great opportunity to display the possibilities that this all digital technology offers.

Beyond the technical achievement, Monsterhouse is an excellent surprise for its family-oriented audience. Unlike Dreamworks and their Shrek-ish, below-the-belt, cynically adult-oriented features, this movie aims at both the kids and grown-ups in a way that tends to unite them around its subject, rather than addressing the two categories separately and alternatively.

To kids, this will be their first experience of an actual horror flick: the house IS seriously haunted and this is definitly no Casper-like curse. Lives are at stake here and the line between good and evil is not so strictly defined.

Some aspects of the plot have a very macabre touch, still a bittersweet feeling comes in balance towards the end.

A real implication is required from the kids, especially because a few thrills awaits them once the house has awaken.

On the parents' side, besides the fact that for those like me who grew up with the Amblin productions of the eighties (The Goonies, The Gremlins and co), you are in for a great back-to-the-future nostalgic trip. Not only because the action takes place in the 80's (various hints lead to believe it)but because the whole atmosphere, the characters, the humour will either make you wish you could still be 5 to 10 years old to fully dive into this nightmarish story, or simply will make you forget you've grown older and make you actually feel like you're a kid again.

So thank you Mr Zemeckis and Mr Spielberg for producing this little gem, which, though it draws its inspiration from a classic tradition of haunted mansion archetypes, never fails to find its own identity and energy.

In a nutshell: great style and screenplay, technically impressive and very concerned about offering a satisfying show to the audience.

Sounds a bit overblown, but hear's the breakdown;

-So many reviews tout this as "for kids" and "adults can tolerate it" and "Childish humor".

-Based on these reviews, I took my family to the theater to see "Monster House".

-Much of the story and humor went flying over my kids heads.

-When one of the characters graffically FRENCH KISSES a stuffed bunny rabbit toy, my wife and I were mortified. You see, we have a 4 and 8 year old who were not scared of the movie. But, at this point, my wife and I were.

-Said FRENCH KISSER also guzzles a BEER and GROPES the baby sitter in a DRUNKEN stupor.

-PUBERTY is a prominent theme of the story. Nothing wrong with that, but hardly a subject for young kids movies.

Why the "sexual" aspects of the film are even there, I don't know. They contributed little (or Nothing) to the plot. If taken out, the story becomes no less complete or understandable.

Now, I'm sure all of this sure sounds like freeked-out "Moral Policing". However, what it actually is, is concerned parrenting. Had I been given those little details mentioned above, I may have passed on taking my kids to this film. So I write this review to fill that void which other reviewer failed to do.

Personally, I thought this was such a great film on so many levels. Excellent character development, interesting story, very cool animation. I think some of the negative reviewers here completely don't get this film.

My kids left the film happy and satisfied. They were scared at parts (they're supposed to be) but thoroughly enjoyed it. They actually slept like babies through the night (which rarely happens when we don't see a "scary" movie).

But, to say it is targeted towards kids is not 100% true.

Hope this helps other parents out there.

UPDATE

I received the DVD as a Christmas gift and watched it with my kids (the first part of this review is from the thaeatrical release). I strategically skipped the scene with the boy friend french kissing the toy and groping the babysitter. No one noticed. this reinforced my point that it was useless character development time and contributed nothing to the story. After a second viewing I'd still say this is a really good movie. My 4 year old does not like it though. Too scary. He goes and plays in his room.

Extras are good. Nice to see the voice actors and how the film was executed. Just remember, when the boyfriend picks up the stuffed bunny, hit the "skip forward" button. Then your kids can watch a good, scary movie without sexual content.

Update #2:

My 4 year old is now 5. This is his favorite Halloween movie now. When we go on long trips, this is his DVD of choice to watch in the car. I Still don't like Bones though.

There was nothing "wrong" with this movie, but I get the impression most of the people who are giving it 5 stars and saying it was "edge of your seat suspense" and "chilling" are younger viewers.

Anybody over age 30 has probably seen this same story at least half a dozen times by now.

I would have probably given it another star if I had not heard so much praise for the film beforehand.

But the movie did not live up to the hype.

It was pretty much a "by the numbers" horror film that borrows very, very, very heavily from the Grand-daddy of horror films that started this whole Genre -- PSYCHO

No real twists, pretty much what you expect and are waiting for from beginning to end.

So certainly not bad, but not the "masterpiece of suspense that will keep you from sleeping" that so many proclaimed it to be.

It seems like only yesterday that Jennifer Lawrence made her big screen debut in Winters Bone, a small scale but critically acclaimed movie which gained her an Oscar nomination.

Since then she has gone from strength to strength starring in two of the biggest box office successes we have seen in the last two years X Men First Class and Hunger Games. I think it's fair to say that her rise has been meteoric.

As I watched the movie and the camera's love affair with her, the thought went through my mind several times of what an exquisite looking creature she truly is, still young enough to play a teenager.

A grisly murder of two parents takes place in a remote house in a leafy suburb of an upscale neighborhood of a typical rural town. The daughter who killed them was never found thus stoking local legend that she is still running around loose.

Years later a mother played by Elisabeth Shue and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer) move to said town they end up in a house nearby from which the slightly rundown, seemingly abandoned and spooky murder house is visible. Cue the scary music when Jennifer looks through the trees and sees the house light unexpectedly come on. Wooh.

As Elissa adjusts to school life her curiosity ensures familiarity with the story, and then one night walking in the rain a car stops to offer her a ride home, and the driver is the current occupant of the scary house the only surviving member of the family. Does she get in the car or keep walking?

Elissa and her mother have one of those fractious relationships and her mother forbids her from having anything to do with the occupant of the house but Elissa is attracted to him and teens will be teens. While she likes this misunderstood boy the town as a whole is understandably suspicious of a boy who would choose to live in the house where his parents were killed. Creepy, right?

Not all the horror of the past has been resolved and although Elissa is on the alert things can happen so you can become scared or horrified. What I liked was that this movie did manage to surprise me. This movie may scare you at times and I liked its unusual twists particularly about the daughter.

I found the movie entertaining and definitely elevated by the star power of Jennifer Lawrence. I think most people will love it and I hope this was helpful

The synopsis sounded interesting. Thus, I rented it. This film was a big disappointment. They should have saved their time, effort and money on this one. That is just my opinion. This film was not as suprising, interesting or scary in any way, except that it could happen in any town at any time. This is not the first time I saw a film with the same premise. A film entitled SleepAway Camp, something like that. In that one, the parents did the same thing as in this one. I don't want to give anything away. The acting performances are believeable, but the film is basically a dud. We had it figured out in the first ten minutes of this film and then just watched it to see if what we guessed was right and we were.

Overall, I can't recommend it, but that is your choice.

I don't know what some of these people are talking about. There was nothing predictable about this movie. I am a huge thriller/horror fan. I've seen everything and lately there hasn't been anything good coming into the theater's. Typically you watch five minutes of a movie and you know how it will end. I thought it would be the same with this movie. IT ISN'T! It's awesome! Jennifer Lawrence does a GREAT job!!! Loved this movie...in the theater....and can't wait to go and see it again. It is a definite "must see" if you are a horror movie fan!!!

I saw this movie a few months ago and all i remember is how extraordinarily bored i was the entire movie. I don't remember what happened, i don't remember the ending ,it was absolutely boring. As a fan of horror movies this was dreadful. I believe the director thought he was being unique and interesting but he was wrong. When i saw the trailer i got excited because i thought it was going to be more paranormal and scary. It turned out to be more of a "kidnapping"/ thriller movie. I use thriller lightly because nothing about the movie kept me at the edge of my seat. If you want to see a good thriller movie with popular young stars than watch Disturbia. I love Jennifer Lawrence but this movie was rubbish and you will forget all about it in a week. If you are truly bored with your life it just might be worth one watch but other than that don't waste your time. I love scary movies and thrillers this was disappointing.

Horror films in the 1950s were often set in earlier times including "House of Wax" a gothic-styled thriller. Vincent Price stars, and this movie was his first of many, many horror films. He's perfect in this role, and it's puzzling why no one had cast him as this type of character before. He plays Prof. Henry Jarrod, a wax figure sculptor who's far too obsessed with his work. He's the head of an unsuccessful wax museum and watches in disgust as other museums make money by showing horror style wax figures, such as mass murderers. When his museum is burned to the ground, he re-emerges and seeks vengeance on persons responsible.

The film received a great deal of buzz as the second 3-D film released by a major studio ("Bwana Devil" was the first); not surprisingly, it was a major hit, becoming the 7th biggest money-maker of 1953. "House of Wax" was actually a remake of a 1933 film, "Mystery of the Wax Museum." In addition, a remake of this film is currently in the works, and should be released in 2005. One of the stars of the upcoming film is Paris Hilton, which should be interesting!

Although I prefer Castle's horror films from this period, Price alone makes this film worthwhile. Carolyn Jones ("Addams Family") is also fun as a kind harlot. Overall, the movie holds up pretty well, mostly because of its creepy tone. I saw the movie in 2-D but still enjoyed it quite a bit.

This is a movie I wanted to see in 3D all my life and Warner Home Video really delivered the goods with this Blu-ray 3D release.

The picture is sharp and detailed, the Warnercolor is beautiful, and the 3D effects are outstanding. The surround stereo is thrilling to hear, and really enhances the entire experience.

This is a much better presentation than Warner's "Dial M for Murder," which was released on 3D Blu-ray last year. Although I enjoyed watching that one, it suffered with heavy ghosting issues at times on my 3D Epson LCD projector. Such is not the case with "House of Wax," which is absolutely spectacular, one of those movies you're gonna want to show family and friends when they stop by.

If you were on the fence about buying this one, it's time to hop down and pay the piper. Congratulations to Warner Bros. for doing an outstanding restoration job on this classic, important piece of cinema history.

This movie has wit, excellent pacing and a strong supporting cast (including a blonde Carolyn Jones "Morticia" from the Addams Family) and a small role for Charles Bronson (playing Igor and billed as Charles Buchinsky). Prince gets to be both understated and hammy in the brilliant film, that he is likely best know for.

It catches the atmosphere of the Gaslight period, and is lighting speed, as Price goes from a brilliant artist of life-like wax figures, to a scarred man, nearly killed by his partner wanting the insurance. He is forced to watch his two crowning glories, his Joan of Arc and his Marie Antoinette destroyed in the fire. With scared hands, he is forced to use bodies to fill his new house of wax, while Price also manages to meet out a little revenge to his former partner.

At first bodies are vanishing from the morgue, but when Price sees Jones the living image of Joan of Arc and Phyllis Kirk, his Marie Antoinette come to life in his mind he knows he must possess the bodies of both women to see if greatest works recreated.

Is so spooky, and Kirk ably screams her way from one mishap to the next. Just does not get any better.

Honest reviews on House of Wax (2013)

I was a teenager when I saw this movie in 3D (this was my 1st 3D movie). It was re-released in the early '70's and I fell in love with anything 3D. I would sit there flipping the glasses up & down amazed that these 2 images could make such a great looking 3D image. Warner Brothers did an "EXCELLENT" job with this transfer. This is how I remembered it. I will not report on the story as every review re-tells it. I want to report on the technical aspects of this movie.

Some are complaining about ghosting (also with Dial M For Murder) but I found that if you tilt the TV screen downwards the ghosting would disappear. If your TV does not tilt, stand up & you will see the difference. Some are complaining about it being grainy. This is probably the scene where Vincent Price is running after Phyllis Kirk in the fog. Yes it looks grainy because the Blu-Ray is so sharp you will see the graininess.

I am buying many 3D movies but none compare with these movies from the '50's. I also have "The Creature From The Black Lagoon", another great 3D movie. Still waiting for "It Came from Outer Space". I just hope that ALL the studios decide to put out their great backlog of '50's 3D movies. The new movies just don't compare. They look fake.

Again this movie is flawless. If you were waiting for a good reason to buy a 3D TV, this is it! This movie will do it for you.

My only wish was that they put it out with the 5.1 surround soundtrack. It is only DTS 2.0. Please note that this does NOT detract from the fabulous transfer.

Movie Studios, PLEASE release your backlogs (even the cartoons from that era, Bugs, Popeye etc.). Disney did a great job with "Working For Peanuts". There are MANY 3D buffs who can't wait for further releases.

Does not get better than this!!!!

First of all I have to compliment Warner on their magnificent 3D work getting the same effects that if you were lucky enough to see back in the 50's at the theater. I was blown away especially by the guy playing paddle ball at the House of Wax. Of course Vincent Price was 5 star and the color was terrific on the restoration. I also enjoyed the bonus feature "Mystery of the Wax Museum". All in all it's worth the money. By the way, whoever stated that there were no subtitles is totally wrong!! Subtitles are shown not only in "House of Wax" but also in the "Mystery of the Wax Museum". For those of you who don't have 3D, Warner also included a 2D with the restoration but you really have to see this in 3D to appreciate the artistry of the director.

When the title of a movie is Safe House, one can assume that this CIA safe house in South Africa is any but safe for its intended guest, Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) a rogue CIA agent. Daniel Espinosa keeps the movie moving at a good clip with smart cinematography. Denzel Washington is believable and classy. Ryan Reynolds provides a good supporting role as a CIA safe house keeper. Overall, one of the best thriller action movies in the past year.

If you are interested in other great CIA movies, please check out Body of Lies(Leonardo Dicaprio), The Recruit(Al Pacino with Colin Farrell), and Spy Game(Robert Redford with Brad Pitt).

The action/drama/mystery film opens with a quick character build up of the multifaceted CIA agent Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). He operates a safe house with nobody in it. He wants a European field assignment, but lacks department seniority.

The movie switches to Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) obtaining an embarrassing electronic file from the MI6 in South Africa. "Frost", because he is cold. Denzel uses his expected savvy to escape. He is a rogue super agent who free lances, buying and selling information. In order to escape the bad guys, Tobin surrenders to the CIA. Now the questions are: Was this his original plan? What is on the file?

Tobin is taken to our aforesaid safe house for intense interrogation.

I loved the opening of the interrogation scene. The interrogator says, "I'm here to advise you of your rights. You're being held under national security order 600 which means you have none."

Frost is too important of a person and the top secret safe house comes under attack. The young low level highly trained Matt Weston is now on the run with a man who is a master manipulator of people. To our list of unanswered questions we now add, "Who is the mole?"

Ryan and Washington give us excellent performances. It had elements of the Bourne series that made this story interesting, but it doesn't quite measure up to that film. Cliche ending. I would say if you are a fan of the trilogy, check this one out.

Multiple chase scenes, torture, killings, shoot outs, minor "roof top" jumping, car wreaks without explosions.

1 f-Bomb, no sex, no nudity. Rated R for violence.

Honest reviews on Safe House (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) (2012)

The acting was well done. Denzel is as good as always. Ryan Reynolds did a fabulous job. The two characters actually worked well together. The action was better than most films. For once in a film someone fired a shot in public and the police showed up also. The plot was not as tight as it could have been; but it worked. Not much of a thriller. This really was an all around good film and worth the price. I will recommend it.

I thought it was good even if most professional reviewers hated it. Very exciting movie. I left the theatre saying it was better than the Bourne movies. The script is pretty tight and the acting is good.

House of Frankenstein (1944) Reviews

House of Frankenstein

The Universal Frankenstein saga continues with Boris Karloff returning to the series that he helped start. This time, however, Boris stays out of the monster suit and plays the mad doctor. The movie effectively blends a Dracula segment with a Frankenstein story and keeps the Wolfman and the hunchback around for good measure. John Carradine is smooth as silk as Dracula. His performance isn't as mysterious as Bela Lugosi's or as menacing as Christopher Lee's, but he does well in a costarring role. Glenn Strange plays the Frankenstein monster for the first time. Lon Chaney, Jr is back again as Larry "The Wolfman" Talbot. Being frozen in ice for a year (since "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman") hasn't chilled his discontent. He still anguishes over his beastly supernatural tendencies, but he manages to display some very human yearnings for the gypsy-dancing girl, Ilonka (Elena Verdugo). The "man-into-werewolf" transformation under the mesmerizing influence of the full moon is still the stuff of childhood nightmares. J. Carroll Naish as the resident hunchback adds pathos to a minor role. Boris Karloff is dignified and quietly insane as Dr. Niemann. His unholy zeal to find Dr. Frankenstein's records and continue his diabolical work in brain transplants is the catalyst that advances the story. The dark humor and the intelligent nuances of the early James Whale entries in this series are replaced in this film by a fast-paced, horror-comics level story. Only the Universal "monster factory" could pull these wildly diverse elements together and bring everything to the inevitable conclusion in one hour and eleven minutes. In the realm of classic horror films, this is a second string entry. Regardless, it's an entertaining flick for those who need the occasional "monster movie" jolt. Suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride. ;-)

After teaming up Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman in 1942 had improved box-office successes for Universal's horror series, this film went one better and introduced John Carradine's Dracula into the mix. Quite why Bela Lugosi, the greatest of all vampires, was replaced by the over-melodramatic Carradine isn't clear, but this film, for all it's titanic glory, lacks something. It has a lot to recommend it though veterans Lionel Attwill, Lon Chaney Jr, J Carroll Naish even Boris Karloff returned to the series, playing the unpleasant Dr Neimann. But best of all is Glenn Strange as the eponymous Monster. Strange played the role in three major films (including 'Abbott and Costello Meet...') but has never got the recognition he deserved. Admittedly, his Monster is given little to do, but he is singularly terrifying and sympathetic in every scene he's in. Of the four actors to play the Monster in this series, he is second only to Karloff. Naish is effective as the sorrowful hunchback hopelessly besotted to a singularly stupid and cruel gypsy girl, and Chaney is his usual bovine self, tortured with having to share his life with his hairy alter-ego. Interestingly, he is killed at the end of this film, but is it really the end for him? Don't be too sure.

This 1944 follow-up to "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" lacks the moody atmosphere of its predecessor. "House of Frankenstein" wastes the Universal gallery of monsters in a terribly contrived story. Though Boris Karloff returns to the fold as Dr. Niemann, the actor wishes he were in another film preferably a Val Lewton production. Director Erle C. Kenton would do a better job with the immediate sequel, "House of Dracula" (1945).

Honest reviews on House of Frankenstein (1944)

1944's "House of Frankenstein" was one of a string of short horror films seeking to capitalize on the existing stable of classic Universal Pictures monsters. In this entry, Boris Karloff gets to play a demented mad scientist named Niemann, who escapes from prison and goes in search of the missing research of his idol, Dr. Frankenstein. Along the way, he finds Dracula (played by John Carradine), confined to a coffin by a wooden stake, and liberates him to take revenge on Niemann's enemies.

Niemann, Dracula, and Niemann's hunchbacked assistant arrive at the ruined Castle Frankenstein, where they find not only the late doctor's research notes, but also the Frankenstein and Wolfman monsters, frozen in an icy cavern under the castle. Niemann revives the two monsters and sets about his evil experiments. The suspicious inhabitants of the local village storm the castle, setting up a thrill-packed if campy conclusion.

The pacing of the movie is hectic and the story rather disjointed; the viewer may well suspect that the intent was to pack as many monsters into the film as possible. Fortunately, the movie succeeds in being good creepy fun almost in spite of itself, thanks to Karloff's gleeful turn as mad scientist and Lon Chaney Jr's reprise of his role as agonized man/werewolf.

the first of the "several rolled into one" scenerio, here we have what i consider to be the best one that universal made. i agree that the film is slightly cheap-looking, but that is what makes these old horror films such a delight.

great to see boris karloff again, and even better that he is the lead. he plays the role of the mad scientist with devilish glee. he gives the best performance by far. j. carrol naish ably supports him, as they both travel the country searching for frankenstein's old castle and the remains of his infamous creature.karloff and naish are the dominant characters. at least the film has the good sense to be set in different places where the various monsters are based.

it is true that this comes across as two films put together; the first half dedicated to dracula, then the rest centres around the wolfman and frankenstein's creature.

on the negative side, lon chaney jnr. should have come into the film much earlier. plus his werewolf scenes are too limited. glenn strange merely has a walk-on part, and has practically nothing to do except cause anarchy. john carradine as dracula is rather wooden. yes, he looks the part, but is ultimately unimpressive. the under-rated lionel atwill should have had more screentime.

still, there is plenty going on to keep horror fans happy.

The 3D conversion for this DVD sucks. I got as much 3D effects out of the film without the glasses as I did with them on. I believe I wasted my money. Anyone wishing to buy this, beware. You'll be throwing your money away.

The anaglyphic two-color 3-D is very poor . It hardly shows up on my T.V. screen . Not even worth the disappointment of trying to watch . Don't waste your money !

I really like this film, but it wasn't filmed in 3d, and this conversion isn't worth owning. It is pretty flat, so why have to wear glasses?

Honest reviews on House on Haunted Hill 3D (1959)

Here is the first and maybe only review for "House on Haunted Hill"--the 3-D version. I am not all that crazy about movies being in 3-D, but I wanted to include another release version of "The House on Haunted Hill" to my collection (B/W, Color, RiffTrax commentaries, as well as the 50th Anniversary Edition). Since this classic horror movie was not shot in 3-D, there really are no scenes that jump out at you...The characters are some-what in-depth. I did enjoy watching Vincent Price at the very end operating the skeleton in 3-D! Figured this would be a fun movie to show if you were having a party yourself! Plus, while your guests are watching in this 3-D, think like William Castle and do your 'Emergo' version by releasing a skeleton above your TV to scare them!!!!!!

This is a good scary/suspense/slasher movie, so why should the critics like it? They usually don't anyway. I went into the theater expecting nothing and really liked the movie. Now take into account I have never seen the "original" (by the way this is not a re-make, it only borrows the name) so I had no idea what to expect. Ok, I really went to see it because of Elisha Cuthbert (total babe!) but after a few minutes I found myself into the movie. In this type of movie, it is a good idea to pick things out and remember them, and of coarse I did not. I would give an example, but I do not want to give anything away here. But I had to ask on a message board at imdb to find the answer and the movie fooled me. If you have not seen it, what I just wrote will make no sense so skip my last sentence. Anyway, I am not gonna go over what others have already beat to death, no pun intended, like how Paris dies and things like that. If you want to see a scary movie, then see this with NO expectations, and you should not be disappointed. I liked it enough to buy the DVD when it comes out.

At first, I wasn't expecting anything from this movie... I thought "well, here we go again for another stupid slasher with nothing new to offer".

But I was wrong. In fact I found this film to be a terrific new entry into the slasher genre.

The screenplay is very nice. I does not start to kill people right away.. it develops the story... lets you know ter characters... and THEN... just when you are dying to see some killings... it starts.

...And never lets go. The plot is better than you'd expect. Not the usual "six kids get to a wax museum". Instead they get separated in three groups (which opens the space for three almost-independent storylines). This may not look much... but in fact it allows the screenplay to build some plausability and complications. The characters come and go separate ways and the script creates great shock moments exactly at the moment different storylines meet.

And the killings... they are brutal, sadistic... and go beyond the usual "slash-and-you're-dead"... In fact (laughs) nobody dies at first. The screenplay takes the detail up to the limit. All the killings are beautifully constructed.

Without wanting to spoil the fun, I just should say this film goes further on the sadistic things the killers do. Much further than what was acceptable years ago.

I think this film brought new breath to the genre.

Casting is good, makeup is fine. Directing is solid, art direction is discreet enough... I really liked it.

Of course there are better films made 20 or 30 years ago. But this one sits along the best slashers in the last 10 years (if it is not THE best one in 10 years).

But beware! This film is very cruel! Maybe you would like to pass on it if you play the piano, if you love your fingers... or if you like to walk barefooted.

By the way... It has nothing to do with the 1953 Vincent Price version... just the title and what it suggests.

Obviously, this DVD is a great buy. Watch it alone... or with friends... with 2 tons of popcorn. Great!

I hadn't heard great things about HOUSE OF WAX. Knowing Paris Hilton was one of the stars, I assumed that the bad comments I read had to be right. But one afternoon, when I was incredibly bored, I decided to rent HOUSE OF WAX as a way to be entertained for the day. Boy, was I amazed to find that it was one of the most fantastic and creepiest slasher films I had ever seen. True, slasher films are usually terribly made, contain a plot that goes nowhere, and gorgeous actors and actresses. Though HOUSE OF WAX has many qualities of a slasher, it's an exception to the garbage everyone knows and hates.

Six teens (though Carly and her brother Nick are the stars) on their way to a football game find themselves victims to the evil that lies in an abandoned town. The only remaining residents are two murderous brothers--and those that they turn into wax sculptures. Now, Carly and her five friends must do whatever it takes to protect themselves from falling prey and becoming the next victims of the deadly house of wax. Although it doesn't take that long for you to figure out who's going to survive and who's going to die, you'll find yourself gasping with suspense when you see one of the characters drop dead.

While others may disagree with me on this, I thought the acting wasn't that bad. Elisha Cuthbert (Carly) played a great job as the heroine, and when Jared Padalecki (Wade) was in pain, so was I. And while Paris Hilton (Paige) definitely is not going to win an Oscar for this role, or for any role, but her acting wasn't that bad. The only acting problem I have is that Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray (Nick) had WAY too much chemistry on screen. They were supposed to be brother and sister, but at many parts throughout the film, I was getting the impression that they were more than just siblings.

I'm not the type of person who gets scared by horror movies easily, and in the daytime, I thought I wouldn't be frightened at all. But at many, many times, I found myself covered in fear. The gory parts are probably what scared me the most. The make-up person gets major props to pulling off some of the most hideous things I have ever seen. But the make-up person isn't the only one who deserves credit--the entire cast and crew do. HOUSE OF WAX managed to give me an interesting story, scare me, and present great actors. When a horror movie is able to pull off all of the above, you can tell that it's a winner.

Honest reviews on House of Wax (2006)

This new version of "House Of Wax" bears very little resemblance to the original, released over fifty years ago. That right there means certain people are gonna be angry about it. And I'm sure it must pain fans of the original to see this updated version with Paris Hilton as one of the stars. Nevertheless, if you are just looking for a good, fun slasher, with a hard R-rating (believe me, this puppy earned it), you could do much worse. Forget that this is a remake, and you will probably find yourself being pleasantly surprised. And if you still aren't sold, look at it this way: You get to watch Paris Hilton die!

"House Of Wax," which stars Chad Michael Murray (from WB's...well, just the WB I guess) and Elisha Cuthbert (who is way sexier than Hilton, without even trying) tells the familiar story of a group of twenty somethings, on their way to a football game, who pull over for the night to set up camp and get a little R & R. However, an automobile problem, a broken headlight, and some damn stinky squirrels and deer, cause this group to wander into a town that time seems to have forgotten. The town, however, has one interesting feature, and that is the infamous House Of Wax. Not only is everything inside made out of wax (or is it?), the House itself is Of Wax. Of course, things go horribly wrong. Why does it feel like the wax figures can see us? Who was that outside the window? Why does that guy keep flirting and leering at my girlfriend? The movie plays out much like classic slashers such as "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and even more like the 2003 "T.C.M." remake. Not only are both remakes extremely pumped up from the original, but you will notice many parellels between the two, from the bizarre torture scenes, to the creepy towns people, all the bases are covered with this movie. If you are a genre fan, you can't help but enjoy this movie. It does try a few different things and will take you by surprise a few times. Heck, one major surprise is Paris Hilton playing someone with moderate intellect. When someone says "What's that smell?" she doesn't want to find out. When she is being chased by the antagonist, she finds a weapon, and uses it. Not just your average teen slasher/splatter flick. As far as the gore goes, this movie has an abundance of it, but I found the wax much more effective. On a list of worst ways to die, I'd put that at the top! And when will people realize, if you keep picking at it, it won't heal (watch it and find out)? If it's possible to have a fear of wax, this movie may put it in you.

So try not to let the seemingly shallow nature of this movie turn you away. Afterall, it's actually quite good, and it's refreshing, in a world of nuetered "PG-13" "horror" flicks, that a nice, solid "R" comes along and gives us the flanking we so badly needed. It's got it's flaws, and it does take a while for the film to build momentum, but if you want thrills, this one's got it. Just try not to cheer or laugh too much when Paris has her big moment...

frankly, when i heard paris hilton was in this i automatically assumed it would be the biggest heap of cow dung on film seen in 2005, yet i have to admit (even as a Paris anti-fan) this movie was pretty enjoyable. i love good horror movies, especially with good amounts of gore, and this movie's certainly applied for that last department.

of course you already know it's not a masterpiece and not a classic by any means, yet i had a blast watching this on DVD, and for all (Paris-hating) horror nuts like me, you'll like this one. if you like blood, suspense and gory fun, this is definitely worth a viewing.
